This not a hate comment towards you guys but you really should do research before you listen to Lana del Rey because her music is very personal so it will be very hard to comprehend if you don’t know nothing about her so I’m gonna try to explain her to you guys in the easiest way I can. Lana’s sound is very melancholic, James Bond, Americana, and old school. She has done many genres Pop,hip pop, rock, rap, country, jazz she is classified as alternative but recently she announced that she is fully doing country and has been working on a new album coming out this September for four years in between those 4 years she has come out with 3 albums. Her sound can be very boring it can make you fall asleep if she’s not your type of music so I understand how you guys may get bored with this album since you guys aren’t fans at all but they’re popular for a reason because a lot of artist have said and mentioned Lana as she changed pop in the 2010s when she came out with her debut album “Born to die” a lot of people wanted to write like her because it was such tragic topics but written beautifully so she has influenced A LOT of artist in the industry. Lana is also a poet. Also Lana writes a lot about love, heart break and death because her life wasn’t the most healthy childhood , her mom was VERY abusive towards and cause of that Lana became an Addict, Alcoholic and smoker at the young age of 14 ( she celebrated 20 years of being sober really recently) she also loves her father a lot even tho she has mentioned in her music that she wished her father did more to protect her against her mothers anger ( they also call him the first nepo daddy since he makes music and is famous because of Lana). This is just like a tiny bit of how traumatic her childhood was, so Lana writes a lot about her own experience in her music dealing with drugs, alcohol, abusive relationships and just overall horrible experiences that she had been through and a lot of woman or even men relate to them. She also has very uplifting music in her album like in “Lust For Life” made in 2017 her last 3 songs heroin, change and get free are like a trilogy of tragedy with drugs then changing your ways and then getting free and living your own life being clean. She has made 9 albums so far Born to die (2012), Born to die-the paradise edition(2013), Ultraviolence (2014), Honeymoon (2015), Lust for life (2017), Norman fucking Rockwell (2019), Chemtrails over the country club (2021), Blue Banisters (2021) and Did you know that there’s a tunnel under ocean Blvd (2023) and a upcoming country album named “Lasso” coming out this September 2024. The album that you guys reacted to is one of her most popular ones because it talks about a lot of things that woman go through. Cruel world opens the album by telling what this album will be mainly about. The meaning behind this song is is her being with this famous guy who has a lot of conflicts having a bunch of woman and drugs and when she was younger she liked it because he was crazy for her but now she realizes that it’s not something she wants. Ultraviolence is about her own personal experience with an abusive controlling relationship the guy she talks about in this song is a cult leader who she met in New York and she let him do things to get hit her abuse her and much more that’s why in the song she js crazy for him but at the end she leaves him. Shades of cool is a song about an unfixable man that she wants to understand and fix but she can’t . Brooklyn baby is a love song about her boyfriend at the time but also poking fun at hipsters from Brooklyn but also she named the song Brooklyn baby because she was supposed to collab with this huge rock Artist but when she arrived to New York to make the song he passed away the same day. West coast is a melancholic love song about woman torn between love and ambition, and as a dedication to the West Coast of the United States. Sad girl,Lana has said that she wrote the song because she’s “still sometimes a sad girl,” since she’s trying to fight things that are