This is widely considered to be the best live performance of any song ever recorded, and it'd get my vote. No auto-tune, no production tricks, just a supremely gifted singer doing his best for his mom in the audience.

I love seeing young men like yourself finding inspiration in good music. This song transcends the times. And you CAN have the same influence as this today you just have to decided to be that young man. Keep up the good work. You should listen to their song " Lost That Loving Feeling" to see both the Righteous Brothers sing another love song together.

You are hearing great vocal because we did not have fancy electronics or computer aids. You had to really be able to SING back then or you couldn't make it. You are right, that's what we "old heads" listen for in today's music. We don't hear it so new music is hard for us to appreciate.

Time did pass at a much slower pace back then. The digital age was a very long way off and seemed more like science fiction than a real possiblity. I was a junior in high school and back then there were dances held every weekend at various venues for the teens. There was no need for police to be there because we didn't have a drug, wepons, or violence problem in the high schools at that time. Most of us had to be home at a certain time anyway. We could count on this song being played at every dance. I was 17 then. I'm 75 now and I still remember how whenever this Righteous Brothers song was played it almost made you fall in love as you were dancing. Thank you for reacting to it.

RE: Your comment about time going by fast. You have to understand this song was written for a 1955 movie called "Unchained," which was about a guy in prison, counting down the days to the end of his long sentence, as he contemplated whether he could wait it out or whether he would have to attempt a prison break to maintain his sanity. The song is about his longing for his lost lover that he can hardly wait to get back to. Hence the lyrics like, "Wait for me, wait for me, I'll be comin' home, wait for me."

That was Bobby Hatfield doing a solo on The Andy Williams Show. Bill Medley, his singing partner was off stage watching. They're not biological brothers but at a show in southern California a group of black Marines yelled out, "that's righteous brother!" and their stage name was sealed for all time! And righteous they indeed were! My husband drove from our hometown of Chicago to St. Louis just because his kid brother wanted to see them and he said they were terrific! Try them together with "You've Lost That Loving Feeling," "Soul and Inspiration," "You'll Never Walk Alone," and Bobby solo again on "Summertime," and "Ebb Tide."

There's a video out there where Andy Williams chats & jokes with both of the Righteous Brothers after they sang together but b4 Bobby Hatfield does this solo. It explains a few things like how they chose the name Righteous Brothers. Bobby had a cold, extreme stage fright & his mom was sitting behind Bobby hearing him sing professional for the 1st time. You would never know by the ease of his live performance. The recording of Unchained Melody was also used in the movie "Ghost" 25 yrs later & it became a hit all over again. I hope you hear & react to the amazing voices of both brothers (not related and Bill Medley is the baritone) in the videos of "You Lost That Loving Feeling", "Soul and Inspiration" and "You'll Never Walk Alone". You will know why their talent & songs have stood the test of time. Good reaction & I subscribed.

Apologies if someone else had said this: The song was from a 1955 movie called "Chained" about a chain gang prison. It was sung by a black opera singer named Todd Duncan (one of the prisoners) - it's on KZfaq. The song won an Academy Award in 1955. For the 1955 versions, check out Roy Hamilton and Sam Cooke (on KZfaq). But this version was the one that really took off. Bobby was the one that started singing "I need your love" up an octave, which other singers began copying.

I love seeing younger generations realize old school music is real and that they can actually appreciate it. Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers is thought to have done the best version. Look it up. 1955 Unchained Melody written for movie "Chained" about a man in prison longing to see his wife and family when he gets home. Al Hibbler and Roy Hamilton, both great black singers, recorded this song in 1950's. My mother is no longer here but she talked of Al Hibbler's recording as long as I can remember. I think the reason time goes so fast now, Golden Child, is because people took plenty of time to enjoy what they did. Everyone is always in a hurry today, and the phrase "Slow down and smell the flowers" is comical to them. It wasn't to us. We knew it was the key to happiness and beauty. We do see it, but no one listens to us anymore, sweet young man. Keep doing what you are doing, and soak in everything that is new to you. That is where true wealth is.

They were a 2 man group, but not actually blood brothers. The guy singing in this video, Bobby Hatfield, passed away in 2003. The other guy, Bill Medley, is 82 years old and still performing. If you do some searching on KZfaq, there is another version of this same video that shows a brief interview that took place with his singing partner and the host of a show. That short video explains why only one of them is performing in this song. Kind of funny.

One reason why I like listening to pre 1997 singers is that before that date autotune hadn't been invented so what you hear is natural talent. Tom Jones is another example of pure talent from that time, he starts his songs off in a key that most guys can sing along with then he changes key and leaves you in his dust.

At this time, 1965, popular music in US was mostly slow, ballad-like songs. The rock progression took place in the UK (but based on US black blues). Most important was the Beatles. In 1965 they released their 5th album "Help!" - much faster. But in the middle of the 60s there was already a large number of rock groups. In US Zappa released his first album in 1966. Not really rock, but with huge influence on the rock music for the coming +50 years. Jimi Hendrix was also from US but made his breakthrough in London. The Byrds was an American rock group. Their hit in 1965 was "Turn turn turn".

As a ‘Boomer’ I can say from experience that our music was hardly sedate (I was 14 in 1960). Rock and roll music started in the 50s in North America with the black artists and was embraced by the young crowd enthusiastically… one of the first white rockers was Elvis. That cross-over phenomenon spread fast and had parents up in arms and some radio stations smashing records. The Righteous Brothers came on the scene in 62 and were doing straight R&B until Phil Specter took them on and gave them ballads to sing The Beatles were inspired by them enough that when they made their first North American tour in ‘64 they asked the Righteous Brothers to open for them… and that was before they became famous.

@@zanhar7688 Thanks! I was only 7 in 1960 and have no real first hand memory of music of the 50s. And living in Sweden may make it more biased. UK music had easier to reach Sweden compared to US'. But Elvis must have been huge also here. A great Swedish singer, Monica Zetterlund, in the 60's, was probably influenced by the black blues.

Oh, we definitely see it. I cant say there is much music i listen to today. Worship is all i want to hear. All that electronic voice bending and screaming, spcussing is nothing more than angry musicians with a vengeance.

A love song, indeed. Things may have changed from then, but you can change yourself to love and live in the traditions of back then. Good change is infectious!

There is nothing wrong with today's music, except it is not what I like to listen too. I personally like the music of the 50's, 60's, and 70's which is my favorite. There are two in the Rightous Brothers, Bill Melody & Bobby Heyfield (whom you just saw). You should check out their songs You Lost That Loving Feeling, Soul & Insperation, Rock N Roll Heaven which cover from the 60's and 70's.
