Before they were a great 80's pop band, REO was an awesome 70's rock band, especially live. Check out the live version of "Golden Country" and "Riding the Storm Out" from their live album "You Get What You Play For".

This is REO when they’re at their best - ROCKING! I don’t care much for their power ballads, but their early rocking period was awesome! “Golden Country”, and “Like You Do” from “You Get What You Play For” kick a$$.

I saw them do this song live on TV, it was flawless. Another great band out of our Mid-West United States. Most recently, a year or so ago, they were featured on the Netflix series Ozark. The band is named after a company that built light trucks through the 1970s. REO is the initials of the founder.

Hi Harri. Thanks, as always, for your fun and great reactions. This band got its start in Champaign, Illinois, several hours south of Chicago, where I lived most of my life. They were played a ton on radio in that area and era. If you like this song, try "Say You Love Me, or Say Goodnight" from the same album. That one will get your blood pumping even more! Thanks again for all you do here!

This was one of my favorite songs for a minute. I love the change over from Neil on the piano/keyboard to Gary 😇 guitar. Too bad the "changes" they were talking about was their change in their overall product with "Hi Infidelity" It got them their well deserved millions but was a drastic change to the dark side of HI. I bought the album the day it was released. Listened to it twice and sent it to my 12-year-old sister and said, "You're gonna love this." She didn't. She couldn't even believe it was REO. THIS was the good stuff. It's a crime they're not in the R&R HOF Three times baby😎😎😎

REO's path is very similar to the band Chicago. In their start, they were knocking out the hard and heavy classics but switched to ballads later on. Ballads made them both more popular but those of us who love hard rock are so very disappointed. And it isn't just these two bands, there are numerous others, another example is Def Leppard.

Deep thanks to Jamie A.! Too often, the only REO songs that get listened to are the two #1 songs from the 1980s, which are fine for those who like that, but which seem pretty weak to me. The songs from the 1970s, such as this, have much more zest to them. And Gary Richrath really gets to cut loose with his guitar, whereas he's largely neutered on that 1980s stuff (and was eventually forced out of the band). Money isn't everything, REO may have prospered as "soft-rock", but they're better doing actual ROCK. Might I suggest "Ridin' the Storm Out", "Golden Country" or "Like You Do" next? Where possible, use a live recording, such as from the "You Get What You Play For" album or the many concerts on KZfaq. Not only does the band really come alive (the reason the record label kept letting them make records even when they took a LONG time to break through is that they were a FANTASTIC live band), but also they went through three different lead singers early on, so if you're used to Kevin Cronin's vocals, the concerts are a good way to hear Kev sing songs he wasn't the original vocalist on. Keep on rollin', indeed!