out of her control. “Sad Girl” is primarily about her doing things that she wants over things she should. Pretty when you cry a heartbreaking declaration of how someone’s love can make them stronger, despite all the pain they endure. The song expresses the bittersweet beauty in leaving behind someone who can no longer offer the expected affection and loyalty. The lyrics also reflect on the natural beauty in sadness, as the narrator expresses that she feels "pretty when I cry." Money powers glory is a sarcastic response song she said “I learned that whatever I did elicited an opposite response, so I’m sure ‘Money Power Glory’ will actually resonate with people as being what I really do want. I already know what’s coming, so it’s okay to explore irony and bitterness". Fucked my way up to the top isn’t about her fucking her way up to the music industry to success its kinda mocking making fun of the men and many articles that were saying she’s an industry plan or that she fucked her way up to the top she is just saying fuck you to them . Old money for Lana was a nostalgic song for her old Hollywood it’s actually her oldest song she says cause she had been working on it for 5 years. The other woman is a cover song which fits the albums theme and one of her best covers besides “doin time” in 2019. Black beauty describes the various dark moods of Lana’s lover, and the helplessness she feels at being unable to change him. While she tries to conform to his many shades of black, she can’t help but feel scared and shadowed herself. Guns and roses is a song of her just reflecting on her last lovers that’s why she has lyrics of him taking his bike to Detroit he loves heavy metal it’s a song just remembering her past lovers that’s why she repeats a lot of the lyrics. Florida kilos is a song inspired by a documentary that she saw that spoke an about cocaine traffickers in Miami. She also said “ I attract those who use illegal methods to get what they want. When I was a kid I thought I had the right to have whatever I wanted at any cost. I like the idea of getting to the top with your method, [whether] it is legal or illegal.” I do feel like yall gave her a lot of shit but I can see why because you guys really don’t know anything about her and you guys didn’t really get the album so I see how you guys don’t like the album but hopefully you guys can see if differently later on if yall re listen to the album since I gave yall small history of her and the meanings of each song. She also didn’t glorify abusive relationships in ultraviolence she stated it many times before. But I do feel like you guys do need to give her another chance by listening to born to die since it’s her debut album and it’s more pop and hip hop influenced or maybe lust for life since it has collabs with The Weeknd, play boy carti and asap rocky. And maybe you guys will see why she is really famous and has a huge fan base and a big influence in the music industry. She also reference blue a lot since it’s consider a sad color. Also when making this album her record wasn’t sure if they would allow Lana to release this album since they weren’t sure if it was perfect so they asked one of the biggest producers in the music industry who has worked with Adele and they made him listen to the album and he said the whole album was pure perfection so with that they let her release it. Also she did spend time in Spain when her mom sent her there to stay cause of “issues” Lana had so she can understand Spanish and speak it a little bit. Btw her music is the type that you have to pay attention to the lyrics like actually pay attention to the lyrics they are the biggest part of her music. Also I feel like your guys comments In this video were very childish and insulting towards Lana. So maybe next time do research or at least look up the meaning of the song before listening to it so you get an idea of what this song will be about. Also my bad if my grammar and punctuation wasn’t good at all or even there KZfaq crashed on me writing this comment 2 times 💀

