GFR railroad is the only band to prove it out rocked Led Zepplin . GFR was kicked off of the tour because they were getting more curtain calls than LZ and they got jealous. True story.

"Grand" describes the scale of their music. "Funk" describes their sound. "Railroad" is giving you fair warning that you're about to get hit, head-on by a runaway train.

Only 2 bands ever played Shea stadium (home of the New York Mets). The Beatles and Grand Funk. The city of New York banned all concerts at Shea after the Railroad. The crowd was jumping up and down so much that the entire stadium started to oscillate. The fire Marshall almost closed the concert down. The Beatles sold out just over 2 weeks. GFR sold out in 72 hours.

Unfortunately Mel and Don tricked Mark into signing off on his share of the band and then kicked him out. Don and Mel are using the name Grand Funk Railroad for what is mostly a tribute band now. Mark is performing on his own yet. The drummer is the vocalist on We're An American Band, definitely one to check out. Watch their live performances, nobody was higher energy than GFR! In many concerts, Mark has his shirt off, Mel, the bass player said it was funny. Mark would remove his shirt and then the women in the audience would start removing theirs! I grew up in Toledo, and we would hitchhike weekly to either Detroit or Ann Arbor to catch the bands. Saw GFR many times, Bob Seger, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop & The Stooges just to name a few. Yup I saw them in 1971 after the Live album came out in 1970. The lyrics are altered on this version, as the original was about revenge on a narc "can't keep that rat from me." Mel's bass slide really made this work, and the song, "Into the Sun" (as heard on the live album) provoked a near riot as attendees grooved on something they'd never heard before.

I'll tell you one chick who had the hots for Mark was Janis Joplin! She was always turning up at their gigs back in the day. Mark and Janis might have been an item if she lived long enough

Girl! I ain't sure you would have survived them days! You'd have been one of them girls that just got so into it at the concert that she just sort of rose up to the sky and went away.. never to be seen again. I've seen it happen with my own eyes! 😎

There was a saying back in the 70s, "If you can't play it live you can't play it at all" You either had talent or you didn't. GFR definitely did.

You can't go wrong with GFR. Tight hard-working funky band. Great vocals great drum great bass. Best three piece band of the 60s. Thanks for playing them girl. They're great just like you.
