The Righteous Brothers were the definition of blue eyed soul. Bobby Hatfield was the tenor on the left and Bill Medley the baritone on the right. This song, which was the most played on radio and tv in the 20th century, was released in December of 1964. Both of them were only 24 at that time. Early in their career they were performing at a club near El Toro Marine Base and Black Marines would say things like "That's righteous, brother" about their singing. That's where the name came from. (You're My) Soul and Inspiration should be next up. I Just Wanna Make Love to You, unfortunately not live, is another great one. Bobby does an absolutely raving version of Summertime, which is live.

You are exactly right. The name of the club was John's Black Derby In Santa Ana. It's interesting to note that at the time they were called The Paramours and they almost never became The Righteous Brothers if it weren't for Papa Bear Mike Patterson. It's a great story related by Bill Medley himself.

I was fortunate to see the Righteous Brothers in person. I was an 18 year old. These singers were loved by both people of color and white folks. I was born in the 50's and raised in both the 50's and 60's. These two decades were a time of great upheaval and change. The music that , was created gave us an escape to concentrate on the things that mattered to us all. Vietnam was escalating each year. Many young people played this music on their way to war. This music will never die and is being discovered by a new generation. Keep the music alive my soul brother. Peace be with you always.

Back in the 60s I was blessed to see the Righteous Brothers at the Circle Star Theater in Redwood City California😊 Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley would send chills up your spine listening to the beautiful sound of their voices with amazing lyrics❤ Bobby Hatfield was the high-pitched voice and Bill Medley with his amazing low voice😊 Years later after Bobby got sick Bill took care of him until he passed away and that is a beautiful story to research check it out you'll enjoy it what love for your neighbor, which is what we were put in this world to do❤

The only thing that could make that vid any cooler, is if Bobby, after sitting patiently for Bill to do his bit, had stood up, and thrown a cigarette away, swigged the last of a can down and crushed it! Sorry, my imagination runs away with me sometimes. Everything about this, the soaring voices behind them, the strings, the Wall of Sound, the silhouettes, the grainy black and white, Bill begging, Bobby wailing, the rocking out at the end ... baby, baby, pleassssse! Still love it after all these years.

It's WAY better when you hear both of them together! This was the most played song on radio worldwide in the 20th century! They started out in a vocal quintet called The Paramours. When the group split up, Bill & Bobby continued performing together as Hatfield & Medley. They were performing at a nightclub right next to a marine corps base in Southern California and one night, one of the marines (a black guy) stood up and yelled, "That was Righteous, Brothers!", and the name stuck. When I lived in Las Vegas in the mid-90s, they used to play there all the time and I got to see them live there several times. Even 30 years after the hits, they still sounded incredible. Other great songs of theirs are Soul & Inspiration (sort of a sequel to You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'), Rock & Roll Heaven, Ebb Tide, Justine and Little Latin Lupe Lu.

Efffing LOVE the smile on your face brutha!!! That my friend is what great music does..😁 I used to work for Bill & Bobby in the mid 90’s as part of their secdetail; BOTH just as they seemed... down to earth, ready with a polite greeting, and quick witted with infectious humor!! Bobby IS related to the famous Hatfield’s of “Hillbilly Feud” fame, his grandfather moved the family out west soon after. Also, a little known Cherilyn Sarkisian or “Cher” was one of the backup singers in the background!

This was 1967. Black radio stations thought these were two black guys. When it was put out that they were white black stations across the country banned the song from airplay and that just isn't right. Great music is great music, I was nine when this song came out and I loved it. So much great music back then, you have no idea and no auto tune crap like today, you had to be able to sing. The black music in the sixties was incredible. Now you want to hear the greatest of all time , check out The Beatles my man. Nobody ever did it better !

The Righteous Brothers hit you with their "Thunder" (Bill Medley: Deep Baritone) and "Lightning" (Bobby Hatfield: High Tenor), as you can see & hear, together they are "unmatched" and a force to be reckoned with!!! Their voices just go together and they blend so well like "peanut butter & jelly," "fish & chips," "rice & beans," "mac & cheese," "cake & ice cream," "salt & pepper," "shrimp & grits," burgers & fries," "milk & cookies," etc., etc...I believe you get the picture!!! The next song to react to by them is "Soul and Inspiration," as they continue to "deliver the goods!!!" These dudes are some pure soulful brothers!!!

