This song is an old blues song that was originally recorded by Lead Belly in the early 1930's. The house of the Rising Sun was a brothel in New Orleans. When the Animals came to America on tour, they were looking for an American song to sing and came across this one and created magic with it.

Boy, ain't that so!! There was NO nostalgic "oldies" back then. The amount of incredible music and artists that came out every single week, week in and week out, year after year, during that time, boggles the mind. Lordy! We had no idea that we were in the midst of a phenomenon. We just thought that was the way life goes - a never ending stream of amazing music! I remember hearing the "oldies" radio station for the first time back in the late 70's. I thought it was just the weirdest thing to be playing music from my high school years. GREAT time to be young! And now we get to enjoy young people discovering what we have known all along - how GREAT is this!!!

His voice is that of a weathered, experienced older man. A tortured man who's seen a lot of life. And it contrasts his young, fresh faced look. It always threw people off to see him sing in person. *The Animals were the kind of band who'd beat up the Beatles and take their allowances.

The reason they are walking, is the funeral procession, like the old ones in New Orleans. The FUNERAL IS HIS, he is going back to the brothels, and alcohol addiction (ball and chain) like his father did. His somber look through the video is because he is dead inside, he has 1 foot on the platform and the other on the train. He isn't coming back.

Monterey is one of their best songs. It's all about the Monterey Pop Festival which happened before Woodstock and was a precursor to the biggest rock concert of all time. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood is also great. For a while there the big three were the Beatles, the Stones and the Animals. They ruled the world from the mid to the late sixties. Awesome stuff.

@johnlamere2189
@johnlamere2189 2 жыл бұрын
An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song in a club in Newcastle, England, where it was sung by the Northumbrian folk singer Johnny Handle. The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose it because they wanted something distinctive to sing. The Animals had begun featuring their arrangement of "The House of the Rising Sun" during a joint concert tour with Chuck Berry, using it as their closing number to differentiate themselves from acts that always closed with straight rockers. It got a tremendous reaction from the audience, convincing initially reluctant producer Mickie Most that it had hit potential, and between tour stops the group went to a small recording studio on Kingsway in London to capture it. The song was recorded in just one take on May 18th, 1964 it took 15 minutes to record. "House of the Rising Sun" was a trans-Atlantic hit: after reaching the top of the UK pop singles chart in July 1964, it topped the US pop singles chart two months later, on September 5, 1964, where it stayed for three weeks. Many cite this as the first true classic rock song, and became the first British Invasion number one hit that was not connected with the Beatles.
