Eleanor Rigby and Father McKenzie are just characters McCartney made up for the song. It’s about lonely people - imagining what their lives are like. Way ahead of its time. It’s from their Revolver album (1966) but was also featured in their Yellow Submarine animated film.

Hi! I'm sure, you know there's a grave in Liverpool with a lady named "Eleanor Rigby". He and Lennon occasionally spent time at this cemetery. McCartney also thinks it's possible, that he walked by and memorized the name. The other version is, that "Eleanor" is from actress Eleanor Bron from "Help" and "Rigby" from a store in Bristol. One can probably roll the dice, which is ultimately correct...

@@braudabo Hi. Yes, but the characters were made up (he doesn’t care how McCartney came up with the names lol)

This was originally off of the Revolver album, written by Paul, and it was re-released on the Yellow Submarine album since it was featured in the animated movie.

Yellow Submarine is an .animated film of the Beatles from 1968-has many Beatles songs and a psychedelic story of The Beatles battling the Blue Meanies. Elenaor Rigby-the song- was at the beginning of the film as the Beatles sail to Pepperland-a very trippy movie but fun to watch.

While John wrote more autobiographical songs, about how he saw things and how he was feeling, Paul wrote stories with characters he's created himself. Like a novelist who has characters they build a story around. More simply, John wrote from a more internal perspective, while Paul wrote from an external perspective, other people's lives, not his own. I know there's a lot of talk about there being a headstone with the name "Eleanor Rigby" in a cemetery Paul and John walked through, but Paul didn't know anything about this woman's life. The story itself, was about loneliness and incorporates a parallel reality for both these characters. The irony is that both characters are in the other's orbit, but they never connect as people. Instead, living their own empty lives.

The Yellow Submarine was in the clip because the clip was from the Yellow Submarine movie. The song came out over 2 years before the movie did.

Dude! This is literally the first vinyl that I ever bought! I bought it for a penny all scratched up and without the original sleep across the street at a yard sale, because Yellow Submarine was on the a side and we all knew that from TV and the radio and we sang it on the playground. And I had never heard Eleanor Rigby and I flipped it over and played it and it was so scratchy and all warned that it was so hard to even hear everything. But it got me in the very first verse when he has that line about wearing a face that she keeps in a jar by the door, that freak me out big-time at that young age. And then Paul McCartney with those incredible string arrangements and he also wrote the music to the versus while George Harrison actually wrote the music to the chorus which is so achingly sad and beautiful, and then in the final verse, Eleanor Rigby dies and is buried at the church and nobody comes. Father Mackenzie says a few words and that's it. It's done. She was lonely her whole life and she died lonely. John Lennon wrote the words to this one with Just a Little Help from the others and I can't tell you how much it blew me away at that young age. It's still almost gives me the creeps today.

When the Beatles first hit North America, most of our parents thought their music was just "noise", and predicted they would be just another short-lived fad. This song, which was written by Paul McCartney, with its more traditional string instrumentation unlike rock and roll, and which was played heavily by radio stations, appealed to all generations, and that was the point when most non-teenagers realized that the Beatles were amazing songwriters and not just another teenage fad. Ray Charles did a cover version.

I just finished watching this and after my last comment how the different members of the band contributed to it, and John Lennon wrote this story, and so of course Eleanor Rigby and father Mackenzie are fictional characters in the story and they are both probably some of the most loneliest people on the planet you will ever meet and there is no Redemption at the end. They live alone Lea life and they die lonely. It was extremely dark for the time. But it just now occurred to me and I've never thought of this before, but even though John Lennon wrote the story and Paul McCartney wrote the verses and George Harrison wrote the chorus in terms of the music, yeah that was Paul McCartney who sing lead on it. How interesting. There is no connection at all to Yellow Submarine other than that it was on the Same album and Yellow Submarine was a huge hit initially and then like I said, Eleanor Rigby was side-b of the single. And it became a hit in its own right later on. I still love this song so much it is so powerful and emotional to make. Then again I got exposed to it in fourth grade, laugh.

I saw a comment that Eleanor Rigby was a character that McCartney made up. Not so, there actually is a tombstone stone in a Liverpool grave yard with her name on it. She's one of several names on the family's stone engraved on it. She is the last name on it and she passed at a young age I think around 28 yrs of age somewhere between 1884-88, I can't remember. When John and Paul were teenagers they would meet up and pass through the cemetery and Paul stated that on her epitaph it end with the word "Asleep". Paul stated that for some odd reason John took great comfort in that. He would tell Paul "Get it, she's asleep" I don't know why but in the last several years Paul's been putting out this narrative that Eleanor Rigby was a fictional character that he created. Why is he trying to rewrite history? That clip that you watched you will see the top of the gravestone and it says "Here Lies", that's it, that's an image if the stone. I've seen actual images of the stone, so yes, she was a real person. Father McKenzie is fictional, when Paul was writing the lyrics, he was with John one day and they came up initially with "Father McCartney" in honor of Paul's father. They liked word play like this with two possible scenarios. They knew Beatles fans would be all over this, scrutinizing and dissecting it with "What does this mean" crap. After a couple of hours John said that it was a little corny and Paul agreed and hence, Father McKenzie was born. A little constructive advice here. You might want to invest in a pair of decent headphones because The Beatles are a must headphones band, that's the proper way too listen to them. Put some phones on and listen to this one and I think it climb up your list a little. Having a favorite Beatles song is nearly impossible, too many great songs. You may have a favorite from month to month or something like that because that's a tough call. You haven't even scratched the surface in their catalog of songs. However, if one were to hold my feet over a fire and I had to choose one, it wouldn't be a Lennon/McCartney song but a George Harrison number, "Here Comes The Sun" such a great, positive, chill, feel good song. This is The Beatles #1 streamed song on Spotify with I've 700 million plays as of 2021. Ray Charles did a cover of Eleanor Rigby but didn't write it. Many artist covered Beatles songs and still do. As a matter of fact their song "Yesterday" is the most covered song in history with over 3,000 artist's and that's as of 2017. This song was on their "Help" Lp released in 1965 and written by McCartney. Ray Charles did a cover of this one to. Peace & Love

