A few years ago my 17 year old said she hates the participation trophies because it causes the kids that worked hard to work less because they figure what's the point of working hard if I'm gonna get a trophy no matter what. And she said it doesn't help the kids that lose because then they have less motivation to improve cause they figure they'll get a trophy either way. Now she said this when she was like 13 and was participating in math competitions, she has wanted to earn whatever she got. That thought process right there made me a proud momma.

That's how you know you did it right. Good job, mama!! ❤ I got three gen z'ers and they're surrounded by so much bs, especially in school nowadays, that we have to be that much more vigilant as parents. It's true it takes a village to raise a child though and I wish that village would go back to the days where it was more accommodating in the effort to raise decent, productive citizens but that's not gonna happen anytime soon, I fear. Take care HOGFAM and much love!

Hey Asia, no one is 'unsubscribing' because you don't agree with one of tom's points on here. His music is designed to generate conversation - as it did between you and your man. Civil discourse is possible and Tom's music inspires that. We know you rock with Tom on most songs, so it's all good. There a few of his that i'm not crazy about. This was my first song my wife and I ever heard from him and we were instantly hooked! We HOGs love you both and love your reactions - we prefer genuine responses and enjoy getting to talk about what people disagree with. The key is "talk" - not scream or shout with an emotional meltdown (which is unfortunately the status quo in todays twitterworld).

Yeah I agree not everyone is going to like every single song..but this one had some good points like considering bacteria on Mars life..but not a heart beat on earth! I also like the "call me homophobic because I don't want to date guys" ..doesn't mean we don't want others not to have the right to date the same sex if that is what they want..but yeah if you don't think exactly how they think you're labeled! People are stupid! Lol 🤣

I can see the point of view of not wanting your kid to feel hurt, but it's a bad message, a bad lesson, even though the intentions are good. Life is competitive in many aspects, teaching kids who didn't win that they did, when they didn't, is setting them up for failure as an adult, low expectations, and denying them learning the proper way to cope with failure. You tried, that's great, but you didn't win and that sucks, learn from mistakes, try harder next time, train more, study more, and if you still don't win after giving it 100% then at least you know you gave it everything. Also, you're not going to win at everything every time, but as long as you give it your all when it's important to you, that's what matters. Just my opinion.

Participation trophies teach kids that they get rewarded no matter what, that's not how real life works and they should be taught that from a young age. I played baseball as a child and if you didn't get third place or higher then we didn't get a trophy. It's motivation to play and try hard.

I got a participation trophy back in the third grade. I hate that thing. It's a constant reminder that I wasn't good enough and the adults in my life back then pitied me. Luckily, it toughened me up. Not in the thing I got the trophy for but I learned not to let people treat me like I need to be coddled and protected from the world.

I love watching these back. I am a mom and I am competitive so I see it too ways. If you have things given to you for nothing then they grow up and expect that in adulthood. They don't understand or learn how to deal with disappointment, make goals and learn to WORK for what you want. If at first you don't succeed try try again. You teach them to cope with disappointment and how to push harder or try different ways to achieve goals! It hurts to lose what happens when they don't get that promotion at work? They flip because it wasn't handed to them? Have to look at life lessons that sports teach too. I was raised with no participation trophies and we learned to help teach our weakest player because they were part of our team. We didn't put them down we helped them because we won as a team and lost as a team. Love watchin yall. :)

I honestly believe he meant the trophy thing. I loved sports when I was a kid, if i lost it hurt yes, but it just motivated me to practice more and work harder to achieve my win. Rewarding someone for losing isn't teaching them to understand the feeling of disappointment and can lead to major emotional problems when they are older.

