This one and Mary Jane's last dance are my favorite Tom Pretty songs. He was a man of integrity and a good friend in spite of his own problems. In an interview Stevie Nicks said when she felt like she was at her lowest in rehab, she asked him to write her a number 1 hit. He hugged her and told her no. He said " You have the power to recreate yourself and be successful again. She went on to write Landslide after that. Good friends oftentimes know you better than you know yourself.

Tom was always hesitant to write songs for her. He wrote Insider for her and then couldn't let her have it. Stevie Nicks was very good friends with Tom and his first wife Jane. Jane like Tom was from Gainesville and she had a pretty pronounced Floridian southern accent. Stevie was shootin' the breeze with Jane one day and the subject of how time flies. Jane said I know, when I met Tom I was at the age of seventeen. Well due to her accent Stevie heard it as "The EDGE of seventeen". They had a good laugh about it but the words "The edge of seventeen" just kept rolling around in Stevie's head. That's where the song "The edge of seventeen" came from.

I have to second Stevie's duet with Kenny Loggins, "Whenever I Call You Friend." A classic from 1978.

I'm old enough to remember MTV playing the hell out of this video. Even as a kid I really liked how they sounded together, and have been a lifelong fan of both because of this song.

Two such unique and iconic voices that melded perfectly. Stevie and Tom also had such a great long lasting friendship. Well worth checking out their lesser known duets - “I Will Run to You”, which is just a total vibe, and the beautiful ballad “Insider”.

Tom wrote this song, but let Stevie release it because he knew her voice would really sell it.

One of the best duets. Their voices blended perfectly and he was a great musician as well. This is a song that is often overlooked but a true 💎.

Stevie ask Tom twice if she could join the Heartbreakers. She was willing to leave Fleetwood Mac to join him and the band. But Tom just told her "there are No girls in the Heartbreakers " also she had been bugging Tom to write a song for a while. Every time he had one he'd change his mind and keep for himself. That's why this one ended up a duet. He just couldn't let go.

Tom Petty is my all. I used to anticipate his videos, they were so creative, stylized, epic. But his MUSIC! One of the greatest rock and roll songwriters of all time, no joke. Listen to Refugee, Breakdown, Don't Come Around Here No More, oh...just anything!

I remember when this song came out and it pretty much overshadowed the album that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released. Hard Promises has another Stevie and Tom duet Insider on it plus A Woman in Love (It's not Me), The Waiting, and Letting You Go. Please react to more Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers especially A Woman in Love.

Some info you probably don't know ... After Stevie left Fleetwood Mac she want to join the band and kept bugging Tom to become one of the Heartbreakers. He said no, but gave this song, which he wrote, to Stevie for her first solo album.

Stevie was born in my hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. I'm not sure where she lives now, but she lived in the Phoenix suburb of Paradise Valley until 2007. She's arguably the most famous musician ever to come from Arizona.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Fleetwood Mac at an outdoor concert on a beautiful summer evening on the 5th row from the stage!! She was magical to hear & watch & I was blown away by the whole experience! I took my daughter and we drank wine & danced & sang & cried, it is one of my favorite memories in spent with my daughter!! Love Tom Petty too! Super unusual & unique voice, lyrics are always amazing also! Two greats in this duet for sure! ♥️The old white woman

They were good friends. She wrote a song titled "That Made Me Stronger", which was about her asking Tom to help her write. In the song's lyrics, he said, "No, you write your songs yourself." PLEASE listen to "Insider" - their voices are incredible together and it's such a heartbreaking and beautiful song.
