Mr Lloyd, Metallica's Enter Sandman is utterly CRAP at best; the ONLY Metallica songs that are GREAT are those from albums released way back in the 80's; ie MASTER OF PUPPETS; and AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

1.6 million people, 53 people died, the “security” was the army. The crowd was the horizon. That concert was Monsters of Rock in Moscow, Tushino airfield. 1,6 million people saw Metallica, AC/DC, Black Crowes and Pantera. That was a legendary MoR. The entrance was free. Rod Stewart broke that record with 3.54 million people in Rio de Janeiro on NYE '95

No one died! That is an urban legend. The word casualty is in the civilian word usually just means injuries. In military terminology means both deaths and injuries. There were a few dozen injuries, no deaths! Considering that there were 1.6 million people there, that is extraordinary.

@JW Zero - True words there. 100% agree. I guess it all depends on experience and time. But it also depends on the bands, but definitely most of them have or had some kind of ballads: - Metallica, Helloween, Judas Priest, Iron maiden, Slayer, Megadeth... and also AC/DC, Pretty Maids, Def Leppard, Accept (the one with Udo), Aerosmith, Billy Idol, Alice Cooper, Scorpions, Bon Jovi, Rage Against the Machine, King Diamond, Rammstein, Sabaton, Shakra, U.D.O (classic Udo Dirkschneider solo albums), W.A.S.P, Virgin Steele, Sweet and Lynch, Saxon, Revolution Saints, Stratovarius, Nortic Union, Gotthard, Hallestorm... Or even some long time classics from... Winger or Uriah Heep (yeah, that last stuff is old).

Yeah, they thought that American heavy metal was going to make the crowd riot and bring down social order. Too bad they didn't realize that this was the best thing that ever happened to Russia. The people could now rock freely out in the open with no one busting down their doors and hauling their asses off to the gulag or whatever. The only thing that could make this better was if Metallica had played in the Red Square itself, to really piss off the KGB and the Kremlin. They couldn't, so they played in the Rock Tushino Air Field instead. Unfortunately, nothing like this sort of crowd capacity had ever been seen before and it was so hectic, 53 people died as a result of the rough movement and probably got bodied to death.

There were estimated to be at least 1.6 million at this Monsters of Rock concert at an airfield near Moscow, also featured Pantera, AC/DC and the Black Crowes. But it wasn't the biggest, there have been 3 concerts with over 3 million people Jean-Michel Jarre did it twice and Rod Stewart once (on Copacabana Beach). However, Metallica do hold the record for being the first musical act to perform a concert on every single continent (so that includes Antarctica) and that got them in the Guinness Book of Records.

I've been a Metallica fan since I was an angry 12 year old girl in St. Louis. I really got into thrash metal because I needed a genre of music that could adequately express the seething rage I felt inside, and I glommed onto the talent this band has for creating a sometimes gorgeous orchestral song that also kicks your teeth in. When I need the release of a good thrash metal album, I need songs that make me feel like I've been thrown around in a mosh pit: exhausted, beaten up, but ultimately empowered. Please, for the love of all that is holy, listen to their debut album Kill Em All. 1981 or '82, I believe. That album contains (IMO) the single greatest, hardest, and most brutal songs in all of heavy metal: "Am I Evil?" I think you'll be impressed by their ability to tear your face off with music, much in the same way that Eminem does with hip hop but... medieval.

What you see there is what the song Wind of Change from the Scorpions is actually about. The fall of the iron curtain, the fall of the Berlin wall, the fall of communism, Freedom! "Follow the Moscwa, down to Gorky Park listening to the wind of change......." That was in August 1989 at the Moscow Music Peace festival. Some of the bands were Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osborne, Cinderella and Scorpions. History, huge history, guys. I was 11 years old when the wall fell in November of the same year. And I've never had a problem getting to the front. Just say "excuse me." Maybe add "thank you!" Really, it worked great. Metallica and AC/DC concerts were probably the best and most fun concerts back then.

This is the exact recording of when I first heard Metallica. I was exclusively listening to rap back then, PE, NWA, EPMD, Gunshot, KOOL Moe Dee and so on. A friend brought over this Metallica record and I was blown away. A week later I'd bought a guitar, because I just had to learn how "to do that". Around a decade later, I moved to Moscow for a few years, where I lived and worked. Whilst there I went to visit a.friend in Tushino, not thinking anything of it. He said he had somewhere to show me and took me to that very airfield! Quite a surreal experience and cool at the same time.

I almost did it again yesterday on the steering wheel. As an old man, I have been familiar with Metalica for a long time. That band has old roots. This song you reviewed is a classic now. Metalica has also performed orchestrial type music including a couple Christmas, rock type songs. Although they are not my favorite band, they have some great songs and licks. Thank you for your review. You personally sir have now brought me to open my mind to other music I ordinarily would not listen to, but interested in your review of them. I was there as well. The sound near where I was at was a non point anyways. The crowd drowned out the sound of the speakers in most of the areas. It took us 16 hrs to depart the area after the concert so we did what a lot of people did and camped out. If you look behind the crowd in the distance those are not trees they are actually buildings. About a mile past that was the hotel we were staying at the time. Just for information sake we traveled with Pantera for camera crew work. Which a lot of it was confiscated before we left. You can doubt me if you would like and unfortunately the only evidence I could provide is some of the photos I have of the concert with myself and the crowd. The only really compelling pictures are of the military and most of those were seized before we left.

