This was our theme song during the Gulf War, with Delta co. 12th Engineer Battalion, out of Dexheim, (Devil's Home), Germany. We had four armored personnel carriers in our platoon that all had the names of Metallica songs painted on the sides. There was "Creeping Death", "Seek and Destroy", "Metal Militia" and honestly, I can't remember the last one, but I think it was "Damage Inc". We all made it back home, but we are still just empty shells.

This was released in 1986, an era of music which was all about girls and partying and falling in love... This was when hit songs were 'Take on me' (A-ha)... 'Home sweet home' (Motley Crue)... 'One more night' (Phil Collins)... 'The power of love' (Huey Lewis)... 'Be good to yourself' (Journey)... etc. In the middle of this, Metallica's 'Master of Puppets' drops... and it's the antithesis of everything that was popular that year. Shredding guitarz... slamming drums... lyrics about insanity, death and chaos... They made Ozzy Osbourne look tame by comparison as they opened his tour that year... Bon Jovi, Kiss, Europe, Dokken, Van Halen, and Journey ruled radio and MTV... Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, and Dio were the heavy metal stars... but Metallica conquered all in the underground w/ thrash metal and bands like Megadeth, Exodus, Slayer, Anthrax, etc. coming behind them... Soon, the hard rock and metal bands dominated the 80's and pushed keyboard bands like Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, Talk Talk, and A-ha, out of commercial popularity.

The mixture of aggression, heaviness and cold, machine-like precision in the music, combined with Hetfield’s angry, bitter, shouty vocals, perfectly matches the lyrics of this song. “You will die, when I say, you must die.” And it ain’t nothing personal. You mean nothing aside from your performance on the battlefield. Kill or be killed. That’s the true nature of war. Mad respect to Metallica for not sugarcoating any of the horrors.

14:07: For me that song was Battery by Metallica back in 1996 or 1997. I was 11 years old and had only heard Load and the Black album at that point. I had an old boombox for a cassette player at the time. The album cover of Master of Puppets looked really cool, so I eventually bought it when I had the money. Of course the first song is Battery...it changed my life in a way that not too many other things have since then. Having never even heard of the existence of an aggressive style of music like thrash, it just about tore my head off. I'll never forget hearing that song for the first time, let alone the rest of the album. I was completely shellshocked, at the time, I had no idea music like that even existed. I was raised semi-religious and was questioning if I should have even been listening to that type of music...but that all changed! I started thinking for myself, and over time I started really getting into thrash metal. And also that album is directly responsible for me learning to play guitar.

The life changing music moment for me was when my cousin Rob played me Iron Maiden's "Piece Of Mind" album in 1984

This is an amazing song. I think the first Metallica (and thus Metal) song I ever heard was Sad But True. Heard it on a road trip in 95 and when I got home I immediately started searching them out.. completely changed my musical tastes forever.

Song that changed my life..... RUSH - Xanadu live 1981 Exit Stage Left album. I was WAY into all kinds of music and becoming a budding musician. But hearing that live album brought it all to a new level.

Ironically, this was that song for me. This was the first Metallica song I ever heard, back in 1986. It was the coolest thing I'd ever heard in my life, and Metallica's been my favorite band from that day forward.

As a 16, 17 year old hardcore Metallica fan back in the early 2000's One and Fade to Black were always my favourite Metallica songs ... Now, today as a 37 year old, not even that much of a metal fan.. But still have been coming back to some of the metal music from my past. Disposable Heroes has been my favourite song these last 10 years or so. Like you said. It is a masterpiece. The message in the song hits right there for me, also the composition of the lyrics, the words are like they are ingrained in stone, they feel that perfect. And ofcourse the last and not the least. the guitars, those riffs and the build of the song. Even those subtle things like this minimal bass fill Cliff comes with when Lars comes in with the drums. And the drum grove is perfect especially in the intro galloping riff before James comes in with the vocals .. And the guitar solo is insane. Everything is just in its right place.

Bless you! You had many great throughs. 14:15 As for your question :) I don't know, there are too many songs that changed myself. To Metallica I first listened decades ago. But I think Master of Puppets really had the effect on me. I reminded the album and listened to it 10 times in a row. But surprisingly enough, even before I started "from the beginning", I happened to love a few Death Metal and Black Metal bands. Therefore, one of the first Metal songs that switched something in my head was Amon Amarth - Legend of a Banished Man.
