I named my golden retriever Maggie after this song. She has passed on but she lives forever in my heart and this song.

This is a true story, Rod told it before. When he was young, Maggie, who was much older than him actually seduced him and used him for a time of pleasure then left him.

My mom's been deaf most of her life but for a short while she had a cochlear implant and she would listen to this *a lot* and it became one of my favorite songs because of it. Another one she liked was Horse With No Name by America. Another solid track.

The studio version is the classic. Perfect. He was doing the "Michael Jackson" stuff way before Michael. I so relate to this! I had the same relationship with a woman 7 years older than me when I was a very young man. Lotta pain in the end. Yea, I wish I'd never seen her face too!

When we first heard this on the radio, 5 decades ago now, (!) it was like the blinders were removed from our eyes! Great song, great album, and another song from the same album is “Mandolin Wind”, as well as “Reason To Believe”.

Check out Rod Stewart, Sting and Brian Adams "All for love." It was the on the sound for the movie The three Musketeers . The movie starred Chris Donnell, Oliver Platt, Charlie sheen and Keifer Sutherland, one of my favorites. Oh and if you ever watched the one of many Star trek shows called Enterprise staring Scott Bakula, than you heard Rod Stewart. He sang the theme song

This song was inspired by the woman who deflowered Stewart when he was 16. In the January 2007 issue of Q magazine, Stewart said: "'Maggie May' was more or less a true story, about the first woman I had sex with, at the Beaulieu Jazz Festival." Wrote Stewart: "At 16, I went to the Beaulieu Jazz Festival in the New Forest. I'd snuck in with some mates via an overflow sewage pipe. And there on a secluded patch of grass, I lost my not-remotely-prized virginity with an older (and larger) woman who'd come on to me very strongly in the beer tent. How much older, I can't tell you - but old enough to be highly disappointed by the brevity of the experience."

As I interpreted it, Rod came to 'Maggie' (or allowed her into his circle after she pursued him) on the understanding he was looking for a friend or mentor, but instead she seduced him for selfish pleasure.

I think Maggie worked in a brothel. It was about him losing his virginity. In my opinion the best song he had was "Every Picture Tells a Story ". His band's name was Faces. Ron Wood of The Rolling Stones was the guitar player.

Glad you chose this live version to react to. There's a live version of him doing this song that's just total dogshit. Dude must of been incredibly high because he flubbed almost all the lyrics, he couldn't carry a tune, etc., etc..
