The most amazing thing about Meatloaf was his phenomenal diction. No matter how he is singing, no matter how fast the syllables are flying out, you can hear every single word as clearly as if he was speaking it directly to you.

@@setonhillstudios if you've got two and a half extra minutes, look for a song called "Hot Patootie Bless My Soul". Even Richard O'Brien the songwriter said that he can't sing it because there are just too many syllables. But Meatloaf gets them all out with absolute clarity. Plus, it's actually a very fun song.

Meat Loaf was a trained actor. He played in musicals in Broadway theaters, e. g. "More than you deserve", "Hair", "The Rocky Horror Show" where he even played a double role (Eddie and Dr. Everett Scott). In the film "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" he only played Eddie. Other examples of films: "Fight Club", "Focus", "The 51th state", "A Hole in One", "Outer limits", "Masters of Horror", "Crazy in Alabama" and many more. His last role was in the Netflix series "Ghost Wars" (2018). Meat Loaf emphasized in several interviews that he considers himself firstly as an actor, secondly as a singer. He said that he first tried to find the character of a new song (like an actor does with film roles), only then he would get to the musical part.

Love to see the faces of those first timers when they realize what the song is about. LOL Marvin Lee Aday, aka; Meat Loaf, had a theatrical background which he really played up to in his performances. Check him out in the movie "Rocky Horror Picture Show". The lady singer in the video is Carla Devito, but the singing voice is actually Ellen Foley. Ellen was busy on Broadway at the time of the video shoot, plus she wasn't really thrilled to get so intimate with Meat like Carla did. But, on tour it was Carla singing. The baseball analogy was done by sports caster Phil Rizzuto, who at first denied knowing what it was going to be used for. But later admitted he did know, but at the time he had a reputation to uphold. The legendary Jim Steinman wrote this along with all the songs on the album Bat Out of Hell, which you really need to do a deep dive on.

MORE MEAT LOAF!!! One of the three greatest male rock voices of all time, alongside Freddie Mercury and Jimmy Barnes. Literally anything you check out by him is a masterpiece vocally. The entire Bat Out Of Hell album was a continuous story where a guy meets the girl of his dreams and falls in love, pursues her until they're in a relationship which feels great, then she tells him that she wants him and needs him but will never love him so he wanders sadly forward in life and connects with another girl from school who he promises to marry just to get her to sleep with him and it goes very badly because really, she's the rebound. One night after decades of marriage, he's had enough and takes off on his motorbike intending to never come back but crashes it over the edge of a cliff leaving him dying in the bottom of a pit all torn and twisted (BooH song 1). As he's dying, he flashes back on his life (songs 2-6) and realizes that his wife was always there for him and he wasted all the years angry that she wasn't that first true love that he was thinking of, but she loved him and took care of him and encouraged him and for crying out loud, he does love her! But sadly this revelation only comes on the edge of death as he's fading away. Fortunately (or not depending on your perspective), a member of the undead comes upon him and turns him into a vampire. He spends decades wandering the Earth as a soulless vessel until he comes upon somebody who he falls in love with and who loves him back - somebody that he'll never say he's going to love her forever and never leave just to get her into bed - he'd do anything for love, but he's learned his lesson and he won't do that. So ya: listen to this album in order: You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth, Heaven Can Wait, All Revved Up With No Place to Go, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, Paradise by the Dashboard Light, and For Crying Out Loud. Then move on to Peel Out, I'm Gonna Love Her For Both of Us, More Than You Deserve, I'll Kill You If You Don't Come Back, Read 'em and Weep, Dead Ringer For Love (with Cher), Bad Attitude, Modern Girl, Nowhere Fast, Surf's Up, I'd Do Anything for Love (but I Won't Do That), Life is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back, Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through, Out of the Frying Pan (and Into the Fire), Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are, Everything Louder Than Everything Else, Where the Rubber Meets the Road, I'd Lie for You (and That's the Truth), Couldn't Have Said It Better, Did I Say That?, The Monster is Loose, Blind as a Bat, It's All Coming Back to Me Now, Bad for Good, Alive, What About Love?, The Future Ain't What It Used To Be, Peace on Earth, If I Can't Have You, Elvis in Vegas, Going All the Way is Just A Start (A Song in 6 Movements), Loving You's a Dirty Job (but Somebody's Gotta Do It), Souvenirs, and A Time for Heroes. I'd say those are his 10/10 songs. Then you can move onto his 9.5/10 catalogue. Jim Steinman wrote this. He was an impressive songwriter, possibly the greatest lyricist modern music has ever know. His work with Bonnie Tyler (Rebel Without A Clue, Ravishing, Total Eclipse of the Heart, Making Love Out of Nothing At All, I Need A Hero) is worth checking out. His work with Pandora's Box (everything they ever did) is also brilliant.

He says it in the opening line - "Well I remember every little thing, as if it happened only yesterday". - "We're glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife" - "Come on ... hold on tight ... I can see paradise by the dashboard light" He's trapped by his promise & vows, so he's sitting in his car, remembering back "It was long ago & it was far away, & it was so much better than it is today" - he's thinking about suicide (Paradise By The Dashboard Light) He was a professionally trained opera singer, & back in the day, we called this genre Rock Opera.

The announcer for the 'baseball' part was none other than the legendary Phil Rizzuto. Rizzuto was a Hall of Fame Major League baseball player in the 40s and 50s and afterwards spent some 40 years as the radio and TV announcer for the Yankees. He received a Gold Record for his contribution on this song. Jim Steinman was the writer for this album and most of Meatloafs albums, as well as having written hits for several other artists ("Total Eclipse of the Heart" "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" "Its All Coming Back to Me Now".) He also is playing the piano here and on many of the tracks. Steinman and Meat would have falling outs at times but would come back to work together and remained close friends till they both passed within a few months of each other a couple years ago. You find a lot of plot twists and word play in Steinmans writing as well as a lot of operatic/musical theater influences, which worked very well for Meatloaf being the actor/stage performer that he was.

We sat our daughter down when she was about 15 and played this video for her, and instructed her to listen all the way through to be aware of the consequences of making a decision in the “heat” of the moment. This came out just before my 18th birthday. I think it was the first album I purchased with the money I earned from my first job. I had to keep it hidden because the album name was Bat Out of Hell and my parents would have taken it away. I also could play parts of it only when they weren’t home. Two Out of Three got a lot of radio play, and there were several singles released from the album. One of my favorites was Heaven Can Wait even though it was never released as a single. Meatloaf did some minor acting. He was in the movie Rocky Horror Picture Show (cult film from the 70s) as well as Fight Club, Wayne’s World, and others. His video for I’d Do Anything For Love was a very cinematic production. We lost him in 2022.

I was fortunate enough to go to two Meat Loaf concerts in England, the first was the Bat II tour when I was three rows from the front and right in the middle. He was just fantastic and could really put on a show. Miss him (and Jim Steinman) so much.

This intro for you gives you two trails to follow - Meat Loaf's catalog and Jim Steinman's productions. You will find amazing and unexpected hits by following either of these paths. While Meat was a genius in performance and stage presence, Jim Steinman was the genius that wrote, composed, and produced more hits for more artists than you can count....

The entire song was nostalgia from a long time into the marriage. The opening and ending lyrics... "It was long ago, and it was far away, and it was so much better than it is today". This song was actually used in some schools sex-ed classes about the pressures of teenage desire, and how making a decision and promises when you're desperately horny can have LONG-lasting consequences. Amusingly, I've heard that Meatloaf found out the song was being used for teaching when his daughter came home from middle school and told her dad that she had listened to one of his hits in class, for school.
