Christine McVie doesn't get enough credit for her contributions to the band IMO she's awesome 😍🤘✌♥️

The end of “the Chain” is one of my all time favorite “crescendo” song parts. The bass setting it up, the drums taking it over and the “angry guitar” finishing; it’s just “washing over you”.

Kudos, VERDY, for adding You Make Loving Fun to this review. Christine was the glue that held this group together as well as being the composer/ lyricist on many of their songs and being an accomplished musician and vocalist in her own right. Every single member of this group was vital to their overall success but Christine was always my fave!

I just want to applaud your fans. Usually when I comment with some bit of trivia (because I am an old coot) it just sits there. However with part one I mentioned the previous incarnations of Fleetwood Mac and received so many replies from others I was amazed. Stevie and Lindsey first album Buckingham and Nicks is one for acoustic guitar lovers and should be reviewed. My only complaint with this iteration of Fleetwood Mac is the diminished roll Christine McVie played as I still love her sultry voicing and songwriting acumen. Still the music is fantastic and fueled my life for years.

Now your life will be much better having heard this incredible album. There aren't many albums that don't have a bad son on them, but this is one of the few.

Verdy Rumours is just another perfect example of a perfectly crafted and produced album from the 70's. Albums like this and others like the Eagles Hotel California, Boston 's self titled album, Kansas's Point of Know Return just aren't made today. But as far as Fleetwood Mac goes Verdy you owe it to yourself to check the concert video The Dance and watch this band do their magic live 😄💚

Fleetwood Mac for me is a very rare merge between 3 English musicians: Drums (Fleetwood), bass and the English vocal girl with keyboards, and the American couple: Guitar/male song and female song. In a top 10 of all time greatest albums, this is definitely in there. And I am a hard rock guy (Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and modern Måneskin), but this pop album is feel good, weak lyrics, but insanely good, with no bad songs, only masterpieces, blending English an American music in the early 70's. It will stand throughout time. Peace.

Like it was mentioned before side 2 of the original album started with The Chain , did not include the song Silver Springs but included the song You Make Lovin' Fun. While Silver Springs is without question a good song I would not have chosen it over You Make Lovin Fun on the release of the album. I also remember the impact of flipping the album over and putting the needle on and hearing The Chain as the first track of the B side and I have to disagree with the production choice of starting with any other song in the re-release of this album. Only my opinion of course.

Fun fact: while Fleetwood Mac was recording Rumours, Warren Zevon was down the hall recording his Excitable Boy record with Jackson Brown and Waddy Wachtel producing. They were having trouble nailing the feel of a particular track, so Waddy went down the hall and asked if Mick Fleetwood and John McVie would mind sitting in. They did, and nailed the tune by the second try, although they went on to record another 15 or so versions after that. That song became an enormous hit as well, it’s called Werewolves of London, and is a remarkable one. Excitable Boy is well worth a listen, another classic California record of this period, with brilliant playing, and Zevon’s trademark sardonic, hilarious and heartbreaking lyrics.

I have been listening to this album since it was released. I am impressed with how you pick up every tiny little detail in the music. I have probably noticed everything you mentioned at different times over the course of years actually decades. I applaud you for your ability to notice the details. I am impressed.

It was so nice to watch you discover this album. I have been listening to it since it came out in 1977. I now own 46 Fleetwood Mac albums. They began as a blues band in 1967. There have been 18 people in the band and 14 different lineups. This is the most famous lineup. Stevie Nicks on vocals, Christine McVie on vocals and keyboards, Lindsey Buckingham on vocals and guitar, John McVie on bass and Mick Fleetwood on drums. The 3 lead singers also write their own songs. Having 3 singers gives them a very unique sound.

You should check out a live version of Silver Spring, and watch the interaction between Stevie and Lindsey (she wrote the song about him). They stare each other down, both essentially screaming at each other in the song's climax. Lindsey's finger style on electric guitar sometimes sounds like a banjo.

'Silver Springs'.....I think that was a song written by her, but was left off the original album. The first time I ever heard it, was when they did their tour....I think it's called 'The Dance'. She's up there on stage & starts singing directly to Lindsay Buckingham. GREAT song & VERY emotional. A 'live' performance too.