You can see how well this group was loved all over the world. This was a year or two before the Iron Curtain fully came down, an event set in full motion by the destruction of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Here you can see members of the Red Army, in full uniform, rocking out to this song. I have loved Metallica since I was a kid, much to the anger of the parentals. We introduced our kids to heavy metal music like Metallica with much discretion, mostly due to them not being able to understand the messages, but they used to make requests to us. One day a friend and I were sitting in the living room discussing heavy metal, how it just doesn’t have the same meaning nowadays, and which we felt was the best talents as a group and individual musicians. Daughter was about 7 at the time and she comes in to ask for a drink (she was short, needed help reaching things). She decides to weigh in with “I don’t care what you think because James Hetfield is a god of rock!” James Hetfield is the leader singer/rhythm guitarist for Metallica, so I think we did alright! 😂

The absolute mass of humanity and energy gathered in one space to simply enjoy music during such a chaotic time proves that music is a universal language and has the power to unite and heal people. It creates connection. Thanks for posting.

Metal concerts can be dangerous however metal fans are some of the most caring you'll ever meet. They will push out open spaces if someone goes down so they can get back on their feet and they will carry people out who are injured. The bands themselves keep an eye out for it, my very first concert I went to when I was 15 was Iron Maiden, during the gig the crowd collapsed and the band stopped the song until we'd all got back up. Was an epic night.

I had a similar experience at a Manowar concert. During that evening all were brothers and sisters of Heavy Metal looking out for each-other. When a guy, who looks like you don't want to encounter in a dark alley at night, offers you a hand, pulls you up, smiles, and gives you a quick hug to yell into your ear if you are ok, it puts stereotypes so much into a new perspective.

@@firstclaw1 Totally agree! I fell in love with Metal at about 14yo and went to my first big show, Queensryche opened for Metallica. I got in the pit general admission, I was 6ft 165#s maybe and got knocked on my ass real quick. Two dudes picked me up before my hands hit the floor and I was back at it! There are some assholes of course but for the most part, it's a brotherhood!!!

This is Metalica's world tour. Following the hype of the 80's, Ronald Reagan, the Miricle on Ice, the Olympics - everything - the band made it to Moscow immediately after the fall of the Soviet Union. The people were ready, the time was right and the show rocked! Yes - that's an American Flag flying in the crowd.

@Dennis Coffman I mean, that's the same as all the JDM kids who paste the Rising Sun flag on their Hondas without realizing the meaning and history behind it. Not trying to excuse the behaviour, but people are going to use symbols even if they don't fully understand them.

They're one of the greatest metal bands of all time and arguably the most well known. I would suggest listening to studio versions of their songs first then watching some live videos. "One" would be their most popular song aside from Enter Sandman. They have so many popular songs though so you can't go wrong with any of them.

Not many bands ever get to play to a crowd of over a million people, this is the music I grew up with and everywhere they played it was over packed, this was in Russia and I can bet they had the little" lada" which was Russias little compact car, they probably had 10 people packed in each one of those cars. No anti lock breaks, lane departure warning, airbags and alot more modern features. People we're responsible for there own actions and were a lot more responsible and had more respect for each other, I'm scared of what's to come with the cry babies of this generation when the flame is pasted to them. Sorry I got off on the subject but this brought back memories of how good we had it then.

This was Summer, 1991, when the Soviet Union still technically existed (dissolved day after Christmas). For something like this to happen oun the outskirts of Moscow... it was purely unprecedented. The spring had been released from its pressure (note the heavy presence of Soviet infantry ("CA" epaulets - "CA" short for Sovietskaya Armiya) - many of them getting into it just like the crowd. Metallica puts on a great show, period. Saw them here in Charlotte, and the pyrotechnics were so intense we could feel the heat in the suites (and this is way after James Hetfield, lead singer, suffered second- and third-degree burns due to a misfire while he was almost standing over the vent). At the end, Lars (drummer and original band member, along with Hetfield) mentioned their first show iin Charlotte in 1983 - and promised, "We're f***ing coming back!!!" Their fans are loyal, but they are loyal to their fans too, very much. Not so common.

I’ve been too many concerts throughout my many years, such as TLC, Madonna, Ricky Martin, pink, Bryan Adams, Richard Marx, the mamas and the Papas, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Ricky Skaggs, Boyz II Men, Public enemy, Reba McEntire, George Thorogood, Alan Jackson, plus many more…but the most fun relaxing and greatest time I’ve ever had at a concert was when I’ve been to a concert to see Metallica, AC/DC, Megadeth, iron maiden, Aerosmith, poison, motley Crue, Marilyn Manson, Alice Cooper and so many more…. the greatest time of my life.

I doubt that this turn out in future concerts will ever come close. East met west and joined together in a common cause united by Metallica.
