I was a teenager when this song came out and we called it late night songs because that's what we listened to when we left a party and were heading home.

Very nostalgic. It doesn't matter when you were this age... Sometimes we want to grow-up so fast, we end up missing some of the best times of our lives.

Cherub Rock. THE quintessential Smashing Pumpkins 'theme' song, if they ever had one. Just a hard-ass, hard-hitting, uplifting groove.

Cherub Rock and Bullet with Butterfly Wings for the harder stuff. Today and 33 for the softer feelings, and things like Disarm inbetween. (I think I still would go with Disarm as fav song)

The video for “Perfect” by The Pumpkins is like the sequel to “1979” where the kids have grown. “Mayonaise” is widely considered one of their best. Everyone will also say Cherub Rock, Tonight, Tonight, or Today because those were their big hits.

Billy Corgan (vocals/ guitar) is the main songwriter and band leader of the Smashing Pumpkins, a band he formed in the late 80's w/ guitarist James Iha, drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, and female bassist D'arcy... Initially, Corgan wanted Smashing Pumpkins to be a dark, quirky rock band (he was a huge Rush fan!) and became part of the 'alternative rock' scene... Smashing Pumpkins released their debut album 'Gish' in 1991 on a indie label w/ producer Butch Vig (who also produced Nirvana's 'Nevermind' album that same year). With 'Gish' a minor success, and Nirvana suddenly exploding in popularity by 1992, the 'alternative rock' scene became the new trend, and the Smashing Pumpkins got signed to major label Virgin Records... their music videos for 'Siva' and 'Rhinoceros' got MTV airplay. Working on a new record in '92 w/ producer Butch Vig again, the Smashing Pumpkins also went thru some turmoil - James Iha and D'arcy were a couple, and they had broken up... the sessions for the next album left Billy Corgan in the studio playing all the guitars and bass, while Jimmy Chamberlain played drums. In 1993, the album 'Siamese dream' was released as both Iha and D'arcy returned to tour... the album got a huge response on MTV, as part of the new 'grunge rock' sound and hit the top 10 charts in the US and sold 4 million copies. The band's label released an album of rare Smashing Pumpkins tracks in 1994 titled 'Pisces iscariot'. After the 1994 death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, Corgan knew that the 'grunge' trend would soon be over... he wrote 56 songs by 1995 and began working w/ Nine Inch Nails' producers Flood & Alan Moulder to incorporate more musical elements... In '95, Smashing Pumpkins delivered a double-CD 'Mellon Collie & the infinite sadness' and it was a huge success, hitting #1 on the US charts and selling over 5 million copies... '1979' was a huge MTV single from that record, which also had the videos for 'Bullet with butterfly wings' ... 'Zero' ... 'Tonight, tonight' ... and 'Thirty-three'... However, tragedy struck the Smashing Pumpkins on tour in 1996 when their touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin died of an OD on heroin and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain was arrested on possession in that incident. Chamberlain was soon fired and the tour was completed w/ a session drummer. Smashing Pumpkins veered away from heavy rock in 1997 into electronic music, following the success of the soundtrack singles 'Eye' and 'The end is the beginning is the end' (from the 'Batman & Robin' movie soundtrack) ... the band released the electronic beat- influenced album 'Adore' in 1998... the new sound was not well-received in the US; the album went to #2 and sold platinum (1 million copies), but sold more overseas. In 1999, drummer Jimmy Chamberlain returned to the Smashing Pumpkins, and they announce the next album would return to the heavy rock sound... However, after the next album was recorded, bassist D'arcy was fired in 2000 (She was alleged to have serious drug problems... she would be arrested multiple times and struggled w/ drug addiction for decades) Smashing Pumpkins released the album 'Machina/ the machines of God' in 2000, and bassist Melissa Auf der Maur joined the band for the tour... unfortunately, Corgan's difficult demands had left them struggling to find management, and the album hit #3 on the charts and only went gold (half million copies) in the US. In 2001, Corgan announced that this would be the final Smashing Pumpkins tour. After the breakup of the Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan unsuccessfully launched projects like Zwan and a solo record (neither did well)... In 2007, Corgan and Chamberlain recorded and released a new Smashing Pumpkins album 'Zeitgeist' and announced a tour w/ new members... but Jimmy Chamberlain soon left the line-up... Corgan released a few more Smashing Pumpkins records, but none had the success of their 90's albums... In 2018, the Smashing Pumpkins announced a reunion w/ guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain (original bassist D'arcy was not invited back) and toured successfully, but new albums in 2018 and 2020 have not been hugely successful.

Great group in the 90s. I think they just released a new album. This song definitely reminds me of doing dumb stuff as a teen. Hanging out in cemeteries and train stations late at night, jumping off of roofs. Also makes me nostalgic for the music of the time, so many good bands came out in the 90s. I recommend "Today" from SP.

Definitely check out more Smashing Pumpkins - “Cherub Rock”, “Mayonaise”, “Rocket”, and “Zero” are my suggestions. I’ve just got to say, you both always bring a smile to my face. You have unique perspectives, with great insight and you always bring in that eagerness to know more and also terrific rationalizations. You give me hope for the next generation, and also you two are relationship goals personified, the dynamic between you is just lovely. Keep kicking ass and being wonderful, and have a phenomenal weekend! 😃❤️

There was a joke going around for a while that Gerard Way from MCR was Billy Corgan's kid, even Billy himself joking about it in an interview, because they have kind of similar voices. It's pretty funny. You can probably get more of a resemblance from some of SP's more metal-esque songs, like "Zero" or "Bullet With Butterfly Wings."

MTV 2 used to have a show where they play a video with 3 on the side that you could call and vote for the next video. Of course this video won and it starts playing and I'm jamming and watching and loving the video cause it's a great video. So it's almost over and I'm like oh yeah what video is winning on the side! All 3 videos to vote for had zero percent! My thought was everyone was doing like me and so into the video nobody called, not even one vote. Whatever was the top video played

That video is the most vibe video of all time. It nails down perfectly what happened in the 80s and some of the 90s, just a bunch of idiot kids with too much power, driving around, but the funny thing is the eneding. There was a time every weekend night, at which point the boys would get a bit too crazy and boys and girls would separate, because girls knew things were escalating too much for them, and the vandals were coming out and the good boys where hiding, tho they are the same person, if you know what i mean. Its just the perfect escalation of a night out when you were young in those times.
