The 'rap cadence' that Lin-Manuel Miranda uses isn't really new. Gilbert and Sullivan used something similar for the patter songs in their operettas. One of the most famous is the Nightmare Song from 'Iolanthe'. KZfaq has a wonderful video of 'My Name is John Wellington Wells' from 'The Sorcerer', sung by the inimitable Martyn Green. Mr. Miranda gives us a wonderful musical pun in this song. In the second half, when the four main parts are being sung together, he is echoing a Renaissance song-form called a 'madrigal'.

I don’t think he was specifically saying that a rap cadence for musicals was new but more that, Lin-Manuel songs have a certain factor that you can tell it IS a Lin-Manuel Miranda composition.

@@LiterallyStuart I disagree. While it's true that Mr. Miranda's style is easily recognized, many people today have never heard of Gilbert and Sullivan and think that rap/hip-hop came totally out of thin air. Instead, like all recent forms of music, it built on something that came before. You can clearly hear the influence of classical music in the works of groups like Yes, Led Zeppelin, and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, as well as more recent performers.

@@patriciagerresheim2500 I agree, at the same time, I don’t know how feasible it is to expect everyone to care about these older pieces. Don’t get me wrong, they are brilliant and everyone should, I’m not knocking them whatsoever. Just the way that music is structured it will always be building upon itself and to expect everyone to be able to attribute it back to various parts in history is like a dream that sadly today’s landscape cannot support.

@@LiterallyStuart Actually, knowledge of older forms of music is more common than you think. There are hundreds of opera houses and concert halls in America, not just in Europe. Cartoons use classical music all the time, from Looney Tunes to Animaniacs. The same goes for commercials. i heard a couple over the week-end that used opera arias for the background music. You are probably more familiar with classical music than you think. You know that fast music used for the Roadrunner cartoons? 'Dance of the Comedians' from the opera 'The Bartered Bride'.