"You Make Loving Fun" is my top track on the album (and Ms. McVie's "Say You Love Me" is best from the Mac's eponymously-titled album that immediately preceded Rumours) ---v. pleased that you didn't get cheated of it👍 Millions of Gen Xers now aged 50+ grew up in a household with a copy of this record to be found in Mom and/or Dad's collection, and these reax were easy to enjoy...somehow reminded me of the last time that I was in 🇨🇦, listening to a classic rock station on a summer afternoon drive from Montréal to Québec (terre de mes 🇮🇪 aïeux), with all of the familiar lyrics of course in English and the presenter/DJ speaking between songs en français ---not at all typical stuff to me!

"The Chain" In spite of how you felt about the way the music feels, the vocals are what makes that songs with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks and then Cristine McVee coming in behind them and it's pure magic. But the lyrics are everything because that's why the song feels the way it does.

On "Silver Springs", "Dreams" and maybe "I Don't Want To Know" Stevie Nicks is singing about Lindsey Buckingham the lead guitarist. They had a nasty breakup right before they started recording this album. On "Go Your Own Way", "Never Going Back" and maybe "Second Hand News" Lindsey Buckingham is singing about Stevie Nicks.

Rumors was one of the first albums to assemble music track on track. It was ground breaking in its day before computerized music. The album was created at a time the band was falling apart emotionally with breakups and betrayals. At times it was so bad the band members avoided talking to each other except with the music. The success of the album created a situation where they had to stay together with all the pain and tension that entailed. It led to very emotionally charged performances that the fans could not get enough of.

The sound at the beginning of Silver Spring is a guitar. He's got it running through a volume pedal and he's doing swells with it (slowly rocking it up and down). It might also be done with the volume knob on the guitar.

You are very skillful in picking out details in songs. I am taking an ear training course for bass guitar, and this is one of the things it teaches you to do. I have been passionate about music since the 1970s and you already much better than I am in noticing all these details.

We oldsters can tell you that the original Rumours didn’t have Silver Springs on it. Which I call the Stalker Song... There wasn’t room on the vinyl for such a long song, and everyone but a very angry Stevie wanted to keep it off. Some felt the sound didn’t fit in with the rest of Rumours. They offered to include her vocal duet with Lindsay on I Don’t Want to Know as a consolation prize. And the record already had Stevie’s Gold Dust Woman, which is almost 5 minutes long. I think she got a fair shake from the band, FWIW. It’s a beautiful, heartbreaking song, with a very rough, raw ending, one of their classics, in any case. Silver Spring’s lyrics were actually VERY current with the breakup of Lindsay and Stevie at that time. The Chain and Dreams came from the same troubles. And Go Your Own Way was Lindsay’s take on it all. You have to credit Lindsay for adding great guitars and vocals to a song that made him out to be the villain. And then he had to sing it with Stevie in concert knowing that !

I like when you comment on the vocals. The instrumentation and production are excellent on this album, but in my opinion it's the vocals that make it exceptional. So much feeling and expression.

Glad you are discovering Fleetwood Mac. They are an exceptionally old band and have been around since the mid-60s and many iterations The most popular of which was the Anglo American combination of the 70s and 80s. They do have some good songs from the earlier period as well that you might be interested in with American lead singer Bob Welch.

On Silver Spring, you were right about it being a guitar, the sort of accordion fade-in sound. The guitarist was likely using a volume pedal or the knobs on the guitar, played a chord at no volume, then slowly turned it up. It's a great effect.

I don't think anyone would be upset if you went ahead and did all the Fleetwood Mac Albums from this era, and there's a lot to listen to: "Fleetwood Mac" from 1975, "Tusk" from 1979, "Mirage" from 1982, "Tango in the Night" from 1987, "Say You Will" from 2003.

‘You Make Loving Fun’ (my favourite song on Rumours) is track 8 and follows ‘The Chain’ in the original running order of the album. On the original LP vinyl album release; it is the second track on side two.

For more of that western feel + great harmonies + great guitars, I really recommend the album DESPERADO (1973) by EAGLES. The whole album is like one connected cowboy story with lots of recurring themes, and brilliant writing and playing. I think you'd like it.

