Thanks for checking out our Van Halen reaction. We watched Panama on our AC/DC live stream. Unfortunately, the audio quality isn't that great, so it wasn't the best way to check out Van Halen. If you have a better request, leave it in the comments.

RIP to Eddie Van Halen. Diamond Dave knows martial arts it's why he can kick high and being very limber on stage presentation. Earlier (rawer) VH is the best, as with most bands, before they get too far in the clutches of the label. They were already getting more commercial with this one, IMO. Runnin with the Devil, Unchained, Down on Mean Streat, Jamie's Cryin, Everybody Want's Some, Eruption/You Really Got Me Now are great examples of their dirtier, more auspicious beginnings. RIP Eddie🙏

I found some videos on Bitchutes of the audio of Eddie playing at party or a bar in San Bernardino !! from 1976, unbelievably better than I ever heard him play ! You could hear the confidence in his playing and I never heard these songs before and it was the most technical and extremely difficult guitar playing I've ever heard and he was flawless. It gave me chills because I was thinking he was probably only 18 or 19 years old and he was absolutely killing it and I know that those people at the party never heard anything like that before back then.

Everyone's first foray into VH should be Runnin' With the Devil. The intro just sets up the whole experience. That said, Hot for Teacher is a great video, and when you do some Sammy Hagar fronted VH, Black and Blue is a song I think you'd both love; Lex for the sound and Brad for the lyrics.

True story. When Runnin' With The Devil hit the radio in '78, disco might as well have died right then and there. Other bands thankfully held the torch through the 70s (Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, etc.), but once this band hit it big, hard rock guitar was BACK, and in a big way. When they played in Seattle, overnight my junior high school turned into a walking demo store for VH clothing, patches, hats, scarves, everything (same thing with Motley Crue a couple years later in '83, lol).

@@johnhulse6496 Debatable; just a different era/sound, that's all. Eddie built his own guitar in '78 and was an innovator in his own right, appealing to the next generation of hard rock fans. No disrespect to the amazing Mr. Page, but EVH was my generation's guitar legend. 🤷‍♂

A bit of music history for the hosts, Edward Van Halen was invited by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson to play on the album "Thriller". He re-arranged the center section of Beat It (without asking. Fortunately, Jackson loved it and thanked him for making the song better) and recorded the solo that went on the record. This was a game changer. Suddenly, radio stations that did not play Motown, Michael Jackson, nor other Black artists, were now playing Beat It heavily, helping to pave the way for Jackson and others to cross over and change the course of popular music. EVH refused any payment but did ask them to buy him some beer after the recording session...

The boys from Pasadena. I remember seeing them when they first started to tour. Definitely high energy.

A friend of mine years ago had got hold of the original stems of the recording of this album and he played the vocal track to me .... It was hilarious you could hear the empty bottles being kicked around their feet!

Also check out David Lee Roth's videos after he left Van Halen. "Just Like Paradise", "Goin' Crazy", "Yankee Rose". And also check out the band Steelheart. The singer in that band has great range. Listen to "(Angel Eyes) I'll Never Let You Go", "Can't Stop Me Loving You" and "She's Gone".

I saw Van Halen twice in the 80s, both times a great experience. David Lee Roth has a great rock voice, which is different from a great voice. He has a good enough voice for rock, but his main ability was as a showman. He knew how to command the stage, doing crazy and fun stuff that captured the audience.
