John Deacon( Bass Player)Wrote this song. This video was nothing to do of Freddie for his sexual Life. That Dress up in Drag part was inspired from the British Soap opera called Coronation Street it was the idea of Roger Taylor's partner(Dominique)at that time to sort of Pastiche from that soap opera which is very popular in British at that time. But in America they didn't get the whole Joke so they banned the Video. And sadly they lost America from it ..... but Life Still Goes for Freddie and Queen.

The ballet section is basically in there because Freddie was a huge fan of the ballet and happened to be friends with a lead dancer at the Royal Ballet at the time, who helped with the choreography and got the dancers to come along and be in the video. Ironically, given that Freddie was a very naturally gifted performer when doing his own thing on stage, he proved to be absolutely terrible at taking choreography from other people, and thus his character in the ballet sequence doesn't actually do much in the way of set dance moves. But Freddie hugely enjoyed doing it and even shaved off his moustache for the part, something that he notably didn't do for the sections where he's dressed as a woman, adding to the bizarre (and very British) humour.

The dressing as women thing isn’t so much about Freddie being gay. There’s a traditional type of Christmas play in Britain called pantomime… it’s usually very funny and the main male actor plays a woman, and it has a female actor playing a man. So when British people saw this for the first time, they didn’t think it was outrageous or political… they just recognized it as a funny situation. Also the part with all the dancers and tight costumes was Freddie experimenting with ballet, which he loved. He actually shaved his mustache off just for this part.

Yes that is a guy dressed up as a schoolgirl, that is Roger Taylor (the drummer), and it was his girlfriends idea for the band to dress up in drag (an ancient comedy tradition). Freddie Mercury in the leather skirt doing the cleaning. Brian May in the pink dressing gown with curlers in his hair (as if he needed them). John Deacon (who wrote this song) in the black outfit trying to read a newspaper. This video did a lot of damage to Queens American career, thanks in part to the sense of humor failure of MTV, who banned it.

You can tell this is written by John Deacon the bass player. He’s the one dressed as a grumpy granny. It has a strong heavy bass/ drum beat to the song. He wrote some of their best songs. We are used to seeing men and women cross dressing in the UK. As many of us go to see a pantomime at Christmas. A family occasion. This song is nothing about Fred’s sexuality. It’s about someone who has done something for a long time and is thinking of doing something different. A fact that John at the time was thinking off.

HEY HONEY, I LOVE YOUR REACTIONS! Watching you watching this video was hilarious and fun... I know others have already explained that this actually had nothing to do with Freddie's sexuality, although everyone understandably assumes that. The weird "dream sequence" was based on a ballet and the dancers in that part were Freddie's friends, ballet dancers with the London Royal Ballet... whom he got acquainted with back in 1979, when he took part in a ballet production with them for a charity event! ...That's a whole FUN story in-itself: They asked Freddie to participate because he made it well-known that he LOVED ballet, and because of the way he dressed onstage/danced around in the Queen shows, they assumed that he knew how to dance ballet... but when he arrived to rehearse with the ballet company, they found out that NO, he didn't know how to dance AT. ALL. :D So, the charity show had the ballet dancers CARRYING Fred around the stage while he sang Bohemian Rhapsody. ;D (This is a link to the Royall Ballet charity performance): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d8qGi62c2Jatn4E.html

This video got them practically banned in the US because they were in drag. The American audience just did not get the British tradition of drag and that it was a parody of a British soap called Coronation Street. The idea wasn't even Freddie's, like a lot thought when they first saw it, it was Brian's idea for them to do it in drag. They never regained popularity in the US again until the famous scene in Wayne's World where they play Bohemian Rhapsody in the car with the head banging.

That's right The Drag thing is a European thing and US never really into the comedy of it. Same for when Men greet each other in Europe they may kiss on the side of the cheeks and its normal but in the US that would be WOW that is not right.

Thanks, Taiwo - this song was actually written by bass-player John Deacon (VERY hetero - six kids) - and it was Roger (drummer's) girlfriend who suggest the "drag" - they all thought it was funny - especially b/c it was based on characters from a popular British "soap" called "Coronation Street" - it was NOT about Freddie "coming out" -- and the London Royal Ballet participated as an artistic element -- so misunderstood - but so many could not get past the video to enjoy the SONG itself - in the U.S. -- "drag" is such a common element in Britain, that people just laughed.. (and they recognized the reference to the show they were familiar with) but in U.S. at the time, it was considered "shocking! - and must MEAN something about Freddie's sexuality..." - so wrong...
