One of the most amazing things about Young as a guitarist is that he can give you such different sounds and textures on the acoustic and the electric, and he's incredible at both. You'd never know it was the same guitar player if you heard this version of "Old Man" and then heard "Cortez the Killer" or "Cinnamon Girl."

Harvest was released in 1972. Neil introduces the song as being NEW, so this LIVE performance could be before the album's release. Neil's voice is sublime and faultless on this recording. In response to Andrew's comment, I feel that when Neil plays Guitar, it sounds like two Guitarists. I'm watching his playing action and I'm asking myself, how is he doing that? Well, being a super human and genius may have something to do with it. After decades of listening to and watching Neil Young, I've come to a personal conclusion that he is definitely one of the best Guitarists on the Planet. I recommend that you all listen to the LIVE album called WELD, which was released in the early 90's. RUST NEVER SLEEPS is OK, though fairly weak in areas that WELD is much stronger. I'm so pleased that Neil and I share the same political opinions. BTW, Neil is a Right-Handed Guitarist.

Neil is from Canada where he started his career. He was actually in Rick James' band The Mynah Birds before moving on to Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, then going solo with the band Crazy Horse backing him. He has shared the stage with all the Greats from Bob Dylan to Willie Nelson, etc, etc.

Neil is the single greatest musician of his generation. His electric stuff has just as much impact as the acoustic, but it's his impact on other musicians, on his millions of fans, and on the music industry as a whole that boosts his legacy into a rarified place that only a tiny handful of other musicians have attained. No other musician I know of combines Neil's songwriting skills, performance mastery, genre-bending, social messaging, and unshakeable loyalty to his musical vision. It's as hard to find enough superlatives to describe Neil as it is to make a list of songs to represent his career. Keep on listening. It's a long satisfying journey.

There is this clip of Jimmy Fallon where he impersonates Neil Young and sings this song. And then, half way through, Neil Young comes on and sings it with him. And Fallon is then the younger man, singing to "ranchkeeper" Young. I don't find Fallon particularly funny... but as an impersonator he is very good. Neil Young was always a favorite singer-songwriter of mine. James Taylor is another. Storytellers. "Ohio" of course is required listening for Neil. It was done during one of the times he was with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and within a few hours. "Carry On" is another. Neil was also with Buffalo Springfield. He is Canadian so you get a slightly different flavor to his songs. A new singer-songwriter that expresses emotion well within the story is Avi Kaplan. "First Place I Go" is a brand new one of his and I highly recommend it as well.

This song. This song... I heard it first when I was 20 back when it came out. I was the young man then, and the song followed me through the many stages of my life. Now, now I'm the Old Man listening to a young man sing about how he's just like me. Love this song.

Same concert he sings Heart of Gold & plays harmonica as well as guitar & singing. Most of us reflect on a push & pull father-son relationship with Old Man or is it just me? He’s amazing.

Neil Young has been a long time favorite of mine. The songs he writes and sings feel so real to me. My late brother loved him so much, too. I have a nephew named Neil, too.

MrLboyd, to get the full Neil Young experience you should, either on your own time or on your channel, watch his concert film called Rust Never Sleeps. It was recorded in San Francisco, Ca. on Oct. 22, 1978, Neil is the director but is credited as Bernard Shakey. He starts out with about five acoustic songs then is eventually joined on stage by his electric backup band, Crazy Horse. Neil also plays piano, harmonica and of course electric guitar, and the music runs the full gamut from rock to distorted electric, and everything else in between. I've seen Neil live four times, and it has been a completely different experience each time. And all amazing in their own way. Probably my favorite artist as a person too.

Neil is a little before my time, but I've always loved "classic" rock. One of my best memories is when I was 17 in the 1997 and my dad taking me to Neil's "Bridge School Benifit" show in San Francisco area and being amazed by his live performance. As well as seeing three great harmonica players (Neil, John Popper and Alanis Morissette) along with Dave Matthews on the stage at one time. Absolutely incredible. Seeing Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson performing together was also a sight to behold. Grunge and Goth music forever! 🤘

His performance of Heart of Gold from this same show is really good and is one of the best displays of his quirky, humble personality. Neil is a hopeless romantic, and nearly every song he ever wrote, regardless of title or main topic, came down to a theme of longing or loneliness (also time and aging). That all appears in Old Man. He seems to be saying that, while not all that close to the old guy he does admire him and care for him. In his loneliness he takes some measure of comfort that the guy is always there "love lost at such a cost. Give me things that don't get lost, like a coin that won't get tossed rollin home to you". A good starting point for new Neil fans is the Decade album. It covers his career from about 1966-1976, I believe. I think there have been some other compilations released more recently though. There might be one that covers his entire career, which churns on over 50 years after it started.

Yes. "Heart of Gold" from this same concert. But the list is nearly endless. "Ohio" with Crosby, Stills, and Nash will bring you to tears if you can find the version with all the footage from Kent State. One of my favorites is the MTV Unplugged version of Harvest Moon. Probably not anyone's favorite, but that particular performance is formidable.

I really like Neil Young's music because it is so evocative. It reaches inside you and plays on your younger memories and emotions like a golden guitar. Neil is up there with James Taylor as a master song writer as well as a guitarist. So many warm familiar memories of mine are associated with Neil Young's epic music. 🥰