The 'screaming' at the end of Gold Dust Woman is actually a guitar. For years, I thought it was Stevie's vocals until I saw a documentary about the making of Rumours.

Gold Dust Woman, is one of my all-time favorites, mind you, I have so many all-time favorites and if I had to choose one song above all, I would not be able to decide which would fill that place. Just too much fantastic music out there from classical, all the way thought to folk music. All the best.

I watched the whole thing. That was fun. As a musician, I enjoy your analysis of things. And pulling out the comic book or graphic novel or whatever to make a point was hilarious. But now I really love how much you feel all of the music and notice every little thing.

Can't help myself... You Make Loving Fun's funky groove is achieved by the interaction of the bass guitar and the clavinette.

The banjo sound you're hearing on "The Chain" is actually a dobro guitar.

Christine was working really hard on that funky keyboard and singing at the same time.

"Accordion" in English. But those really sound like volume swells on the guitar to me. It's kind of an art unto itself and its highly useful. You basically start with the volume knob all the way down and you rest your pinky finger on it and then you do whatever it is you're going to do on the guitar, hit a note or a chord or even bend a string to get haunting bird-like echo effects. But then you strike the strings and then right after you strike them you use your pinky finger to roll the volume knob up and you create this immediate volume swell that you have complete control over and it makes it sound like a completely different instrument. It's really fun. There are many classic examples of this but one of my absolute favorites is in the Rush song La Villa Strangiato, and it is how Alex Lifeson opens the first of two iconic guitar solos on that masterpiece instrumental from the album Hemispheres. Adrian Belew made really creative use of them as well.

Just now saw this & enjoy your reaction. As has been said many times, "Silver Springs" wasn't on here & "You Make Loving Fun" comes on after "The Chain". "Silver Springs" is a great song, but listening to the entirety of the album in the way it was originally released & how most humans have experienced & know it, the form in which it won so many awards, is worth it. The song order does matter & there's a balance of dark & light. It's one of the rare albums in which every song is good & works together as a cohesive whole, which you can put on & just let it play the whole way through, without skipping songs. I'm sure you'll be listening to the album from here on out, if you're like the millions of people who've been doing so since it came out! Great art never dies. I always go back to it one way or another my whole life, even though I've heard it a million times & know it like the back of my hand.

The BBC used the latter part of The Chain, where the heavy bass line comes in, for the theme tune for their Formula 1 racing on TV. It has such a racy feel to it and a thrill that gets adrenalin going. Oh Daddy is a wonderful song sung by Christine McVie and John Mvcie's bass line is really exceptional.

Your interpretation of "The Chain" is most interesting. What i hear is the drums simulating a heartbeat. The song is one of several on the album about the break up between singer Stevie Nicks and guitarist Lindsay Buckingham who had been a couple for some time. "Damn your love, damn your lies" is pretty clear. So the heartbeat I hear signifies a broken heart.

"News of the World" by Queen. I know you've heard "We Will Rock You". _EVERYBODY_ has. You'd really have to be living under the proverbial rock if you haven't, and you don't look like a rock dweller,🤣 so....anyway, the rest of the album is fan-bleeping-tastic. 2. "Moving Pictures" by Rush. Probably my all-time favorite album. 3 of the best musicians at their chosen instrument. Geddy Lee on bass. Neil Peart on drums and Alex Lifeson on guitar. 3. "Boston" by Boston (of course) _THE_ best debut album ever.(IMO) 4. "Van Halen" by you guessed it, Van Halen. Another incredible debut album. BTW, if you love great harmonies, you'd love the Eagles. They sound just as good live, like Fleetwood Mac does, as they do in studio. Check out "7 Bridges Road" and you'll see (or hear👂) what I mean.

