Stan Walker said in a statement to Variety, “‘I Am’ is my response to the film. It is about the reclamation, reconciliation and reconnection to our identity and the origins of who we are and where we come from. By knowing who we are we are then able to know where we are going. He wrote this in just 2 weeks and 3 days filming from his part of NZ where his ancestors lived. In interviews he talks about not just cultures but of humanity as a whole. I hear God's message in this song too. How we have turned our backs on seeing others as their own brothers and sisters... Stan was recently in your neck of the woods, early December 2023, for preview screenings of the movie in LA & NYC on the 8th Dec 2023 to help promote the movie this song was written for "Origin" before opening for general release in the US on the 19th Jan 2024. There seems to be plenty of media feedback that this song could make the Oscar nominee shortlist for Best Original Song. As you can probably tell us Kiwi's are pretty excited and proud Stan has chosen to take on the responsibility as a role model of sharing a little bit of our (Maori) Culture with the rest of the world. We are glad to see he is finally getting the recognition he deserves. Thanks for the kind words and support you have shown towards our Stan. Great reaction Matt.

The beaty of the Māori language is it interpreted by the listener. For me it translates to something like this. He toiora ahau nō te koingo Kurawaka, taku rongomaiwhiti e... i am a survivor, the protection from evil who comes from Kurawaka (the sacred soil from which the first women was made), my sacred beginning. Ka ki ko te haeata anga atu ki te rāwhiti whiti ki te ora e... it is said that the dawn stretches from the east shinning the light of life. This is just how i interrupted it.
