He is so awesome, isn’t he? Stranger is one of my absolute favorite songs. I get goosebumps every time I hear it. I’m a real fan of movies that have such a mystical or oriental atmosphere. And it was such a great idea by Dimash to use the Kobysz for that. The kobyz is a very old two stringed Kazakh folk instrument and it’s wide spread among Kazakhs. The man who often is playing the kobyz in Dimash’s performance (also here in Stranger) is the best on this instrument and a good friend of Dimash. His name is Olzhas Qurmanbek. You often can hear this instrument when Dimash sings in his native tongue like Samaltau, Qairan Elim or Òmir Òter. He sang Stranger for the first time at New Wave in Sochi, Russia in 2021. This is an international competition for young artists, founded in 2002 by Igor Krutoy. Dimash sang here as a guest and was also a member of the jury. Igor Krutoy, like so many other masterpieces, wrote this song specifically for Dimash and his incredible vocal range (in this song alone he sings 5 octaves F1-F6 I think). And the last note he held for 20 seconds. The way he switchs so affortlessly between the different registers and octaves in one song is so mesmerizing and unbelievable. Igor Krutoy is a famous Russian-Ukrainian composer, producer and songwriter. He came out of retirement specifically to work with Dimash when he first heard him. True masterpieces were created. The music of ancient cultures often used chants, overtone singing, and melismatic techniques to induce a hypnotic trance in the listener. Dimash is not only aware of the power of music to alter one’s state of consciousness, he wields this power masterfully, but always with great respect. His friend since his teenage years, Erlan Bekchurin, is a brilliant arranger and knows exactly what Dimash wants to accomplish. Together they create magic. Dimash insisted on the use of the kobyz, an instrument which was used in Kazakh shamanism to communicate with spirits, and it fits beautifully. The best Kobyz player in the world, Dimash’s friend Olzhas Qurmanbeck, performs masterfully as always.

The instrument is a Kobyz one of the most ancient string instruments which is able to produce animal sounds and was considered sacred and able to banish illness and even death. It's made of wood and two strings of horse hair. Whenever he could Dimash is incorporating his heritage and culture in his performances and songs. His Kazakh songs are always special as you can feel how deeply he is rooted in his culture and how proud he is to introduce it to the world.

The instrument with the remarkable sound is a Qobyz, a folk instrument of Kazakhstan, and it is regarded as the ancestor of all modern string instruments. It is incredible hard to play, and Olzhas Qurmanbek is a master at it. They are prominently featured at the studio version of Samaltau for the Tokyo Jazz Festival 2020, and in the beautiful music video Qairan Elim, both performed in Dimash's native language Kazakh. Great reaction. I've been following Dimash since 2017 on The Singer. I'm still left speechless with his performances. And the thing is, he's getting better with each outing !! Glad you are enjoying Dimash! If you want to hear some more of that marvellous kobyz, try "Samaltau" either the Tokyo Jazz Festival version or the Digital Show version. It's a song about a young man who was forced to join the army (in WW1 I think) and to leave his home and aging parents. They should both have English subtitles.🇨🇦
