Got myself a free ticket for BlackHat too, and it looks like we had completely different experiences despite going to some of the same talks. I still had a blast and kept busy the entire time still though, and immediately missed the week-long summer camp after I left. Felt like there was too much for me to do in those five days. It was also cool meeting people I only talked to on Twitter before too. Definitely looking forward your vid on DEFCON CTF. I really wanted to hear more about the described "attack/patch" paradigm changes made this year but didn't want to hang around too much and distract. I understand another player spent a really long time building a defense infrastructure that went completely to waste.

Its not that expensive for me as I live in Vegas :) But, the best thing to do at Defcon is to network and go to events/parties/ villages. Basically, go have fun. You'll be surprised about the people you meet and what they do, and what information they have to share. Dont spend all your time in the talks. Explore around, and also grab all the free swag you can possibly swipe! haha

I was a CA at Black Hat those people you saw walking around with yellow shirts. My college has this thing with BlackHat where they higher us students for a week to help with Black Hat. They gave us a Free Ticket into Defcon and one week's free paid hotel at the Luxor or Mandalay. It was my first time at Vegas as well hope you had quite the experince as I did.

Conferences are always more about the networking and experiences for me. As you say talks can be streamed, blogs can be read. Defcon is worth it for a life experience but honestly my favourite time is staying local. Conferences like Bsides London, Manchester, Leeds, Scotland, Securitay, Steelcon, Brucon are free/cheap and great fun. CTFs and competitions are freaking awesome if you're an introvert and just want to get your hack on whilst in a different environment. But yeah honestly I go to conferences primarily to reconnect with old colleagues, friends and randoms I connected with in the years previously, for that... I find Defcon too "hostile" an environment or rather too full on, where as I'm less like a rabbit in headlights when at local cons.

Fun fact the Las Vegas sign is not in Las Vegas, it is in Paradise City where the strip also resides. Paradise City is an unincorporated town and census-designated place in Clark County, Nevada, United States, adjacent to the city of Las Vegas.

Agreed very much on DEFCON being overrated. I only go because there are usually one or two events/things I'm invited to that I feel like make it worth it or otherwise have a bunch of folks I want to catch up with. The fact that everyone's all there makes it more worth-while. That said, the international costs for flight definitely make it harder to stomach. I have done it before, flying from the UK when I lived there, but that was only because I was playing CTF as well. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.

Your Vlog from Defcon is missing alot. I get you went for the CTF and in doing so you miss a good bit of the conference. but for some of us Defcon is about networking with friends, All the contests and Villages, Badges aka Badge Life and some of the unrecorded talks like skytalks. I learn far more at Defcon and I use it towards CPE hours for several certs ( you may find this out later). IF work pays Id attend Blackhat otherwise i usually attend BsidesLV and Defcon on my own dime.there are so many Villages( too many to name here) and places to learn hands on that you just can't do otherwise. Learning during the day and parties all night for a solid week is crazy. Bsides are all over so you can usually find one closer to home and local meetups/hacker spaces are great for the rest of the year.

I know exactly what you're talking about with regards to Las Vegas and BlackHat/DefCon. Whenever I'm there, the first day I'm like "Woohoo, let's party!". The second day, it's more like "I'm bored, where's my laptop? Maybe I can write some code.". The Las Vegas strip is so fake and it gets old quickly.

the faces shown in the video are from our CTF team. And average age ~25 would probably fit. I blurred faces at the conferences and generally was not allowed to film there. So there are of course a lot of older people too ;)

Haha, well Germans are indeed very sensitive to any kind of nationalism. Especially if it concerns Germanic people. I am from the Netherlands, and there’s a military holiday here in which there are even demonstrations with airplanes, helicopters, military vehicles, navy ships firing blanks and soldiers rescuing ‘hostages’ etc. And German students at my college were completely amazed, or weirded out. One of the two, I couldn’t tell. And they said that in Germany, this could never happen. It would be a disgrace for most Germans.

The problem with DEFCON, Blackhat, CCC and me: 1. I live so far away from where these events are being held, thus it's not possible to go there without losing my home and one or two of my kidneys 2. I don't want to lose any of my devices as I'm broke and some mischievous hackers, unethical researchers or overly excited presenter will absolutely test their new wares, exploits and 0days on unsuspecting people like me and drive me to insanity as I try in vain to track them down and punish them accordingly 3. I cannot afford any burner devices 4. All of above again but multiplied by a factor of 389,182,477,492,047,228,424,917,113,002,174,748.842994757733399884677476520293887777363691%

Start small there are tiny conferences all over the world and not too expensive. The smaller conferences are less know but in my opinion a lot better. Joining a hackerspace helps a lot too. (If they exist where you live)

you do not need a burner device, I and about 40 other people (all penetration testers) went without one, and no one had any issues.

Start local and don't believe the hype but practice safe cyber. Seriously just check out Security bsides if you want cheap/free cons to go to in your area. When I went to Defcon tbh I took my phone in airplane mode and pen and paper. You do not need a conference laptop to go and enjoy yourself. Just chill. With most local cons the danger is even less. CCC is more a... Fuck the government, we love Snowden, thang imo, a bit like HOPE. If that's your thing that's cool but if not, like me you'll find it alienating. If you want to go to a less information security focused event you'd be better off going to something like EMFCamp over in the UK imo.
