Poppy was kinda my gateway to BABYMETAL. I kept hearing people say “oh she’s just a BABYMETAL knockoff” (which I don’t think is true) and went and checked them out and it turns out I fucking love BABYMETAL now. I think saying she’s a BABYMETAL knockoff isn’t fair. They give me totally different vibes. BABYMETAL is cute and innocent, whereas Poppy is more creepy and mature. They just don’t really go for the same thing, in my opinion. You’ll be even more confused if you go back and watch her early KZfaq videos, because she started as a KZfaqr. She’s got this whole “I’m an android” thing going on.

The Poppy project is definitely inspired by Babymetal. Without babymetal, she doing this wouldn't exist. She would probably be just another regular pop artist. There were also other western pop artists to incorporate metal in their songs recently and miley cyrus plans to do an album of Metallica covers. The success of Babymetal is definitely what caused this. Babymetal is what popularized this genre to the world but they were not the first one to do this. It's a Japanese thing. The Japanese didn't have a problem mixing genres so blatantly. The west has also done this pop metal thing but not as blatant as in japan. There's a swedish band called Amaranthe who also mixes pop and metal. They already existed before Babymetal. Btw, I like Poppy too.

This song is how depression actually is. Depressed person might look cheery and lively, but lot of what he/she say would have pretty dark subcontext. Just how the lyrics in this song. Also all of this sudden changes in mood - in this song, just how the mood of depressed person is. Also, the part with the jump from heavy metal to "I tried to drink coffee..." - musical quotation of The Beatles. And the part in the end, when all the cheering starts - musical quotation of The Queen.

Some of her songs are built as you said angry, happy angry (pop, metal, pop) how in X, Concrete, I Disagree, other songs are more variable sad, angry, happy (pop, synth pop, electro, rock, metal, alternative) the truth she is unique in mixing genres 😆

Additionally to my other comment, Im sure you know to not take Poppy too "seriously". Her content is primarily a satire of pop culture, the music industry, the socio-political climate... and i believe the shock factors she uses in her music aid the sarcastic tone. The mixture of genre is very interesting regardless, especially going the Babymetal route of blending pop and metal, as they are quite similar in form. Her heavier stuff exists mostly in the I Disagree album, which this song is off of. Some more heavy tunes (primarily Scary Mask) are on the Choke EP. However if you want some fun things to analyze the meaning of and to see the evolution and story of Poppy, I do suggest checking out her Am I A Girl album, Poppy . Computer album, and Bubblebath EP. Some unreleased songs and singles like Guns And Gold, Everything I Know Is Wrong, and Adored are also good content for examining/analyzing, if you end up getting into the fun of breaking down the aspects of the implications in these 😌

Thank you for the info! I had heard OF Poppy but I’d never actually gone and listened to her music. I knew it was gonna be somewhat of a weird experience and I know that the music is quite satirical. I just wasn’t expecting that at all! I’ve got a lot of stuff to check out by the sounds of it though! Thank you

I found Poppy when an article I read compared her to BABYMETAL, so I dove deep, you should too. She has amassed quite a respectable and sprawling body of work. You wont be disappointed, she is breaking new ground and is much deeper that she appears to be on the surface. Try SCARY MASK, X, I DISAGREE, CHOKE, BITE YOUR TEETH, and then go back further to really earn confusion.

Considering a lot of her songs evolve around her treatment in the music industry and her being a ‘product’- I feel that concrete is about how the industry takes in ‘young blood’ passes them around like the next best thing and consumes them until they have nothing else to give. However if they’re unappealing or can’t quite hit the mark anymore they’re abandoned and ‘buried under concrete’ just to become a path for others to fall into the same trap. It’s not an official analysis but I feel that it works.

This is her most kawaiimetal song. There are songs that so heavy such as Bite Your Teeth (my fav), Bleep Bloop and I Disagree. She's mixing the genres and you should listen to her I Disagree (more) album to understand what's she doing. I really like your reaction and waiting for more Poppy reaction videos.

She is (or was) a KZfaqr. Inspired by Japanese (alternative) idol culture, maybe going so far as to mock it - I'm not sure I fully understand her MO. She does at least understand it is meant to be entertaining and I think she does that aspect well. Where it falls a bit short is the song writing and music. Acts like BABYMETAL and BiSH have expert teams working on their material, leaving the artists to concentrate on the performance. Poppy is almost on her own and it shows in the overall quality. A lot of her songs sound like chunks of different genres randomly welded together, but she does have a few where they are blended more like an alloy, and they are the ones to seek out.

Check out I Disagree (my fave) and Scary Mask, followed by a couple of her earlier tunes and "Kids react to Poppy reacting to kids..." for an amusing reaction - then go watch one of the many youtube 'documentaries' about her and the narcissistic relationship with Titanic Sinclair etc and how she moved in to the metal world - it's quite a fascinating little rabbit hole!

She's certainly different. The last live concert I went to was Babymetal, the next concert I should have gone to was Poppy, then the world shut down. It's been rescheduled twice now but still no new date but I'm still looking forward to going seeing her. If you think this is strange have you heard of Die Antwoord? I Fink You Freeky, Baby's On Fire are a good place to start.

Same! I’m missing gigs so much right now. I did actually see BABYMETAL briefly in 2015, as they came out unannounced for Dragonforce’s final song (Through The Fire & Flames) which I thought was epic (even though I wasn’t a fan of BABYMETAL at the time.) They have played at Download again since then, but I think I was seeing someone else at the time they were on. I can’t fully remember

Just let it wash over you. No point in trying to rationalise it. I love the sheer fuck-offness of it, throwing genres into a blender along with your preconceptions. As people have said, Scary Mask (ft. Fever 333) is monstrously heavy.

I highly suggest some of her other songs, like Bite Your Teeth, Sit/Stay, or Scary Mask! I Disagree is also really good. Tbh, I love all of her newer stuff, and a good portion of her older stuff too

Its seems to be like she's trying to represent both the darkness and light in an individual. Also, how irreverence and irrelevance people have a while after death ('turn me into a street'). I'm not a Poppy expert

Last concert I saw was Poppy; not a fan. She's really a performance artist so hard to judge her musically.

The chorus in this song sounds too much like Babymetal's "Gimme Chocolate". I don't really like Poppy. In my opinion, she tries too hard to be edgy.

I kind of dig it. I like when she's singing about death and blood in that cute voice. I don't think she's edgy at all. Someone else probably wrote those lyrics. She'd be doing pop if anybody liked her pop songs.

the stuff she produces is all basically satire. thats her point. she pokes fun at like... pop culture, the music industry, the socio-political climate... stuff like that. Its not just shock factor, i believe she uses that to aid the sarcastic tone, and add a bit more personality to the content.

@@Jordan-Ramses There are good ideas in her songs. But I don't like her stage persona. There's also the Mars Argo lawsuit (plagiarism allegations and so on) that bothers me.

@@Egil29 that lawsuit was settled already and happened mostly because Poppy was being manipulated in her abusive relationship 😩 she did apologise for her past actions that did occur while in the relationship at one point though, having to refer to the Mars Argo situation vaguely due to the terms of the suit. If that puts you at ease at all.