“The Righteous Brothers” are considered by most to be the Greatest Male Vocal Duet Of All Time. I agree. Between Bill Medley’s Lows and Bobby Hatfield’s Highs they can hit every note on an 88 key piano. No other male singers can do that. Legendary. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin” was the most played song on radio in the 20th Century. "Unchained Melody" - Bobby Hatfield Live 1965. Considered by most as The Greatest Live Male Vocal Performance In History... I agree. Bobby's use of "Runs" is brilliant. He is the master of the technique and started the trend. 7 notes just to say the word "I".... Their name came when they did a show in a smaller venue and a black man told them…. You two Brothers are Righteous. In 1983, in Newport Beach O.C. Calif. Bill and Bobby at the Jolly Roger Restaurant . I was 13 feet away for... "Unchained Melody"- "You've Lost That Lovin’ Feelin‘" - "Soul And Inspiration".... They were perfect, awesome, amazing, incredible......

I was a little 10 year old girl when this came out. We all loved it, our families loved it. We little kids used to say, "Yaw, one of the Righteous Brothers Mama was Black!" LOL! You didn't have to be grown to feel the love and longing these men successfully communicated in this song. It came out in December, 1964, the same month and year Sam Cooke was murdered and a beloved Aunt died. Because of that, and the fear of loss of love they sing about, this song still is beautiful and haunting for me. One of my all time favorite songs and performances FOR EVER!

I was camping at Bass Lake Provincial Park at the time. Please check out Bill Medley's "Brown Eyed Woman", so I can see your reaction. It came out about a year or 2 later and Bill is singing it with a girl chorus to give him background vocals, without Bobby Hatfield, the other Righteous Brother. It's a sad song/tune in which Bill reveals just how raunchy he can sing.

It might be from the sixties, but it got new life when Tom Cruise sang it to Kelly McGillis in Top Gun. Great sing from my youth, always reminds me of my Swedish girl friend, we were both au pairs in Westport Ct, I was from Denmark. She loved this song and also "When a man loves a women". I stayed in the US, she went back to Sweden, but were still friends 55 years later.

I love the 50s and 60s myself I was born in 67 but when we had family game night my parents would break out their 45s... All of us that was raised in the 70s and 80s to me don't know about everyone else but it was like relaxed and laid back days .. I can remember taking a nap on the couch with the door wide open and know I would be safe and nobody would bother me and now it's like soon as I get in the house I better lock and dead bolt the door it's sad .... We need to get back to treating everyone like they are your brother like The Hollie's said He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother...

Everytime I hear this I think of the the first time I "officially" went to a bar after I turned 21. An after work drink with friends. When my now husband and I walked in this was playing. They threw me in a chair and started singing to me. It became a thing with our group. Especially at weddings when we all started getting married. The bride sat in a chair on the dance floor and the guys sang this to us.💜 Good times. Good friends.

On youtube... type in the search window "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" and "Top Gun"... played a big part in the movie. Definitely watch the closing credits. Movie is from 1987 with Tom Cruise.

I'm 60 years old and grew up on this kind of music. I am LOVING you reactions!! Back then it was pure talent, not a bunch of machines making a voice sound better that it really was. You should listen to Credence Clearwater Revival, the Allman Brothers when you get a chance.

I was just a little kid during this unbelievable era and hearing the most incredible music coming out of a crappy AM radio in the car as I rode around with my mom while she was running errands. It can never be duplicated.

There's a pretty cool little story about how they became the righteous Brothers. They were singing at a military I believe a military installation and the audience being a bunch of young military men were listening to them in a concert and someone in the audience yelled out something to the effect that you're righteous Brothers they like the music so well they told him that they were righteous and Bobby Hatfield and Bill medley like that and decided to call themselves The righteous Brothers that's how the righteous Brothers came into being other than the fact that the music label kind of put them together but they didn't actually have a name yet and that concert at the military installation was how they got the name righteous Brothers.

I heard (not sure it's true, mind you) that they were singing live when they first got started and someone hollered "that's righteous, brother". And the rest is history. I had a huuuuge fan crush on Bill Medley back in the day 😊

If you liked this one, please react to Soul and Inspiration. It was written as a follow-up to the success of this song by the same writers, features both "brothers", and peaked at #1 in the US for three straight weeks in 1966. And a tidbit: one of the female back-up singers in this song was a 18 year old named Cherilyn Sarkisian; today she is simply known as Cher.

How they got there name: They adopted the The for the duo because (while performing in a club in California) after a set one of the black Marines from the El Toro Marine base yelled out "That's " The name stuck.

When they were just getting started they performed at a club in El Toro California. A group of black Marines from camp Pendelton were there and one of the Marines jumped up and yelled out, "That's righteous!" The rest is history. And yes, this is absolutely true.
