One of the best live performances of any and ever. Really amazing. I love when he goes into the crowd at the end, and everyone falls dead silent. There’s no screaming, no demands for another song, no rushing the talent, etc. I just dig the utter respect. It was only a few short months later that Kurt Cobain would be found dead. Those in attendance here have a pure gold nugget of musical history in their memoirs.

Great reaction! I reccomend listening to Love, hate, love by Alice in Chains (Live at the Moore). It's one of the all time greatest live preformances. Them and Nirvana were both part of the grunge scene that came out of Seattle in the 80's and its another amazing band with an incredible vocalist.

Kurt died 5 months after this show. They ran it on TV after he died and it was like he was resurrected...very haunting, but this song is haunting and when you think back it was like he was singing about his death. The song is a really old Lead Belly blues song from the early 1900s, some say even maybe the late 1800s and was known as a murder ballad. They say this was about an African American man and woman who lived in the Appalachian mountains and was called "In The Pines". It starts off with the accusation: “My girl, my girl, don’t lie to me, tell me where did you sleep last night?” And the answer is dire: “In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine and I shiver the whole night through.” Then they talk about her husband's head being found, but his body never was. My guess is they were probably running from the KKK. Many, many artists over the generations covered it and tweaked it to their liking. Some talked about the murder and some left it out and just talked about the long train and the tall and dark pines. You could tell this dark, sad and haunting song meant a lot, which was telling. The music is what Cobain loved the most...just playing music and hated the lights and fame of it all and it finally took him down. On April 5, 1994 he shot himself. In April, it will be 30 yrs since. He was part of the "27 club". Too many young musicians died when they were 27...Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and Amy Winehouse just to name a few. Enjoyed your reaction...Just a bit of advice, pausing it just a little too much and when you do pause, hit the back arrow so it will start backup a couple of seconds before you paused it. That way you don't miss anything. You missed the climax going into the ending.

Kurt wrongly attributes the song to American black blues artist, Ledbelly, who recorded the song in the 1940s or 50s. But the song is much older than that and passed down through word of mouth. It was also called In The Pines. The venue is the television show, MTV Unplugged, where popular bands would show up and play with acoustic instead of electric guitars (even though the acoustics have electric pickups) and the drummers would either play softer or play some kind of percussion instead. Nirvana did mostly cover songs on this episode.

U guys got it right, the "Unplugged" is meaning without all electric instruments. The bands Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam, were in my opinion 2 of the best Unplugged sessions ever. Unfortunately, only about 5 months after unplugged, Kurt Cobain, the lead singer passed away. Not sure if you guys were aware based on the reaction. The drummer, Dave Grohl later became the lead singer of the band the Foo Fighters, which he is still the lead singer of to this day.

This is a very old song. They are covering the Leadbelly version. He was one of the originators (and one of the greatest) Blues artists. His version (sometimes called “Black Girl” or “In the Pines” or “My girl”) was recorded in the 1920’s. The song is older than that, though. It was an old coal mining song from the 1870’s. So, a lot of people have covered it, and there have been a few different versions.

It’s an old American southern, country-blues song, popularized by leadbelly in the 1930s or 40s but it goes way further back to at least the 1800s….lyrics could be very, very dark back then, in the swampy south, among the tall pine trees.

My theory on this song has always been the girl he is singing to is dead and he's in that stage of grief where he's in shock and denial. Coffins used to be made of pine and called Pineboxes. So right or wrong my basic theory is she's in "the pines", where the sun don't ever shine and it's cold. Which makes me think she's dead and he feels like she shouldn't be gone and has to remind himself she is. Idk maybe I'm stretching but that was always my impression of the songs lyrics.

'In the pines' was an old metaphor. If someone was 'in the pines' it meant they lost their way. The sun doesn't shine because the tree canopy is so thick and it represents being lost. Being in a dark place mentally. Its a call and answer - where did you sleep last night? answer: I was in a dark place. When he asked where will you go? she answers: I'm on the run. I'm going to be lost' . Could be she witnessed the murder of her husband and is on the run.