Are you trying to say that you know more about what McCartney's song is about than McCartney himself? He said he made up the name. End of story.

@@RadCenter That's exactly what I'm saying. So I imagined that photo I've seen of pictures of the tombstone. I've read McCartney words that John found comfort for some reason in the inscription "Asleep". I've seen the stone, it was a family stone and Eleanor was the last name on it. If you know Beatles history at all then you've probably seen the Anthology series. Paul, George and Ringo had whole different accounts about their memories on different events. They couldn't even agree on whether John wrote All You need Is Love for the worldwide satellite performance in 67 for that show or if had it around already and George Martin just looked at the camera and had nothing too say and these interviews were done back in 93 and they had different memories. When John was alive he was all over the place with recollections of events and songs. He claimed that " In My Life" was 90% his, Paul sees it differently, I think he's more in the 40, to 50% range. I might go 25% and that's maybe. They all had and the two now have different memories so then why would you believe everything out of Paul's mouth. I think he's much older now and time can be remembered differently. Here's a few more. Since Georges death every time Paul reminiscences about George its always "He was like my little brother too me, I'm two years older then George and George put that BS to rest way back on the Anthology when in his great George way he said no matter what Paul will always be eight months older than me" Hilarious, I love George, he never beat around the bush. He had enough of Paul's BS back in 1993. I just saw Paul in an interview a couple of weeks ago telling the story if bringing George into the band. "John, I have a school pal, he's quite young but he's really good" OK Paul, you're eight months older, not two or three years . The rest of his story was accurate about George auditioning for John on top of the double decker bus. Why is he still always pushing this narrative that he was so much older than George. Same reason he's putting out this narrative that Eleanor Rigby is a fictitious character. Like is stated in my comment, Father McKenzie is fictitious, that's accurate. His Eleanor fantasy he's living now is total BS. When was the last time you saw "Yellow Submarine"? You can go on u tube right now and punch in video for Eleanor Rigby from the movie and you'll see the submarine cruising over the top of the tombstone and you'll see, " Here Lies" that's all you see but that's it, that's an image of the stone. I can go on with more Paul delusional stories here but I'm done with this shit and I love Paul so I mean no disrespect to him. Now, if you want too live in Paul's current partial fantasy world, that's fine. I prefer too live in the factual world. I've been a Beatles fanatic since I saw them on The Ed Sullivan Show at the ripe old age of six and was fortunate enough too see them in concert in Pittsburgh that September. I had all of their LP's and singles growing up. If you saw my record collection your jaw would drop. "Yesterday And Today" Butcher Covers, 1state Stereo, Near Mint. 1st Mono NM. 2nd state Trunk Cover Paste Over Butcher Stereo. 2nd state Paste Over Mono. 3rd state peeled Butchers Mono and Stereo NM. The Beatles vs The Beach Boys Vee Jay label, NM. Eight variations of "Introducing The Beatles" Vee Jay NM. The Beatles And Frank Ifield On Stage. Stereo NM Vee Jay as rare as 1state Stereo Butcher. Every Capitol Lp mono and stereo NM. Every Apple Lp NM Every Beatles 45 rpm Capitol and VeeJay Picture Sleeve and records NM. Both Capitol Ep's with Picture Sleeves NM Capitol Juke Box EPs with juke box inserts and Picture Sleeve's NM. I think you get the picture here. I'm Beatles time all the time. You're gonna have a hard time finding someone who has read, researched and collected this band more than me. I started collecting their records in 1972 before people were collecting Beatles records and I was a 14 year old HS freshman. I have some memorabilia but never focused too much on that because it was always about the music for me. At 14 I had this feeling that these records were gonna be sought after someday and I don't know why that was. I think probably how big they were and this was gonna be history and as it turned out, I was right. Well Nancy , that's my story and my period for you. Long Live The Beatles Peace & Love and no hard feelings and we may have to just agree to disagree I guess.

True, there is a tombstone with Eleanor Rigby on it, but in England there are probably hundreds of them with that name on it. I believe Paul's story that Eleanor came from Eleanor Brom from Help! And Rigby from a shop.
