Agreed! Of course Nothing Else Matters get it’s praise (as it should), but songs like Of Wolf and Man, Through the Never, The God That Failed, and My Friend of Misery never get played on setlists anymore. I got to see My Friend of Misery played live recently and it one of my fav songs of the night. Crowd participation with that song is incredible!

This is Jason Newsted's second writing credit with Metallica since this song was originally going to be an instrumental. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d5uKZbGQzdnPhp8.html This song is about an outsider view of someone wandering in self-pity and having a very pessimistic view of the rest of the world. The lower notes that you heard was Jason Newsted on bass during the intro as well as the middle section with the guitar swells. The later half of this album after "Nothing Else Matters" has really great deep cuts that don't get the recognition that they deserve to be honest. Also, you were hearing guitar harmonies from James and Kirk before Kirk's guitar solo. You've reacted to Iron Maiden before which popularized the guitar harmonies.
@shanomac69

That instrumental, the solo and the instrumental afterwards was just a killer SHRED session by KIRK "THE RIPPER" HAMMETT!!! The guitar wailing as if someone was in agony and a little shades of Jimmy Hendrix style thrown in there for good measure, just wickedly creative. Great song and great reaction my lady, please keep 'em coming, you're doing a FANTASTIC job of breaking down some of the greatest classic Metallica tunes🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Jason Newsted (now ex-Metallica bassist) said he came up w/ 'My friend of misery' on bass hoping that it would be the next Metallica instrumental... I think it started that way, but then James Hetfield came up w/ a vocal melody... and then lyrics. Before he joined Metallica, Newsted was the main songwriter for his Arizona metal band Flotsam & Jetsam... he wrote the bulk of music and lyrics for their 1986 debut album 'Doomsday for the deceiver'... When he joined Metallica in late 1986 after the death of bassist Cliff Burton, he had the skills, energy and stage presence... and he could write songs, so it seemed like a 'dream gig' for him. The problem was that Metallica was grieving over their loss of Cliff Burton... and Jason Newsted became the focus of their grief and anger, thus subjecting him to drunken hazing on tour for months on end. They did record a few covers for the 'Garage days' EP in 1987 and it sounded great... but when they started work on 'And justice for all'... Newsted was shafted creatively... Only 1 contribution was used for the track 'Blackened'... Newsted recalled jamming w/ Hetfield for hours on ideas for songs at his home... but in the studio, his ideas and opinions were mostly dismissed. Adding insult to injury, Lars Ulrich (drums) demanded that Newsted's bass tracks be faded out completely (Newsted was livid when he heard the final mix of the album). With the 'black' album, producer Bob Rock insisted that the bass be featured on the album... but that was it. The infighting within Metallica during the sessions got worse and Newsted found his ideas being rejected once again... his only contribution was 'My friend of misery'... Lars was adamant without speaking out loud: He and James had founded the band, and w/ Kirk Hammett were the creative team in Metallica... Newsted was just the hired hand. Jason Newsted stayed loyal to Metallica and made million$ w/ their success... but in the studio, he was shut out of the creative process once again for the 1995/ '96 sessions for 'Load/ Reload'... His bass was featured, but his only other contribution was a sub-par track 'Where the wild things are'... He felt that 'Load' was a misstep and Metallica was not musically delivering the product that he felt they could deliver. He wanted metal bands to open for Metallica and was disappointed when artists like Kid Rock and Local H were picked to open their concerts. In 2000, Newsted had a number of projects he had recorded in his home studio... one was a jazz rock project called Echobrain. He approached Metallica about putting it out as a side project, but James Hetfield told him 'No'... That was the last straw for Newsted. He made one last appearance w/ Metallica playing the song 'Fade to black' for TV and disappeared. He said at a later band meeting in early 2001 that Metallica should take a year off... recharge & relax... then come back to work. The band was adamant again: A new studio album was the priority... Jason Newsted finally handed in his resignation. He admitted later that the album recorded after his departure ('St. Anger') was not one he would have put his name on. Newsted joined Canadian metallers Voivod in 2002 and his potential was truly wasted in Metallica - on 3 Voivod records, he truly showed what he was capable of musically... It was a missed opportunity to use his talents, but Metallica has always been James and Lars mainly, and that still hasn't changed to date.

I've (41m) been a Metallica fan since I was 10. This song in particular has always been a favourite. I think you hit the nail on the head about misery and how it's lashing out. With my own experience, I think the lyrics are very deep...misery loves company, these times are sent to try men's souls, but something's wrong with all you see. If you're stuck in a place where the distractions of the world are controlling you, your thoughts, actions and mindset, you need to clear yourself of those distractions. Look at what it can lead to, how much misery takes on, the pain and anguish it leads to. Release yourself of your own misery, make different decisions to the ones that don't serve you, change your mindset on what is causing misery and discover life without it. Hetfield has such an amazing gift for the world. Glad to be part of the family 🤘 Now I'm gonna go and play along to this awesome song
