Sammy Davis Jr. was an American singer, dancer, actor, comedian, film producer & television director. He was also part of the famous "Rat Pack", led by his friend Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop & Peter Lawford. He appeared in many movies, television & performed in Las Vegas. Sammy had some great songs such as "Hey There", "Something’s Gotta Give", "That’s Entertainment", "Me & My Shadow", I've Gotta Be Me", "The Candy Man", "Mr. Bojangles" etc.

Slick Back Mr Cool was a Black Jew with one glass eye (seriously). He would play in Las Vegas at clubs that he was not allowed to stay in. He was always loved by people of every flavor, but the laws were the laws. I saw him many times on television and in movies and thought he was a good singer. When I saw him live in Vegas, it changed everything for me. He took the whole audience on an emotional journey for an hour that was unforgettable. Sammy Davis Jr. was one of the many performers in the 60s & 70s that you had to see live before you discovered their amazing talent to connect with every single person in an audience on a personal level.

I`m so happy to see Mr Davis making his way into the mix of people being reacted to. He was truly one of the greats and deserves to be remembered as much as any of the others from that Rat Pack. He had a guest appearance on a Shirley MacLaine movie from the late 60`s, Sweet Charity, he played a preacher and I`m not sure that he even had any lines but he had an amazing performance of a song called The Rhythm Of Life, there may be a few versions of him performing the song live on KZfaq but try to find the clip from the movie which is both an amazing performance and is funny because of the crazy colors of the clothes they are wearing

Sammy Davis Jr was an ultimately accomplished entertainer who was a singer, dancer, actor and comedian. He almost died in a horrific car accident in which he lost an eye among other serious injuries, but survived because Frank Sinatra used his connections to threaten the hospital staff who were refusing to treat Sammy. He also made a guest appearance on All In The Family where he planted a kiss on Archie Bunker for one of the shows best comedy moments.

Sammy belonged to that group of performers that my parents loved, and so I thought they were corny and lame. I was the close-minded stupid one, not them. Sammy, and his friends, were great. Mr. Bojangles, was a real man. He did a lot of performing on the stage, and danced in movies in the 30s. I believe he danced with little Shirley Temple, too.

Thanks, AB. He was considered the world’s greatest entertainer. He was a singing and tap dancing child prodigy too. In this video, I’m guessing he’s in his 70’s here. He was one of the greatest tappers ever- lots of vids!! Great one of him having a tap off with Gregory Hines. He was also a highly celebrated actor on Broadway and on film. One of his greatest movie roles was Sportin’ Life in the opera, Porgy and Bess- starring our dearly departed Sidney Poitier!

He was iconic. I'm sure he went thru a lot of discrimination, but as a child in the sixties, I saw him on black and white TV almost every week. There were lots of variety musical shows during that era, and we saw so many wonderful singers. Black or white, they were just great singers to us. Jimmy Durante or Louis Armstrong. Dionne Warwick or Andy Williams. Sammy Davis and Frank Sinatra. They were all a part of my childhood that made me appreciate people with talent. No matter what the color. Christmas wasn't Christmas without Bing Crosby and the Great Nat King Cole.

He's referring to the first tine he did this song in Germany for a UNICEF Charity show, that's it the best I have ever seem him in like 71' He had the crowd all around him, it was magical, you could see the crowd. Not going to lie, as a 57 year old man I cry when I see that version, its the best performance I have ever seen. Frank Sinatra said Sammy was the most talented of the all.

I am getting close to 67. We rarely had a working tv until I was an adult and bought one, but when we did, we listen to the Rat Pack, Mitch Miller and Lawrence Welk. What great singers we had back then. I love all of them. The Rat Pack were comedians, actors and great singers. What ever happened to the great ones in the U.S.? I think Avi Kaplan is one of the only great singers we have now, in this country.

The song “Mr. Bojangles” was about Bill Robinson, nicknamed Bojangles (1878 - 1949), who was an American tap dancer, actor, and singer, the best known and the most highly paid African-American entertainer in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. His long career mirrored changes in American entertainment tastes and technology. His career began in the age of minstrel shows and moved to vaudeville, Broadway theatre, the recording industry, Hollywood films, radio, and television. Bill Robinson taught Sammy Davis Jr. tap dancing. - BG

Thank you very much for keeping the spirit of Sammy alive. He is the GOAT entertainer. I truly believe he was the first one named act there was. Before Elvis, Cher, Madonna, etc. there was Sammy. A lot of people don't realize the original Rat Pack was linked to Humphrey Bogart and his friends of the time but, eventually Frank took it over. Frank probably brought Sammy in to keep his own career going. Just kidding on that. Frank met Sammy when he was younger with the Will Mastin Trio featuring Sammy. People want to say that Frank was responsible for Sammy's success but, the Will Mastin Trio was pulling in about 5K per week in Vegas in the 50's before Sammy became part of the Rat Pack. Albeit once Sammy did Oceans 11 his career did really take off on his own without the trio. However, Sammy's loyalty to his father and uncle lasted to the end of their days. I am fortunate enough to be a Golden Key holder to Sammy's gravesite because of my family relationship.

There was still segregation so when they would perform at clubs, etc Frank Sinatra was like no, he (Sammy) comes through the front door like the rest of us. And who was going to tell Frank Sinatra no? No one lol. That entire group was amazing. They even made Shirley McLaine an honorary Rat Pack member lol.
