Yep. Me too. I have thought about this after watching some of these reaction vids... I have come to the conclusion that they’re 2 or 3 generations removed from the music I love. I damned sure didn’t listen to my grandparents music when I was young so I suppose it’s not as surprising as I first thought. The good news is that some of these guys are discovering what great music is all about. They just need some background history on the culture, counter-culture, Vietnam war, politics and all the other events that culminated into the music scene of the times. Seems it’s almost a crime to listen to some of these songs without knowing where they came from and how the musicians and bands ebbed, flowed and evolved....

I can not believe its been 51 years when this song first came out back in 1969. I was a 15 year old sophomore in high school in 1969. Today I am a 66 year old grandfather digging the reactions of todays youth experiencing the great music of the past. 1969 was one hell of a year. It was the year that ended the virulent and turbulent 60's decade. It was the year the united states landed a man on the moon. It was the year that brought about the greatest outdoor festival in history... Woodstock. A festival that help launch so many great bands. And it was the year we saw the anti-establishment movie "Easy Rider" with Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and the great Jack Nicolson. This is the iconic song that the movie opens with. It has become the bikers and freedom loving peoples national anthem. Great song choice and reaction.

Mr54nomore, I was a senior in high school. Those days for young people were truly “the best of times, and the worst of times” for our generation! Whenever I think about the changes I have seen in my life, from school “nuclear attack” drills, where we were taught to hide under our wooden desks for protection from a damn atomic bomb, to watching men walk around on the moon like that was a normal occurrence, we have seen some history! From watching John Lewis and Dr King on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, to watching the inauguration of President Obama, we have watched history unfold, before our eyes! We are the “generation of history”!
@Mr54nomore
@Mr54nomore 4 жыл бұрын
@@mamadat3621 I couldn't' agree with you more. Our baby boom generation protested everything under the sun back in the 60's. We were the generation that questioned anything and everything the government was doing, and the crony capitalist who were given sweet heart deals, and huge tax breaks by the government. 'We Stood For Something!'. We fought for the civil rights of black Americans during the segregated times of the south. And walked with King 'On his march on Washington.' I was fortunate to have grown up with a generation that truly gave a damn about all people...Stay safe Karen. Thanks for your enlighten and thoughtful comment.

The lead singer is still alive today living in Tennesse and actually is one he'll of a song writer! He was very political and had his act together even back then! He is really an East German that escaped from the Iron Curtain of the Communist Russia with his mother. His father was killed in action! This was back in 1945! He loved the blues he heard from USA on the radio..... you can look up his story as he tells it! Quite remarkable! His name is really Joakim Fritz Kraladat; forgive me for spelling it wrong!

I would have to say for mellow Steppenwolf listen to For Ladies Only and Tenderness. Tenderness showed the side of being a 1% er that people don't talk about much . How that hardcore life can destroy a relationship that could have lasted and how a man finally had to come to terms with his choices. I'm an old woman now but that song still holds a lot of memories and unrealized dreams for me. The beauty of it is that it shows that beyond all that brothers first way of thinking a man can still think for himself .

"Heavy Metal" as a genre got it's name from a line in this song. The reference was actually to the sound of a motorcycle, but was picked up to define the ear-bleed music that was beginning to come along at the same time. This was known as 'hard rock', but it comes close to being heavy metal itself. I hate to admit it, but I was a Junior in High School when I first heard it.

I remember playing this 45 over and over, singing into hairbrushes. We wore it out.. Someone's comment below reminded me of The Grass Roots. They had a lot of hits: Let's Live for Today, Midnight Confessions, Sooner or Later, Temptation Eyes. Haven't seen any reactions to them. Might want to add them to your list, I think you'll enjoy their music.

This is one song I cannot pinpoint a particular memory. All throughout my life, I heard this song many places, whether I'd be driving down the highway, watching a movie, or hanging out in a pool parlor. It was unavoidable to not have heard but it is some GREAT Rock and Roll!

I find it incredible that there are young people that have not heard these songs. My kids were raised on this kind of music. I made sure I drove them crazy with it.

Everytime you start to appreciate what it was like for us to grow up in the 60s and 70s, you react to a new band and get blown away even more. AND, there are still more new bands that will continue to blow you away. Our teenage life was one moment like this after another. Thank you for reminding me how awesome my youth was.

Man this song brings back memories. My parents, my brother, and I all crammed into the cab of my Dad's '84 Dodge Ram 3/4 ton pick-up with a camper on the back, and we're cruising down the open highway, and it's somewhere hot and dusty, and the thing doesn't have AC so we just crank the windows open and turn the music up, and the floorboards would get really hot so we'd prop our feet up on the dash-board, and our skin would be sticking to fake sheep-skin seat-cover on the bench-seat because we were sweating so much... but then this song would come on and my brother and I would sing it at the top of our lungs. I really liked your reaction, and I would recommend "Magic Carpet Ride" by them, but I'm a bit late catching up on your stuff and see you've already listened to it, so I'm off to watch that one next. *LOL*

LOL... Where has this band been all my life? This song was released in June of 1968. I was 14 and loving all the great music that was being pumped out. I had no idea that for the next 10 years rock would go from a toddler, just starting to walk, to a teen with raging hormones. Man, those were some awesome years for music.

One of the more underrated bands of the 60s. Check out "Tighten Up Your Wig", "28", "Move Over", "Rock Me", "Earschplittenloudenboomer", "Hippo Stomp", "Faster Than the Speed of Life", and the b-side medley from their second album ("Disappointment Number (Unknown)", "Lost and Found by Trial and Error", "Hodge, Podge, Strained Through a Leslie", and "Resurrection") -- they're all meant to be listened to as one continuous song.

First concert I ever went to in Dallas, Texas. Jerry Reed opened for them and played Polk Salad Anny. From my old crusty memory the concert was in a movie theater on Elm Street.