Ha! it is accordion in English as well. That sound is the guitar - it sounds like he's using a slide, especially later in the song (the wave sound). The beginning of Silver Spring is all guitar and bass then a piano comes in. Lindsey plays a very unusual guitar in that it's part acoustic/part electric, so he can make a lot of different sounds with it. Something to understand about Fleetwood Mac is there are 3 main songwriters: Christine McVie, who plays keyboards/piano; Stevie Nicks, who is primarily a vocalist; and Lindsey Buckingham on guitar, and as far as I know, they always sang their own compositions. When they joined the band, Stevie and Lindsey were a couple, as were Christine and John McVie (bass). So if Stevie is on vocals, it's going to have a lot more guitar, as will Lindsey's songs, but if Christine is singing, it will be a lot of keyboard/piano with some guitar mixed in. To the best of my knowledge they didn't use any guest musicians or unusual instruments on these early albums. Later on they would bring touring musicians to fill in the parts that were overdubbed in the studio (multiple guitar tracks, for example). Just to add: Lindsey arranged all of their songs in the studio, so they always had guitars pretty prominent in the mix - Oh Daddy is a great example.

I love how you love this album. I did actually react to this the same way when I first listened to it. I just had to relisten to all the parts again and again. You clearly have fun listening to all those albums. Another flawless album you should check out is "Never For Ever" by Kate Bush. She is so weird and strange and the band that plays in her songs uses so many rare and cool instruments that I promise you it's something you have never heard. It's really unique. Or maybe an equally great album, but much heavier and something I didn't see anyone on youtube react to so far is "White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity" by SWANS. It's gothic rock with folk influences, so there are a lot of acoustic guitars. The whole album is very dark, but there are a few happy songs on it and also a few calm songs as well. They have a singer with a very deep voice and a female singer with a really beautiful voice, so the album is so good because of the contrasts of light and dark. But it's not for everyone. Think about it like a darker, heavier, wilder version of Foxtrot by Genesis, just with shorter tracks...In fact, every Swans album is different and all are great, but this is comparably easy to listen to if you look at their other work. But I can understand if you don't like it and decide not to react to it.... I also like this format that you listen to whole album sides. That's cool for you, but also for us because we can also see the whole reaction and listen to the whole album. If I might recommend a third album ( I know, many recommendations...) I would recommend you "Dionysus" by Dead Can Dance. It would fit this format perfectly, because the album has two sides, but each side is just one long song - just like Supper's Ready. However, the band doesn't sound like normal rock music at all. I would describe them as fantasy music, like something you would hear in a video game...They're cool and there are many cool instruments to discover. The only thing you shouldn't expect are lyrics. They sing, but they sing in an own invented fantasy language, so no-one can understand what they sing. It's beautiful still.

Accordion is pronounced pretty much the same in England/America, but it sounds SO much better in French! 💖

This is, in my opinion, the greatest album made. Not a bad song on it. Most bands are lucky to have one good singer. These guys had three. I loved seeing your reaction and how moved you were by what you heard. Forty years after my first listening, I still get chills.

I just want to say that I really enjoyed listening to both sides of this album with you. I also pull up the lyrics on another tab while I listen to music because I often don't hear them correctly. Sometimes, though, what I hear is funnier than what's being sung. 😃

In ‘The Chain’, that is not a banjo in the left channel; but rather, a dobro or wood-bodied, single-cone resonator guitar played by Lindsey Buckingham, which sounds brighter and more percussive than a regular acoustic guitar.

Rumours is one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time. There's no filler on it; every song is good enough to have been released as a single, and you hear all of them on the radio to this day. That said, it's amazing the band was able to put this album together, given that the inspiration for most of these songs were things that would have had other people at each other's throats. Seriously, it's incredible they were able to cohere as a band, given how dysfunctional their personal relationships were. When you learn what the inspiration for some of these songs were, you wonder that they didn't quit the band and cut the other members out of their lives. "You Make Loving Fun," is a song Christine McVie wrote about an an extramarital lover she had, cheating on her husband, bassist John McVie, and "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow" was her telling him "I'm leaving you, get over it." "I Don't Want to Know," and "Silver Springs" were Stevie Nicks' songs about being unable to maintain a healthy relationship with her then-lover Lindsey Buckingham, and "Go Your Own Way" was his song about being unable to do it with her. "Never Going Back Again," was Buckingham's ode to a regretful rebound hookup after he and Nicks finally broke it off for good. The band members may have emotionally damaged each other in ways that are mind-boggling to most people, but they sure did manage to produce some great art from all of it.

Fun fact, the guitar solo at the end of The Chain was used as the programme music for British TV coverage of Formula 1 motor racing.

Saw them live in concert in 1972 Along with Deep Purple and ELF. What a concert that was.
