I too was kinda not sure about the vocals at first, but after getting into their catalogue and reading up on her background (she’s a trained jazz/r&b singer) I actually really enjoy the vocals. Asami’s vocals are super unique and I think give an edge to making Lovebites stand out among the wave of Japanese metal/rock acts. But I think in the end, it’s just up to personal taste. Also, can we talk about the bass player, Miho? She is fantastic! I feel like she doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. I love watching her play because she is just having so much and just headbangs like there’s no tomorrow. I recommend checking out the live version of Break The Wall.

These girls are so humble. They always give credit to Iron Maiden, Metallica, Priest etc., but honestly, I think they have surpassed all those bands in sheer chops. Just play Maiden's "Aces High" back to back with Lovebites' "The Crusade" and you'll realize it's like comparing a six-shooter to phasers. Only one quibble: you need to give more love to Miho. She is the soul of the band, and had the foresight to recruit four off-the-charts talents to work with her (she knew Haruna from their previous band together, Destrose, as others have pointed out). She often gets overshadowed, but she is remarkable.

@jacklambert5858 Don't make assumptions. I saw Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Nazareth, Queen and lots more, live in their heyday. I love and respect the bands that founded the genre. I'm just realistic: Just as athletes today would easily beat athletes from 40 years ago, based on superior training, technique, nutrition etc., music has progressed. It's not a slam on the old bands, it's just the truth, and I celebrate it. The world would suck if there weren't constant progress. But go ahead, play Aces High vs. The Crusade, and the difference is impossible to ignore.

@jacklambert5858 As you said, it's a matter of taste, so how can anyone be right or wrong? You don't even know what my premise is--but it's not just about speed. You brought up "feeling" in the songs--that's entirely subjective. I was just talking about technical skill--read my original post. Again, I've been a fan of metal since before it was even a term. Permit me to have my own opinions. I will say, since many of the old bands aren't even around anymore, if I want to hear new material, it requires embracing the new and appreciating it. It's not either/or. As for HGH, sports are more than NFL football, though from your handle you're obviously a fan. Track and field records are constantly being improved, even if you remove the tainted performances. Anyway, each to his own. Peace.

@jacklambert5858 whatever. I was also a Doors fan before JM died. I saw Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin live. Are we going to get into a fight over who is older, let alone something totally subjective? I didn't say this band is "Better". I said they are technically better. Just as Purple broke technical ground Airplane never dreamed of. And Metallica took it beyond Purple. To your point, Dragonforce are technically superior to Metallica, but I'd rather listen to Metallica. It's all up to taste. I happen to think Lovebites have captured lightning in a bottle, as they say.

I love Asami's vocals, but I'm used to her sound. Some people think she oversells the vibrato, but it's just a matter of taste. It's certainly consistent with powermetal as a style, though she originally came from a R&B background.

Her vocals grow on you quickly. When i first heard this song i thought she wasnt the best match but as i listened over time i began to appreciate the demands on her voice and how well she pulls it off, especially live. I think what i enjoy most are the little fills and transitions in their song structure. Miyako is said to be the brains behind the notes and given she undoubtedly has full mastery of music theory due to her classical training its no wonder things sound so cohesive. Blurry notes bands can get repetitive and boring after a while but there seems to be lots of different sounds in their arsenal and the 4 albums cover a pretty wide range of rock/metal.

here are some other songs to check out. shadowmaker - the crusade - rising - don't bite the dust - those are earlier mv's. later stuff is thunder vengeance - holy war - swan song and this song from the newest cd. the first time i heard them in 2017 i was also a bit unsure about asami's voice but it definitely grows on you and now i love it - it almost in a way sounds operatic and goes well with the type of power metal that they play.they are instrumentally insane and not to tough to look at either!

You should try Thunder Vengeance LIVE, they released it on their YT couple days ago, its a more thrashy song. I agree with you with Asami's voice, took me a couple songs to get used to it, but i really like it now, i feel it fits the vibe of the songs. (she comes from an R&B/Soul background btw, this is her 1st venture into Metal).

I think the vocals are great, but I'm used to Japanese singers. Heavy vibrato is more of a thing in Japan than in the West. Hugely popular singers like Akina Nakamori (I chose her as an example because she's my avatar photo) are known for it. Also, vocals in general in Japanese music tend to be mixed louder than in Western music. People who aren't that used to it can get thrown off at first, but once they're used to it, they usually like it.

Lovebites is considered power metal, but they have so much diversity. You should react to their thrash songs. There are live versions of these thrash songs - "Break The Wall", "Thunder Vengeance", "The Hammer of Wrath" and "M.D.O. These songs really shred!

Now imagine this for almost 2 hours straight. Live. With not one beat or note missed. They premiered the most recent DVD on KZfaq not too long ago and that's exactly what it was. These women are f****** incredible. Don't sleep on them. Seriously. This is not a gimmick. They're the real fucking deal. Also that vibrato thing is a very Japanese thing. It's a super traditional style of singing and you hear it a lot in their music cuz I mean..... Power metal man. It just fits. I think there's actually a term for that style of singing but I can't remember it currently and I ain't about to look it up right now cuz I'm on my phone and s***. Sorry 😂

As a power metal freak, it is a vocal genre of it's own, be it Priest, Maiden, Helloween, Dragonforce...her voice IS perfect for it, however , when a person (especially dealing with the crap they've heard for years now when power metal has been so rare) can be a WTF moment, UNTIL you listen to them, go back to their first album, go forward, it takes less than a few songs before you get use to both her ever improving accent and her vocals and like every one I know, you will then "feel" it and all will be well. I know,m I have every album they've released and I too, for about 3 days, felt strange about Asami (the vocalist) and then it went away and I understood and now I would have her sing no other way.

Felt the same way first time hearing them. Amazing musicians but not feeling the vocals. After listening to more of their stuff I got used to it and saw how it fit their sound perfectly and now I listen to them daily as a huge fan. They have great music videos for Shadowmaker, The Crusade, Rising, and Golden Destination, and they sound incredible live, with Break the Wall and Thunder Vengeance that just dropped from their new Bluray (my copy is on the way). That all said I highly recommend We The United from their Daughters of the Dawn tour last year. Great arena anthem.

There is a Japanese original soul music 'Enka' in Japan. Its singer can use many types of vibratos. Of course, I don't think the vocalist asami sing like that. But most Japanese consider a singer using many vibratos as a good one. So that may influence her way of singing.

It takes a song or two to kinda get used to it. She's got a great voice but can be a little over the top sometimes. But the more songs you listen to her voice fits the band. I saw a video of them playing this song live and they pretty much play it exactly the same.

Lovebites is a great band. Asami the singer does have a good voice. I just think they mixed the vocals for their desired effect.. I’m used to it so I think it sounds good. But the guitarists are both next level talent and it’s not fair that one band gets them both. The drummer is also very impressive. She just chugs like a machine. So many good songs to check out. They just released a new live video on their KZfaq channel.....Thunder Vengeance.... That is a good one to check out next. Other good songs are Hammer of Wrath, Break the Wall, Shadows of the Night , Rising. All good songs.

My advice to all young reactors who just barely listening to Lovebites give Asami a chance she will grow on you. When Queensryche came out back in 83 I had a hard time getting used to Geoff Tate vocals and accused him of trying to hard to sound like Rob Halford of Judas and I was wrong when I heard the first album after the EP mini
