I was 10 myself and I love watching the reactions to a song I've loved for55+ years.. My favorites, and this isn't racist, is how so many can't fathom it being a white guy with that amazing vocal range from B2 to E6 ad he did it so effortlessly and the girls who cannot keep from getting weepy. Although it was originally part of a prison movie, the timing of this version coincided with all the troops in Viet Nam and the hopes/prayers that they'd come home safe

The Righteous Brothers were the hottest act in the mid-sixties. They had 22 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 and three albums on the top 20 simultaneously. Their first hit, 'You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling'. Was the most played song of the 20th century and well into the 21st, and is listed in the Library of Congress as 'culturally significant'.

This was extremely popular in Vietnam among American troops (although I have no idea why… 🤔😉). Most of the time it was played quietly and intimately, most commonly while the serviceman was looking at his wife’s or girlfriend’s picture(s). It was rarely ever blared loudly like rock, CW, R&B, etc. If played in an enlisted or officers’ club, it was subdue the place to silence.

When The Righteous Brothers would go into the recording studio to record an album, each of them would sing one song sung solo. Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley both wanted to record “Unchained Melody”, which was a song in an obscure 1950s prison film, “Unchained”, that was covered successfully by numerous music artists. They decided to make a coin toss to resolve the issue. Bobby Hatfield won the coin toss. The Righteous Brothers were a California-based singing duo that sang R & B-inspired songs, which the music press called “blue-eyed Soul” music. Their greatest musical success was in the 1960s, with hit songs such as this one, “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”, “Soul And Inspiration”, and others. The Righteous Brothers re-recorded “Unchained Melody” for the “Ghost” Movie Soundtrack, and it also became a hit. The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2003, a few months prior to Bobby Hatfield’s death from a cocaine overdose at the age of 63. Bill Medley is still alive, and still touring. Medley teamed up with Jennifer Warnes to record the hit duet song, “I Had The Time Of My Life” for the “Dirty Dancing”Soundtrack Album in 1987, and the song won Medley his only Grammy Award of his career.

The 1960s, 70s and 80s was the golden age of popular music.(I first heard this song in 1965 as a child and have loved it ever since.) The generations after missed out on so much! At least you can catch some of that music on You Tube. As an Aussie I suggest you react to our most fabulous singer, John Farnham (who can also hit the high notes and is a counter-tenor like Bobby, here). If you like love songs then you'll thoroughly enjoy, 'Burn For You,' co-written by John Farnham, performed LIVE with his band and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The Righteous Brothers are Bill Medley (not in this video) and Bobby Hatfield (who performed Unchained Melody SOLO). They're from southern California and were the opening act on The Beatles first American tour. Then they became one of the house groups on ABC-TV's primetime series "Shindig!" where they gained most of their national recognition. "Unchained Melody" was about their fourth or fifth hit single. To hear the two of them together, I suggest you listen to "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'." They are magical together. And "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" is another great one. But nobody ever does a reaction to their first big hit, "Little Latin Lupe Lu," which Bill wrote, and became a mainstay song in every rock 'n roll cover band's repertoire in the '60s. That's right, these two also did rock and roll. Maybe the best duo to come out of the rock era of popular music. Also, the reason why the audience was so "chill" is because this was taped in a network television studio for NBC-TV's primetime series, "The Andy Williams Show," a musical variety show hosted by, well, Andy Williams, who was one of the older generation's favorite crooners (and one helluva talent in his own right). Since the audience was there to watch a TV show being taped in the controlled environment of a TV studio, you can bet they were briefed ahead of time to sit quietly, except when they were applauding at the beginning and end of each performance. That said, it's fair to say that in the 1960s, audiences understood they were there to WATCH AND LISTEN to performances, not inject themselves into the performance and become a part of it like the unruly assholes we have in modern society nowadays routinely do.

