Kirk has ultimate power to put any song on my list (within reason), and for our anniversary he decided to teach me about Styx. "Lady" is one of the first power ballads ever written, and its message was so touching I nearly broke down crying here. Also, Dennis DeYoung's vocals are AMAZING!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Styx for the first time, performing "Lady”.

I wrote the words to this song on a card in 1973 to a girl who I met at work.. I was 20 and she was 19. I told her that I was going to marry her, and that scared the crap out of her… This year, we’ll be celebrating our 47th anniversary…. Love You Dear.

You are a one in a million couple. I should have done the same with a girl I met when I was 16. I did not. I thought I was not good enough. Only to find out years later after we both messed up our lives that she was waiting just for me to do exactly something like that. I am 66 now. One waisted life to go into the big book.

Dennis and I were friends living on the same block in Chicago, I went to grade school with him for eight years and then I moved away after my mother passed away when I was 14. Once I stopped by his house in 1972 to have a beer and just catch up on his life. The next thing that happen was Dennis singing a new song that he just wrote for his wife. I was one of the first to hear LADY. To this day we are still friends after all.

Dennis De Young and his wife Suzanne comprise one of the greatest love stories in Show Biz. They were high school sweethearts who married in 1970. De Young wrote two songs for Suzanne that became big hits... this song and "Babe" in 1979. The latter was never meant to be put out to the public, but he wrote it and had his band mates perform it with him for Suzanne's birthday. Record execs heard it and strongly urged Styx to put it on their upcoming album, correctly anticipating that it would be a big hit. The two, well into their 70s, are still married today, after 53 years together.

Not only have Dennis and Suzanne been married for 53 years…but they wed in January, in CHICAGO. If that's not love, what is? (Them Chicago winters are harsh. But they were too in love to wait for the summer. Either that, or Dennis wanted to make sure he got that draft deferment lined up in case the Army wanted to send him to Viet Nam. But I prefer the romantic version.)

Well, as a lifelong Styx fan and Racine resident, I don't recall them playing in town in 1972. They played Memorial Hall downtown sometime in the summer of '75, paid like $4 to get in! What school do you think they played, Park, Horlick or Case?

Their vocal harmonies when they sang live blew away the competition, especially because they have 3 lead singers and songwriters. Happy Anniversary! My wife and I made our honeymoon allow time for us to see the Styx 1996 Return to Paradise Theater concert. Dennis DeYoung is not just an unbelievable singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and concert MC, he is a genuinely good human. When my wife and I were raising money for our local mental health association that served my late brother, Dennis sent us a ton of signed stuff for an auction. We took our autistic daughter to see him when she was three years old. She stims on Mr. Roboto and Show Me The Way repeatedly. Dennis was the reason I played keyboards in a rock band for the first time, because I could play The Best of Times on piano and the synthesizer parts to Suite Madame Blue. You are entering the rabbit hole of some unbelievable music. Happy Anniversary!

I didn't know one could be classically trained to play accordion.

I can't find an exact quote but I know he's described himself as "an accordion player who just happens to play piano now", or something to that effect.

I've heard this song many times. I grew up in this generation but somehow I never heard this piano intro and it was awesome. I've always loved this song I love his voice and also the way this song builds You talk about transition to me it's just building. It has always been a very energizing nice song anytime I hear it I turn up the volume. Thank you 😊

Being from Chicago, Styx was always a favorite. Even into his late 60's and early 70's Dennis DeYoung's voice was still incredible. Got to see him several times in the mid 2010's. Sounded just like he did in the 1970's. His ability to hold notes perfectly on pitch was amazing.

Styx had 3 amazing singers and so many great vocal songs. Crystal Ball and Suite Madame Blue would be personal faves.

Yeah... they're like the Cars; two great but different singers. But....Crystal Ball and Too Much Time On My Hands swing my preference to Tommy.

Suite Madame Blue is their opus. Come Sail Away is medicinal for the soul. You can't keep your eyes open while listening to it. It is otherworldly and beyond the present moment.

@@Mr1Tanker ‘Too Much Time On My Hands’ great song Tommy is superb. The only song I ever covered by them was ‘Miss America’, but always wanted to do ‘Too Much Time…’

Lady, I mean You!!! You will love everything about this! Dennis DeYoung!!! What is interesting is that he is putting much more into this than the versions we hear on the radio. The piano is exquisite... then it gets into the regular... the big shift. You are correct. I haven't heard this live before. 5 months after your reaction, dammit! I need to keep up with you more!!!! ❤

happy anniv six months ago! U r the best, and have opened my mind/brain to both music and art therefore, in ways i'd never known, even though at midlife and kinda did pay attention to art since i was quite young around 13.

It’s wonderful to see and hear a ‘classically trained’ singer appreciating so many genres of music and vocal styles. Good music, and music that speaks to one’s heart and soul, is priceless and essential to the human experience.

Styx is one talent packed band. Dennis De Young's voice is unmistakable. Guitarist Tommy Shaw also shared lead vocal duties on plenty of songs. Although he sang many of the bangers, he could do the ballads as well. Crystal Ball is a classic.

I must say that I absolutely love watching you react to the great older rock acts! Styx, Boston, etc. I must say, your insights into the vocal shapes interest me. I'm a fan 😉😎

These bands, and this music from the '70's are just superior in so many ways. Great decade for music.