Glad I read this before pressing play...on to a different reaction video because I don't want to hear people laughing at her and saying it's boring. Like if it's way past their comprehension just say that instead of insulting her. I'm more than happy to hear others say they don't like particular music and that's fine I don't like everything I hear too but I just can't get behind this. Thanks for commenting and explaining Lana to all. 💜

When she says “he hit me and it felt like a kiss,” I don’t think she’s glorifying the abuse. Abusive relationships are complex and the reason people stay in them isn’t because they’re stupid or something, it’s usually because the self-esteem of the person who is getting abused is usually really low and they feel as if the fact that the abuser is putting energy into abusing, actually staying, or showing such intense emotion for them is because they’re valuable of SOMETHING instead of nothing. I think it’s more of a perspective of “at least he cares.” Another reason is people who attract abusers have usually had childhood trauma and it influences the way they view “love.” For example, if someone was physically abused as a child, they’re more likely to find comfort in getting physically abused in relationships if they’re not properly healed. Lana’s lyrics are deeply complex and you could stir up a whole essay on each line.

Take your time with each album. Don't feel like you have to rush these reactions out. The longer it sits with you and the more you listen, the more you'll hear and you'll always find things you missed before, things start to click and things start making more sense, in the music, and in life in general 🤯😅 I think her music can be really exhausting and draining if you try taking it all in too quickly. I've had the pleasure of discovering her back in 2012, the first song that i ever heard by her was Gods and Monsters .. and i had just moved to Long Beach Cali from Pennsylvania and it was just a very therapeutic journey, to say the least. Honeymoon was my first vinyl purchase. NFR may be my favorite album of all time. Every album has eventually taken top tier status over most projects I've heard, for one reason or another. Her music's just different, in an appreciated way, and I'm really excited to hear your opinions on each body of work .. the Paradise EP is excellence as well, and that should include the short film, Tropico, which includes 3 songs, Body Electric, Gods and Monsters and Bel Air. I sing the body electric, a poem by Walt Whitman, Gods and Monsters opening line of "LA, LA. LA, LA In a land of Gods and monsters, i was an Angel" singing of Los Angeles and her time there at the time. And Bel Air, imagine being at Hell's gate, and then rushing to your idea of what Heaven would be like, hearing kids laughing and finally ending that EP in that Heavenly state .. before moving into the next body of work, which was this one that you just reacted to ! What a journey .. what a journey, indeed. ✌️

Lana’s music has changed a lot in the past ten years musically and especially lyrically, if you don’t like ultraviolence you’d definitely like her newer music, she talks about more personal subjects now like family, and her music now is ALOT more stripped back and has way less reverb and effects, similar to mitskis most recent album

I'm shocked Ultraviolence beat out Born To Die as most popular album on Spotify. BTD has to be her most mainstream album and Norman Fucking Rockwell is the most critically acclaimed. BTD is still trending on the billboard top 200 (520 weeks/10 years). Like other people have mentioned, Ultraviolence is not the album I would normally introduce Lana, especially if the listener leans more into hip hop. Each album has its own vibe, this one in particular is considered her classic rock era and has the most reverb of all so I get it. (I can see some of the similarities with Garbage too) As far as message goes, you guys definitely didn't scracth the surface. It is easy to think that the songs simply glorify abuse when the writing isn't deeply analyze but I don't expect everyone to do that on a first listen. Those who have been listening for a long time know it is not a glorification, it is a WARNING. She has dealt with alcohol and drug abuse, mommy issues, toxic relationships so her music is going to reflect that and the feelings at the moment and time when going through it. Lana is more of a poetic songwriter which provide layers to her music but at the same time makes it harder to interpret and digest. Not to mention that Lana is not even trying to appeal to a mainstream audience (Her immediate mainstream sucess coming off her first album was a shock even to her). She did change the pop landscape and I think if you explore her first album, Born To Die, you'll see how big of an influence she is to todays pop girlies like Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo even bigger names like Taylor Swift. There is also alot of sarcasm in this album which you obviously missed by not knowing much about her. 'Brooklyn Baby' and 'Money Power Glory' are sarcastic and are doubling down on the image/trope critics tried to pin her as. Even 'Fucked My Way Up to the Top' isn't really about her having sex to get to the top, it's a response to another female singer who was talking trash about her (Many fans believe its Lorde). Of course I don't expect you to know any of this. One last thing, on 'Black Beauty' Lana mentions the Spanish women because she changed her physical appearance to fit more to what the guy liked which is Spanish looking women. I think Primo missed the first few lines of the song and infer the wrong thing out of it. I'm latina too by the way and I would of had that sus look too if I didn't catch the beginning 😂

WHEN YOU SAID PRETTY WHEN YOU CRY CAN BE POWERFUL IN A LIVE PERFORMANCE, I INSTANTLY THOUGHT ABOUT HER RECENT CONCERT IN MEXICO AND SHE SANG THAT SONG, AND WHEN IT GOT CLOSER TO THE ENDING GUITAR AND VOCALS, THE ENTIRE CROWD WAS PUSHED BACK. PEOPLE ARE CLAIMING SHES A DEMON AND ALL KINDS OF CRAZY SHIT. im ngl the video is very strange, im not religious but it does give me goose bumps. Anyways she did confirm practicing witchcraft before but like, i think i like her more because of it.

