@@YaelleG Oh, there's humour. All his originals are funny too, just not specifically parodying another song. Most of them do parody the STYLE of a particular artist though, sometimes called a 'pastiche'. "Dog Eat Dog" is a Talking Heads pastiche. Mr. Popeil is the B-52s. Velvet Elvis is The Police, and Biggest Ball of Twine is Harry Chapin.

Weird Al always asks permission to parody anyone, and a couple of artists love his work enough they were in concert and had to concentrate to make sure they sang their own song indtead of his. Donny Osmond as a backup dancer makes this more hilarious as he has always been the singer and he's nerding out as a dancer.

The best part about that is that he has no obligation to do that. Parody laws are pretty loose, you don't even need the original artist's permission to make a parody of their work for profit. But he's such a kind person, he makes the effort anyway.

Something very cool about Weird Al was that he never required licensing to create his music. He would personally sell his pitch, ask for permission, and if they said no, he moved on. Eventually his name was so unbelievably widespread that a cover of his, would make originals pop-off generating original artists' revenue. It was a better time. Creativity is WHO the guy is.

"Chicken Pot Pie" got a no, for example, because "Live and Let Die"'s original artist was vegetarian-the irony being that Al had turned vegetarian by this time, too, but he just thought it was funny anyway, lol. The first Weird Al song I heard was when I was a kid in the 80s: "Eat It" - a parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat It". After that there was a slew of songs. In the early 90s he spoke with Kurt Cobain on the phone about doing a parody of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Cobain wondered if it was gonna be about food. Weird Al said something to the effect that it was gonna be about how no one knows the lyrics to your songs. Other artists have gone on record saying they were honored when approached by Weird Al because that is a sight that you're "made it" as an artist.

I was listening to Weird Al when I was 12. And now y'all are saying you've known of him since you were younger. I feel like I'm I'm old AF but Al is like iconic for being there for multiple generations. Funny dude, but honestly a really, really good musician. This one is always gonna make me laugh!

@@shanehebert396 Dr. Demento is where I first heard Weird Al back in the 70s. Been a fan ever since. Genius in France is probably my favorite because I'm also a big Frank Zappa fan. It's supposedly so difficult that he and the band can't play it live.

@@otherkorean It was 1979 when I heard "My Bologna" on the Dr. D show. I was a sophomore or junior in HS. Been a fan ever since. I was lucky enough to see him live at the Greek Theatre in Hollywood, with my son. It was the Poodle Hat tour in 2003. He and his band are all amazing musicians. I'm white and nerdy myself, so this is one of my very favorites of his.

Gentlemen, I submit for your consideration: 'Hardware Store' by Weird Al, it's one of his original songs and will absolutely blow your minds. On the subject of ERB: 'Vlad the Impaler vs Dracula', 'Clint Eastwood vs Bruce Lee', 'Muhammed Ali vs Michael Jordan', and 'Thor vs Zeus' are all excellent choices, but ERB really only has like two or three that AREN'T awesome. Edit: Nevermind, I'm stupid. Start with 'Moses vs Santa Claus', you won't be sorry.

I love all the little things going in this video. Key and Peele in the car, Seth Green with the action figures and the ass slap, Donny Osmand dancing. The red flares shaped like Pacman when he's dressed like Chamillionaire. Key and Peele locking the door despite being in a convertible. The vulcan sign at the end. And more I know I missed. I don't know who the guys were at the bowling alley or that flipped him off in the park or the guy who sold him the Star Wars VHS tape. I had to slow it down and stop it, but the questions on the Trivial Pursuit card are hysterical. They're obviously fake.
@almostfm
@almostfm 11 ай бұрын
Like so many things Weird Al puts in his videos, the door-locking joke actually works on two levels. Yes, it's a convertible, so locking the doors doesn't do anything. But locking the doors is the stereotypical reaction of middle-class and above white people when they find themselves in an African -American neighborhood. Reversing it that way just cranks up the funny.
