SRV was humble. He said Jimi Hendrix was the best and gave praise to all the Blues players before him. Did this cover of Jimi Hendrix out of respect. Note, Jimi was left handed and strung a right handed guitar upside down to play.

In my opinion, SRV became a better guitar player than Jimi. No small feat. Because SRV had something Jimi didn't have. 10 more years.

It was said Albert King, who helped SRV and Jimi both along their ways played lefty on upside down strings first and it gave him a different sound. Jimi adopted the style and SRV found ways to recreate it right handed. Check out Albert King's original versions of Red House(Jimi covered it) and Born Under A Bad Sign(SRV covered it)!

The "Wah-Wah" pedal gives it that distinctive sound. Hendrix and Clapton used Wah Wah pedals in the 1960's. Stevie is actually using the actual Wah Wah pedal that Jimi Hendrix used - the Hendrix estate had given it to Stevie because he honored Jimi so passionately.

I saw Hendrix live 3 months before he died. Stood right in front of him taking photos as he played. At the end of the encore he reached down to give me his guitar pick but a big burly guy jostled me aside & grabbed it instead (still makes me mad!). "Voodoo Chile" was my favorite of his songs so I loved seeing him play it in person. Jump ahead to 1983 when Stevie Ray's 1st album came out. I was instantly a fan. When I listened to his version of VC (on his 2nd album) it took a couple of times before I could admit to myself that I actually liked it better. Seemed like sacrilege but there it was. Then I got to know more about Stevie..how much he loved Hendrix & how he even went to see Jimi's father for his permission to record it. And I think Jimi himself would love Stevie's playing. They were both masters & I hope they're occasionally jamming together on the other side. There's even a song that envisions that..Stevie's brother Jimmie (also a great guitarist) sings it. It's about Stevie's death & a couple of lines say "See the Voodoo Child, holding out his hand..'been waiting for you, brother. Welcome to the band'". Talk about goosebumps. Thank you for doing this one! There were no showy "tricks" in it, just soaring, blistering playing. I agree with others, you should add "Life Without You" at the Capitol Theater to your list. He wrote it for a friend who died. Beautiful, emotional song, great message. And a couple of those tricks are included in a fantastic performance.💙🌿💚

Nice! So, you saw Jimi in June 70? What show did you go to? I may have an audience recording of it. Jimi played some great shows in June 70. Are your photos available on the internet anywhere? As my name indicates, I am big Jimi collector/archivist and would love to see them, but understand if they are special and you'd rather keep them to your self for your own memories Deborah. Alternatively I could put you in touch with some heavy collectors who may even be interested purchasing them from you. Just wanted to let you know about that. Main thing is, I'd love to know what show you saw Jimi as it is always great to meet people who saw him live. If indeed I have a recording of the show you were at will gladly get it to you.

He didn't drop his pick. Electric guitarists play with a number of effect peddles. EQ, wah-wah, fuzz, distortion, overdrive, etc, etc. They have a little pedal you can step on to click, but he was likely leaning down to adjust a knob on one of them. Also, that first effect you talked about where it looked like he was playing with no hands, that was a peddle he was using. In answer to your question though, yes, you can play with just the hand on the neck. Btw, if you want a shockingly different side of Stevie, take a listen to 'Riviera Paradise' from that same concert.

a lot of people think effects "lessen the art" and for people who "dont have the chops". Its the exact opposite. the greatest modern guitarist use everything they can master to get the exact sound they want. adjusting knobs, popping switch pedals, using compression pedals and more. you have to be a great musician to do that and never plat it the same. chris leighton said they never even had a set list except touring with jeff beck because his crew made them. double trouble made damn sure to fill in everything he didnt and he trusted them. that band is staggering.

It was released after his death. It's acoustic. Was written by his friend Doyle Bramhall about Stevie leaving him behind and coming to terms with it. I think it says more about his brother, Jimmie Vaughan, who had to put together the Sky is Crying album after Stevie died. I think it is last track. I cannot listen to that song without weeping no matter how many times I hear it. Doyle is dead now. Remembered as a songwriter more than a musician, but Doyle Bramhall II plays with Clapton and Gary Clark, Jr, John Mayer, etc regularly. Great recommendation!

BB said he never thought a guitar player could take it so far over the blistering edge then pull it back with improvisational wizardry the way Stevie could. Fun fact: his wah-pedal (which he bends to adjust a couple of times here, not to retrieve a pick) was given to him by Jimi Hendrix's family. Please do check out all the other suggestions in the comments, paying attention to which concert it is, because on stage he purposefully never played anything quite the same way twice, so each version is unique in some way. Edit: Btw you should also check out his Tin Pan Alley live with Johnny Copeland!

How he plays the guitar without using his hands is by stepping on a pedal known as a "Wa-Wa" pedal...and the pedal Stevie used is the same one that Jimi Hendrix used on stage...Jimi's family gave it to Stevie cuz they knew how much he idolized Jimi...that pedal is now in a Texas museum along with that guitar he's playin...

Being from Texas I've seen Stevie Ray Vaughn in concert several times. What can I say about that is Amazing guitarist. Every show was incredible. If you like this version check out Gary Moore's version live. Gary version has more of a Rock groove where Stevie's is rooted in the Blues. Both are great. You want be disappointed.

I love your reactions, would like to see how you like Santana started in 1966 and still going pick any song but maybe start with Black magic woman and go from there!

Voodoo Chile is one of my favorite Jimi songs. You should check out Prince's song *Dreamer* from the Lotus Flower album. Undeniable how much he was influenced by Voodoo Chile.

Try some early ZZTop. A Fool for Your Stockings is great blues tune. Billy Gibbons is another great Texas guitarist.

There are three rules regarding guitars: 1. Don't try to play Stairway to Heaven in a store, 2. Don't interrupt a guitar solo in a reaction video or otherwise, 3. If it ain't your guitar, ask before you even think about touching it! Period. End of story. Mic drop.

You need to hear "Riviera Paradise" for a change of pace from SRV.

No shame in calling SRV the guitar GOAT - he was younger when he started than Jimi was and he lived longer.

FYI Prince's name should NOT be mentioned when discussing great guitarists. SRV IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. Mark Knopfler is the second greatest after SRV.
