LOVED your reaction. Yeah, the lead had a unique, memorable voice! My parents loved the Platters and played their music (LPs) a LOT when we were kids. When I had my own kids, I kept up the tradition of playing the same LPs for them. The PLATTERS!! Try their "The Great Pretender" and "Twilight Time" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes."

No autocue, sharp and well dressed, respectable lyrics no cursing like todays lyrics. The falsetto and the harmonies are fantastic. Considering it was the time of segregation where colored groups had to come through the back entrance and not the main entrance. The man that introduced him is Alan Freed apparently he promoted colored music and had alot to do with the rise of Rock n Roll in its infancy

A classic reaction 🥂🍾! Only You (And You Alone) was released as a non-album single by The Platters in 1955. The song was latter included on The Platters' 1958 album: Only You. It was written and produced by Buck Ram. The song reached #1 on the R&B chart and #5 on the Hot 100. In the 1956 film: Rock Around The Clock, The Platters participated with two songs: "Only You (And You Alone)" and "The Great Pretender". That film is where this live performance was taken from. Tony Williams is the lead singer. The female, Zola Taylor, was portrayed by Halle Berry in the 1998 film: Why Do Fools Fall In Love, as one of Frankie Lymon's wives. The Platters first recorded the song for Federal Records on May 20, 1954, but the recording was not released as the record label didn't deem it as a releasable single. In 1955, after moving to Mercury Records, the band re-recorded the song in April and scored a major radio and music chart hit when it was released in May. In November that same year, Federal Records released the original recording as a non album single with the B-side: "You Made Me Cry", which sold poorly. The Platters bass singer Herb Reed later recalled how the group hit upon its successful version: "We tried it so many times, and it was terrible. One time we were rehearsing in the car... and the car jerked. Tony went 'O-oHHHH-nly you'. We laughed at first, but when he sang that song-that was the sign we had hit on something". According to Buck Ram, Tony Williams' voice "broke" in studio rehearsal, but they decided to keep this effect in the recording. This was the only Platters' recording on which songwriter and manager Buck Ram played the piano. The song is featured in the video games 🎮: Batman: Arkham City (2011) and Far Cry 5 (2018). The song has been featured in some TV shows-TV Movies including 📺: Family Matters (1990), Lipstick On Your Collar (1993), Derrick (1994), Shake, Rattle And Roll: An American Love Story (1999), Cold Case (2005), iZombie (2018) and more. The song has been featured in some films including 📽: Senior Year (2022), The Mole Agent (2020), Zero Focus (2009), The Wrecking Crew (2008), Hearts In Atlantis (2001), Ponterosa (2001), Dating The Enemy (1996), Mistah (1994), Oh What A Night (1992), Only You (1992), Mestari (1992), The Man In The Moon (1991), Mr Destiny (1990), The Delinquents (1989), The War Of The Roses (1989), Porky's (1981), Going Steady (1989), Superman (1978), American Graffiti (1973), Rock Around The Clock (1956) and more. The song has been covered by many artists including 📻: Diana Ross, John Lennon, Reba McEntire, The Hilltoppers, Luis Miguel, Ringo Starr, Franck Pourcel, Brenda Lee, Roy Orbison, Little Richard, Travis Tritt, Bobby Hatfield Victor Wood, Eddy Mitchell, Johnny Mathis, Ken Dodd, PJ Proby, Jerry Lee Lewis, Malcolm Vaughan, Johnny Dorelli, Carl Perkins, Anny Gould, The Letterman, Min Shaw, Dorothy Collins, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Bobby Vinton, Paul Anka, Wayne Newton, James Brown, Ray Conniff, Lola Dee, Gloria Jones and more. Legacy 🛡: In 1999, the group's 1955 recording of the song: "Only You (And You Alone)", was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Lyrics 🗒: Only you can make all this world seem right Only you can make the darkness bright Only you and you alone can thrill me like you do And fill my heart with love for only you Oh, only you can do make all this change in me For it's true, you are my destiny When you hold my hand I understand the magic that you do You're my dream come true, my one and only you Oh oh, only you can do make this change in me For it's true, you are my destiny When you hold my hand I understand the magic that you do You're my dream come true, my one and only you The Platters Info 📰: The Platters formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1952, and were initially managed by Federal Records A&R man Ralph Bass. The original group consisted of Herb Reed, Alex Hodge, Cornell Gunter and Joe Jefferson. Herb Reed named the group while sitting around a kitchen table with group members. He was inspired by the "turntable" of an old phonograph machine and the "platter" that spun the vinyl records. They are one of the most successful vocal groups of the early Rock and Roll era. Their distinctive sound bridges the pre-Rock Tin Pan Alley tradition and the new burgeoning genre. The act has gone through multiple line-ups over the years, earning it the branding tag "Many Voices One Name", with the most successful incarnation comprising lead tenor Tony Williams, David Lynch, Paul Robi, founder and naming member Herb Reed, and Zola Taylor. The group had 40 charting singles on the Hot 100 between 1955 and 1967, including four #1 Pop hits. In June 1953, Cornell Gunter left the group to join The Flairs and was replaced by lead vocalist Tony Williams. The band then released two singles with Federal Records, under the management of Ralph Bass, but found little success. Bass then asked his friend, music entrepreneur, and songwriter Buck Ram, to coach the group in the hope of getting a hit record. Buck Ram made some changes to the lineup, most notably the addition of female vocalist Zola Taylor and, in autumn 1954, the replacement of Alex Hodge by Paul Robi. Despite their lack of chart success, The Platters were a profitable touring group, successful enough that The Penguins, coming off their #8 Pop single: "Earth Angel", asked Buck Ram to manage them as well. With The Penguins in hand, Buck Ram was able to parlay Mercury Records' interest into a 2-for-1 deal. To sign The Penguins, Buck Ram insisted, Mercury Records also had to take The Platters. One song recorded during their Federal Records tenure: "Only You (And You Alone)", originally written by Buck Ram for The Ink Spots, was deemed unreleasable by the record label, though copies of this early song version do exist. Convinced by Jean Bennett and Tony Williams that the song had potential, Buck Ram had The Platters re-record the song during their first session for Mercury Records. Released in the summer of 1955, it became the group's first Top Ten hit on the Pop charts and topped the R&B charts for seven weeks. The follow-up single: "The Great Pretender", exceeded the success of their debut and became The Platters' first national #1 Pop hit. "The Great Pretender" was also the act's biggest R&B hit, with an 11-week run atop that chart. In 1956, The Platters appeared in the first film: Rock Around The Clock, and performed their songs: "Only You (And You Alone)" and "The Great Pretender". A string of hit singles followed, including three more national #1 hits: "My Prayer" (1956), "Twilight Time" (1958) and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (1958). As well as, more modest chart successes including: "(You've Got) The Magic Touch" (#4) in 1956, "I'm Sorry" (#11) and "He's Mine" (#23) in 1957 and "Enchanted" (#12) in 1959. The Platters soon hit upon the successful formula of updating older standards, including: "My Prayer" (#1), "Twilight Time" (#1), "Harbor Lights" (#8), "To Each His Own" (#21), "If I Didn't Care" (#30), and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (#1). This latter single released topped both the American and British Pop music charts in The Platters-style arrangement. As a group, The Platters began to have difficulties with the public after 1959, when the four male members were arrested in Cincinnati, Ohio, on drug and prostitution charges. Although no one was convicted, their professional reputation was seriously damaged and US radio stations started removing their records from playlists, forcing the group to rely more heavily on European bookings. In 1960, lead vocalist Tony Williams left the group in order to pursue a solo career and was replaced by tenor Sonny Turner. Mercury Records refused to issue further Platters' releases without Tony Williams on lead vocals, provoking a lawsuit between the record label and the group's manager Buck Ram. As a result, the record label spent two years releasing old Tony Williams-era material until the group's record contract lapsed. The group's line-up splintered further when in 1964 Zola Taylor left and was consecutively replaced by Beverly Hansen Harris, Barbara Randolph and, in 1965, by Sandra Dawn. 1965 also saw the departure of Paul Robi, who was replaced by Nate Nelson, former lead voice of The Flamingos. In 1967, baritone Bob White toured with group until 1971. This splintering of the group's line-up led to wrangling over The Platters' name, with injunctions, non-compete clauses, and multiple versions of the act touring at the same time. Tony Williams, Paul Robi, and Zola Taylor led their own Platters' groups and for a short while, Zola Taylor, Paul Robi, and David Lynch joined forces as "The Original Platters" with Tony Williams-clone Johnny Barnes as their lead singer. ****CONTINUE BELOW****

