A "void" refers to something that is empty, lacking, or without substance or value. This song finds Melanie Martinez going through some rough times with severe anxiety, sadness, and overthinking. She feels like she's stuck in a bottomless pit of self-criticism. In other words, a void. Martinez needs to dig deep to find her inner light. The song starts with Martinez realizing something's wrong inside her and feeling society is to blame for some of it. But she knows she's the only one who can judge herself. The chorus focuses on the negative voices in Martinez' head that bring down her self-esteem. She wants to escape this void and turn down those voices, but it's easier said than done. In the post-chorus, Melanie uses the image of confessing to a priest to symbolize her own self-evaluation and quest to defeat her dark side. She describes herself as feeling tangled up in her own thoughts and emotions, like a bloody mess. Martinez released "Void" as the second single from Portals. The album contains 13 tracks about death, grief and what lies beyond. The singer wrote most of the songs in her home's "portal room" - a space she described to Apple Music as "an entry point for benevolent spirits to come and rest on their journey." Portals begins with the song "Death," which is about the initial shock and pain of losing someone close to you. "Void," the second track, is about the numbness and confusion that can come with grief. "'Void' has many layered meanings for me aside from it being generally about my anxiety, my tendency to overthink, and being overly critical of myself," explained Martinez. "It is also the second stage of the afterlife that I found was the most commonly described experience in hypnotherapy. It is about finding yourself in a dark place that feels like an endless abyss of self-criticism. There is not God, nor man there are able to judge you. You are left alone with your harshest critic, yourself, and the only way out is to find The light within."

This character is meant to be a reincarnation of her previous character “cry baby” who dies at the end “of k-12” (the previous album which also has visuals and some dialogue )this album-“portals” is about her own experience in relationships with other people, the music industry, and other personal experiences they’re also about (and or themed around) her character going through the kind of in between space of life and death first song being death last being womb (also her new character is a nymph) I recommend at least watching k-12 in order bc they are combined into a full movie/visual album so they tell a story

I’ve been a fan of Melanie Martinez since her days on The Voice. So this Faerie is Melanie’s 2nd persona. Her first persona was Crybaby (watch Crybaby next), and now this is her new persona after being reborn. All her songs and Albums have a story. (Sorda like an Anthology, but there’s an “order” to watch them. ). First, her Cry Baby Album. This one tells the child era stories (e.g. how she got the name, dysfunctional family, social life, etc). Each song in Cry Baby has a music video to it. Definitely look up the order you wanna watch it in. Lol Her second album K-12, tells Crybaby’s story through school and other things surrounding school (e.g. authority, rules, norms, peer pressure, etc.) This album has a whole MOVIE for it. Definitely recommend you watch it!!! Now, we’re caught up to Melanie’s third album, PORTALS. In this album or era, Melanie has “killed” Crybaby, but more like she’s transformed and ascended into a higher being or form. So yea, definitely look into watching her older stuff so you get an idea of how she has grown as an artist and as a person. Then the other PORTAL songs will make sense. lol

I read an article that said Melanie Martinez resisted being turned into a sexy Latina singer, she could have done that if she wanted to. You can see that Melanie is an attractive girl with a nice body in her videos, detention, and high school sweethearts, some of my favorite videos by her. I think she could have become more famous if she was a sexy type of singer instead of being so weird, because sex sells when it comes to female singers.
