@12:00 when SRV does that short upstroke. That is a sign of ultimate respect from one guitar player to another. SRV had nothing but respect for the guys who came before him. Johnny being a Texas Blues guy, had no doubt been in SRV's ears from the jump.

Gents, it was Stevie's first appearance at the Montreaux Jazz Festival (in 1982) when there were some boos from the audience. Stevie wasn't really known internationally & was just starting to be known here in the U.S. outside of Texas. By this performance you just watched he was very well known with a big following. No more boos. I agree with others that you should do "Mary Had A Little Lamb" Austin City Limits 1989 & also "Life Without You" from the Capitol Theater. And "Riviera Paradise" Austin City Limits 1989 is an instrumental Stevie wrote after rehab, clean & sober. This particular performance has been known to make grown men cry. After he sings, ‘Lord nobody run-‘ listen to what Stevie DOES with just one chord. Virtuoso. That guitar was his soul, his feelings, his inner self being expressed. Open channel. GOAT.

Johnny Copeland maybe the only guy playing a Peavey T60 ever recorded. I caught a concert where Johnny opened up for Stevie. He brought Johnny back out for the encore, and they played T for Texas. Stevie had total respect for those that came before him, he was the real deal.

Two greats on the same stage. How could one go wrong? This is one of the finest examples of pure raw natural talent. Johnny left us due to complications from a heart transplant at age 60.

I've seen this performance 100+ times and still blows me away. The dichotomy between these two works so well. Fast in your face with Stevie and smooth melodic from Johnny is a match made in heaven.

Stevie Ray is about the only guitarist who can be thought of on the same level as Jimi Hendrix. Mr. Copeland certainly has the blues!!!

This is a perfect example of how much better Stevie was than everyone else, Copeland was a very good bluesman. They were boo'd in '82 at Montreux. He was more welcome and celebrated in '85

Reason they were laughing at the end is because Johnny forgot his place, words so he improvised. WHEN he walked to the mic but didn't sing he just played the guitar, SRV comes up and turns laughs that's when Johnny had lost his place.

The reason they was laughing at the end of the song was because Johnny was supposed to sing the last verse and he forgot the words so Stevie finished it.

Texas Blues !!!

Tommy and Cris told of a time they were playing a concert at Red Rocks. When they arrived B.B.King was onstage playing. Stevie asked what was B.B. doing out there. He was told B.B. was opening for him. Stevie was very upset and said never again. It wasn't right to him. After that if they played they would alternate. Stevie was the epitome of humility and respect.

If you want an original, written by Stevie, either 'Life Without You' from Capital Theater, or an instrumental 'Riviera Paradise' from Austin 1989. The latter was written after his rehab for addiction. He dedicates it to those still suffering. It has a very jazzy tone.

Thanks, guys - the trade-off between Stevie and Johnny is amazing.. there's no way to say who did it "best" - they were such a collaboration... Johnny has a bit of a BB King vibe, but SRV has the "grit" - look forward to more...

Just FYI it was the 1982 performance that they did at the Montreux Switzerland jazz festival where they were booed. They were the first unsigned band ever to play the festival and they were booked on a night that was supposed to be acoustic music. Of course, they came out highly amplified, and there were some purist, in the audience who did boo them rather loudly. It can be heard when you listen to the concert. However, there were many in the audience who did clap and cheer, and even stand up and dance. It was at this concert that David Bowie first saw Stevie Ray and also this is when they met Jackson Browne who was instrumental in helping them get Texas Flood, their first album recorded. After spending a night jamming with them he offered them free studio time at his personal studio to record. Great guy Jackson Browne. As a thank you, they sent Jackson Browne a two year old horse. What a Texas thing to do!

Blues is a totally underrated music genre ... there are so many legends out there! And almost everything we hear today is based or influenced by the blues musician from the very earls years of the blues (20/30/40) ... It's always worth to check out some (old) blues - you can't go wrong with it! :)

During an interview (maybe it was with Arsinio Hall), Stevie was asked where his style comes from. "Truckstops, mostly." XD The absolute best.

Reese Wynans played when Duane Allman and Dickie Betts formed the Allman Brothers Band. Duane eased him out in favor of his little brother Gregg. With Stevie Ray Vaughan, a 5-minute song is just too short. The Capital Theater concert that is widely available on KZfaq is one of the better choices for seeing Stevie at his best. The Austin City Limits show is another. Many have requested "Life Without You" and I would agree since this song had a special meaning to Stevie. It is also long enough to really appreciate the talent the man had. I love "Ain't Gone 'n Give Up On Love." The Blues influence is evident, and Stevie's unique talent is displayed in a relatively short time span. When you get a chance, watch the show with Stevie and Albert King called "Blues At Sunrise." It's long. But we'll worth the watch to get a real enjoyable taste of real Blues is like. The exchanges between these two friends is so enjoyable that the time still seems to short.

I'm sure someone already mentioned this, but at the part where you say they're just jamming, Johnny Copeland had forgotten the lyrics and was filling in with the guitar solo. So Stevie came up and finished the song, and then they had a good laugh about it! I enjoyed the review, but your breaks interrupted the flow of the song and the dark feeling it creates about life in Tin Pan Alley.