More legal wrangling pursued until in 1969 Herb Reed, the final member of the original Platters, resigned from the group to start his own group, Herb Reed And Sweet River. After his group's demise, Herb Reed performed under the name Herb Reed And The Platters. The Platters differed from most other groups of their era because Buck Ram had the group incorporated in 1956 as Five Platters, Inc (FPI). Each member of the group received a 20% share in the stock, full royalties, and their Social Security was paid. As group members left one by one, Buck Ram and his business partner, Jean Bennett, bought their stock, which they claimed gave them ownership of the "Platters" name. A court later ruled, however, that "FPI was a sham used by Mr Buck Ram to obtain ownership in the name the 'Platters', and FPI's issuance of stock to the group members was 'illegal and void because it violated California corporate securities law". A profusion of legal challenges ensued among the many groups of Platters. Those looking to hear the classic lineup of songs had their pick of approved, disputed, and substituted Platters, including Sonny Turner's, Zola Taylor's, Ritchie Jones' (member 1984-85), Milton Bullock's (member 1967-70), Paul Robi's (managed by his widow), Jean Bennett's "Buck Ram Platters", Monroe Powell's, Herb Reed's, and several other groups with no current ties to the original group. Many had once contained former members who were now retired or deceased. The many different Platters groups lead by former group members continued to perform all around the world throughout the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. In 2024, The Platters continue to perform around the world with Herb Reed Enterprises (an LLC set up by Reed in response to numerous fake Platters groups) owning the rights and trademark to the name. Miscellaneous Notes 🗃: In 1990, the Platters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Platters were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in its inaugural year of 1998. Some reactions to consider 🤔: Biz Markie- Vapors (toninho marcal YT channel), Heather Headley- In My Mind (Official Video) or Ruff Endz- Someone To Love You (Music Video). The Biz Markie song is a Hip-Hop classic and the toninho marcal YT channel has the best quality music video despite the low views. His YT channel (same with OlSkool Jamz YT channel) doesn't come up on the YT algorithm 🤦🏾‍♂thus the low views for a lot of his uploaded music videos despite them being top quality and hit songs from their eras.