The original song "Unchained Melody" was written and composed in 1955 for a prison movie called "Unchained*. It was originally sung by the first African American Opera Singer, Mr. Todd Duncan. As time went on it has had a little over fifteen hundred recordings of it with about six hundred and seventy artists singing it in multiple languages. It was the most played song in all of America and throughout the UK in the Twentieth Century. Among the artists also was Kinda Ronstadt and also Elvis Presley. The song came out also in several more movies especially in one of my favorites in 1990 called 'Ghost". Starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. Since they wanted the very best version of anybody singing it in 1965 that was on The Andy Williams Show back in the day. And needless to say it was Mr. Bobby Hatfield of a duo called "The Righteous Brothers. Though Mr. Bobby Hatfield was not a Opera singer the only other person that at the time had a "perfect pitch" was a beautiful lady called Mariah Carey. Though she did not sing that particular song. The kind of sound that The Righteous Brothers had is what was labeled, "Blue Eyed Soul" and with good reason. Through the years we have learned that for one reason or another, they just don't write or sing very many Beautiful Romantic Love Songs like this anymore. It is truly everlasting and well worth listening to especially when one is in love and it is for real. I really enjoyed listening to it once more and not from a studio but from a "LIVE" performance. I really appreciate you playing it young man. Have a Blessed Evening. Adios.

I truly love young people reacting to the Righteous Brothers' music and the absolute beauty in their singing with a depth that makes it even more beautiful. The era in which this song was realized was in the Vietnam War. Young men were drafted as soon as they turned 18 and sent to fight in a brutal war that changed their views on life. To be young and in love meant the boyfriend was going to war, 💔 He's asking his girl to wait for him to return, but many sadly didn't return. The song "Blue Velvet" by Bobby Darrin was another popular song that was also extremely popular. Sad times for America then.

I derive a great deal of enjoyment witnessing others experience these past artists. I had just become a teenager when this performance was aired on the Andy Williams Show. My parents were big fans, and we had but one TV, so... I had already heard then on the local radio. We had one AM station that played music other than CW. Anyway, I saw that performance when it aired and was blown away. I knew this was something special. I never dreamed almost 50 years later it would have the same impact on other hearing it for the first time. An upside to growing old, I suppose.

I heard that this was the first time Bobby's mom heard him sing for live audience. Check out Bill and Bob next, singing "you've lost that loving feeling" for the full RIGHTEOUS BROS. experience ♥️💞

That's how it makes me feel too. There were two "brothers" but the other one didn't have a part for this. They said back when they had no name they played down in the south and someone said "That's righteous, brother!" And that's where their name came from.

“Unchained Melody” is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the little-known prison film Unchained (January 1955), hence the song title.

Not many people in all these years have had a voice like Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. He could sing much higher than many women, strong and effortlessly, and still sounding masculine.

When the Righteous Brothers recorded an album, right from the beginning they agreed to have each one have a solo on the album. Unchained Melody was Bobby Hatfield's solo from I think their 2nd album. This song was actually written in 1955 for a prison movie titled "Unchained" , hence the title Unchained Melody. There are some 1700 recordings by many people. Theirs is by far the best arrangement, vin my opinion.

The original of this video has the intro that explains the other member of the duo didn't sing on this one thinking it wasn't going to be a hit. But yes there are two and they were amazing! This is the THE TIMELESS CLASSIC of all their music do to Hatfields vocal range.

love your reaction...Bobbie Hatfield 'made' that song (not saying he wrote it - he didn't) but no one since then comes close to what he did!

I watched this when it aired. Impressive. As near as I can work the math, my brother was born nine months after this song came out. Songs like this are why people got married back then, why they dedicated themselves to each other. There are no songs like this today.

You don’t need autotune when you have pure talent. I love watching young people being blown away by the music of “my day”! The original studio version came out earlier and was a big hit. But this more dramatic version blew me away! Somehow, I had never seen this video until it popped up on my phone 3 years ago and I’ll turn 79 in less than a month. Google the Righteous Brothers. Bring up the complete video, which shows both Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley chatting with Andy Williams on his show before Bobby sings.