I have been a Lana fan for little over a decade and I appreciate the honesty :) UV is in my top three but I can see it being the hardest album to digest by her. Also I feel like it is stylistically niche, so it won't be for everyone. But its poetically deep and musically complex in my opinion. She touched on some rare topics in music with her own perspective which makes this album very unique. This was also the era of EDM songs while she was out there mixing psychedelic rock with pop elements. I find it very bold. I recommend NFR, LFL and Ocean Blvd., in this order. Then the rest. I'd like to point out few things: The Other Woman is a Nina Simone cover but she is a die-hard fan of Billie Holiday too, she has both their names tattooed. And Ultraviolence as a song is very vulnerable, I don't think art has to be morally ideal. She is just narrating her experience with violent past relationships and its just raw and real. I never had thought she is glamorizing toxic relationships.

It’s funny you mention The Weeknd because he actually did a feature on Money power Glory but it was never officially released. But you can find it on KZfaq . The Weeknd and Lana have collaborated numerous times over the last decade. He said that she’s the embodiment of the girls he sings about in songs. And they sound great together. Check out Lust for Life and Stargirl.

the guitar solo, in my opinion, is suppose to be clashing with everything, particularly her lyrics getting drowned down by the aggressive guitar. it's suppose to feel like how you are in a toxic relationship-trying your best to talk to your partner but you'd just get ignored and drowned out.

Not trying to hate on you guys bcs everyone is entitled to their own opinion and music is subjective and I actually enjoyed the video of reacting to something I like but I don’t think she’s glorifying abuse, she’s talking about her experience and that’s valid bcs music has no rules, just how some rappers talk about drugs and murder, some other artists talk about explicit sex and sexuality. I mean to each their own but just dropping my two cents:) and I actually like the heavy reverb because it’s meant to be like an experience, like your high on psychedelics or at least that’s how I see it. Anyway I love this álbum and cheers to your reaction lol

"Getting beat n u liking it the way its written you're glorifying it! 🤦" This was a good video. Shows you where her early critics came from. When you're enjoying Lana and you wonder wow her early critics how are they having such a different experience and getting all annoyed. This is helpful to see that. Teaches you people expect to listen to stories they resonate w n understand, same thing w sonics. It's not wrong to want her stories to sound different and her songs to sound more catchy. Be more like the others. I would definitely feel that way if I started listening to her today, boring stories boring music why so edgy, too different.

@@dylancook8863 she's had a pretty sucky life and irl she's actually a bit of a goof, when u watch her interaction or real life personality. She's pretty shy too u can see the difference between her early interviews and recent ones. She gets stage fright in bigger shows, but sometimes u stumble on a live performance and ure like wow how can it be this good live(Heartshaped Box Nirvana cover). Her stories are autobiographical and her writing is so good and the candid stories are always entertaining n a lot of the times can be beautiful. She's mentioned she's a poet first singer second because she can struggle w confidence in her lives I guess(the actual quote is funny) She's also creative, she's mentioned she usually comes up w the melodies herself and her sounds between albums are so explorative and different. This was such a cool reverby psychedelic rock where the album before was hiphop inspired, she's a fan of all the genres basically(she's mentioned artists of different genres when asked about her idols like Bob Dylan Eminem Joan Baez) Oh and her visuals she's super creative with her visions for her music video, she's always able to create such a soundscape in her songs, and her music videos are no different. Watch National Anthem where it was a time she was close with A$AP ROCKY

We read you loud and clear, I will be more mindful of the context of the lyrics the next listen through. I just didn’t understand what she was trying to convey with the line, “he hit me and it felt like a kiss” I admit I got hung up on that line the whole time because a kiss is something that most people would enjoy. But Glad you found value in our genuine reaction to this album. -Rico