Especially when ya’ll pause the video to give your personal perspectives - it’s proof that we can disagree on how things are handled like kids coming in last and getting a participation trophy. I can understand both sides for sure! My initial reaction was like “why give kids a reward for participating”...then I remembered the medals I’ve gotten for participating in a 5k race and remembered that I appreciated the medal for completing it. Sooooo...I have to admit it’s a good thing and this reaction actually changed my opinion on something! 👍🏻

Simon Sinek has a great piece about participation medals. He says it actually devalues the medals actually earned. And, in turn, it makes the kids getting the participation medals feel worse about themselves because they see the other kids getting "better" trophies and know they dont deserve a medal themself. As a PE teacher for younger kids, I teach winning and losing. Kids NEED to know how to accept and deal with failure. It's a part of life and the earlier they know and understand it, the better they can handle it in the future.

🙋‍♀️ As a mom I completely agree. Some kids get bullied & think they aren't enough. Then get bullied for losing. At a certain age where it's hard for them to understand, I think the winners trophies should be obviously different but yes, children should get something for participating. When they get to an age to understand & decipher the difference is when they know it's a competition & not everyone walks away with something. I remember watching a 6 yr old cry & it was heartbreaking. .

I remember when I was doing soccer tournaments, we often ended up somewhere among the bottom 5 teams and we would get a participation trophy. I always thought "Why? We're not even in the top 3. Only they get to have trophies". I learned very early on that it is okay to lose, since you're rarely ever the only one, and you have to try a little better next time. I really feel like if kids get participation trophies every single game they play, it would at some point get boring because there is a lot less competition

Maybe we didn’t get the job or promotion we wanted, maybe we got outbid on a sale and lose the business, go to buy a car and it’s already sold, etc, etc, etc. Not everyone is a winner all the time and losing not only builds character, but builds that desire to make yourself better and stronger for the next challenge rather than shy away or give up because you feel entitled to a certain outcome.

I always told my kids after their team lost that they won by just being there and giving it their all. The only participation award they ever got was Dad taking them out to eat or getting some ice cream. They always suited up to play year after year because they wanted to...

BJ, you are absolutely correct about the participation trophies. It builds character to lose sometimes, and to get up and continue to fight and pursue the best of yourself. If everyone gets a trophy, no one gets a trophy, it becomes worthless

Over here we figured the participation thing out 30 years ago :P You get a ribbon for participating, a nicer ribbon if you've participated multiple years in a row (other kind of dedication) and medals/trophies for those that actually win.

Champions are made from losing and getting better to not want to 'feel' what losing felt like. Participation trophies take away from drive to make yourself and or your team better. It teaches complacency and the just show up attitude that is prevalent in the work force today.

Thank God I grew up in the 70s. We lost a ball game I hung my head going to the car and Dad would look at me and say y'all got beat today. You guys are going to have to practice harder and maybe you'll get them the next time.

The problem is, if you award everything to them just for showing up than they expect throughout life. Maybe your kid can't play baseball, but maybe he excels at Band. Try all but get to what they are good at. If they like the sport they always lose at than losing should inspire them to work harder.

I'm with BJ on the trophies, I sucked at sports when i was a kid, couldn't run fast, or jump high. If I had got a trophy for sucking I might not have kept on looking for something I was good enough to actually win at. Which eventually I did find something I could compete at and win a trophy for being the best. That feeling of accomplishment cant be replaced with a participation trophy.

It comes down to, do you want to be long term nice or short term nice. Giving participation trophies is short term nice but mean in the long term. Hurting their feelings now is short term mean but long term nice. That's why two parents are needed. One gives that fuzzy warm feeling so the kids believe in themselves and the other gives them a taste of reality so their belief in themselves isn't shattered on the first obstacle.

Okay, haha, long time response but I’m with BJ on this. I’m 42, 43 on the 18th and in elementary, we had field day, we didn’t have “participation trophies”. As a child, I knew that I had to work harder. It’s a part of growing up, nothing is handed to you unless you work for it.

My son was 7 and my daughter 5. They played soccer on different teams. My daughter’s team went undefeated. My son’s team went 1-9. That one win was a forfeit when the other team didn’t show up. Both my kids got trophies. My son didn’t understand about losing and it took away from my daughter’s wins. Kids need to learn disappointment because life is full of it. Loss pushes them to do better the next time.....
