Yes, The Smiths! Probably the best band of the 80s. Check out This Charming Man, How Soon Is Now, The Headmaster Ritual, Well I Wonder, Bigmouth Strikes Again, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, Still Ill, Half A Person ... so many good songs.

The guitarist Johnny Marr has many many very cool rhythm guitar songs just like this. It was very advanced songwriting in the 80s, and it still is today. What happened is that Johnny Marr wrote and recorded the rhythm guitar parts and gave the singer, Morrissey, The cassette tape to listen yo, and then Morrissey wrote the lyrics. If you like this one, listen to the guitar intro to The Smiths song called “Bigmouth Strikes Again”. Great reaction!

You must go down the Smiths rabbit hole, one of the, if not the, greatest bands to ever cine from these shores 🇬🇧 'This Night Has Opened My Eyes' would be my next suggestion 👍

So many bands tried to emulate The Smiths back in the day and just sounded generic. They played simple songs on a high level.

Johnny made has so many fantastic guitar lines from the smiths through the the, electronic to modest mouse. Well worth a deep dive. Morrissey is a hilarious lyricist too.

LUCKY YOU, never hearing The Smiths. Yeah, the 80's, they were around from '82 to '87 from the musical centre of the Universe, Manchester, England...just kidding. One of my favourite bands of all time. Apparently, I could be wrong in parts here, Johnny Marr wrote this song just after getting a record deal. To sweeten the deal, he asked the rep at the label to buy him a gibson he really wanted. The deal was struck and Marr wrote this in one sitting. If you love jangly guitars, you're gonna love their whole discography. Though they do have some songs that stray from that in a good way, some also with beautiful piano driven tunes. I just gotta recommend "How soon is Now?" amazing guitar riff, and "The Headmaster Ritual", it has an interesting altered tuning from guitarist, Johnny Marr, inspired by Joni Mitchell, if my memory serves me well. Thanks, Erol, really loved all you had to say and what you observed, musically and lyrically. I would love to see you break down songs with your guitar as well as keyboard.

Yes… That’s a great suggestion. I’d love to analyze all those guitar parts.

Yes. Morrisey (the singer) was very ‘tongue in cheek’ with his lyrics … most content is negative on The Smiths tunes - but I think you need some negative at times as it reflects true ‘balanced’ life good times/bad times, the ying and the yang, etc. Try ‘what difference does it make’ or ‘please please please let me get what I want’ or ‘barbarism begins at home’ or… well, many many more!

Thank you, sir. Back in 1984, as a 17-teen year old angst ridden youth, listening to this album for three months straight, the sound of The Smiths did have a deep impact on me. Since I'm not musically trained, I focused on the lyrics. Brilliant stuff by Morrissey. But then again, the music stood out so much from Duran Duran, Wham, Lionel Richie, Michael J and all of that other crap going on at the time. Listening to their few albums through their short lived career, made me appreciate the musicianship of Johnny Marr(guitars), Andy Rourke(bass) and Mike Joyce(drums). I walk on the streets of Göteborg, wearing my "Johnny fuckin Marr" tshirts with great pride. Thanks again for a beautiful reaction!

A classic Smiths song. The guitars are beautiful. The bass less pronounced than usual for Smiths songs but absolutely foundational still. Always interested to hear a musician's take on the Smiths they often have an unconventional structure, particularly in the way the vocals relate to the music. Marr is not a trained musician and can't read music and Morrissey is not a trained musician/singer. Marr would send him the music via cassette tape and then Morrissey would lay down the vocals, often placing the chorus where it doesn't belong conventionally. One of the more unique combinations that lasted only a few years.

Please react to, that joke isn't funny anymore by the smiths.. Cheers

Marr Tuned his guitar up to F sharp as standard. They both adored American girl groups. Heaven knows I'm missing him now was the stolen skewed prism.
