Dont let the haters fool you, this was Metallicas biggest album. It is fantastic from start to finish. Only thing Metallica sold out is stadiums to this day

Master is the best Metallica album by far. But the Black album had the most commercial success. When the black album 1st came out, I wasn't to into it like their albums up to the black album. After awhile I grew to love it

Its either this, Sandman, Sad But True, Nothing Else Matters or The Unforgiven. But any song on the album is a good choice for best... except Struggle.

Such a powerful line... "The less I have, the more I gain." This song speaks to me on a spiritual level, and makes me think about all of the things a person could learn by seeing the world for themselves.

I never thought it was a sell out album, it was mainly just different shorter songs and slower overall tempo but it has some bangers on there and great songs the whole album overall is pretty great 😄

Everyone sleeps on this song , it is an awesome song. I was in the Army ,just back from Desert Shield/Desert Storm ,when the album came out and you heard it played everywhere !

the first two CDs I ever bought were from a garage sale down the street from our russian neighbors. I spent my allowance and got the Black Album and ...And Justice For All and I fell in love with Metallica. Don't know what made me buy them but I'm glad I did. I was maybe 8 or 9 and they shaped my life with their music.

I love this song from the "Black Album". I love the guitar riff and the solos. The lyrics are interesting from the point of view of the artists' feelings as they feel like "nomads" who travel far from home every year to work. Jason Newsted was very important in the concerts during this time, and his participation in the album was very notable.

The Black album is not a sellout album. It was where they were at during that time period. I saw them during this tour. No opening act. Just Metallica performing most of their entire discography. It was amazing! They played almost everything from Killem All to the Black Album. They had a special section called the snake pit. It was in the center and the stage surrounded it. Epic!

This song was about touring and life on the road. They actually had the world record for the longest "tour" if you will. It was roughly 2yrs without going home.

The songs that help me the most are the precisely the Black Album ones, because in my opinion they bring up the most common issues an average person experiences in their lifetime, like so far: - Anxiety and fatefulness (Sad But True) - Pride and arrogance (Holier Than Thou) - Independence but Loneliness (Wherever I May Roam) There are many more songs with equally important subjects in this album, there is even one you're definitely going to enjoy, since it straight up revolves around religion and I noticed you like these the most 😉

I have never really been in a "dark place" but I have always loved Metallica. I have watched as they have gone through changes and have listened to the babble of the neigh sayers who have called them sellouts and has beens. But the band is still there and doing fine. Going 40+ years now and still attracting new fans like yourself. They are an example of what perseverance and hard work can accomplish. I love all their work and although I only found them in the mid 90's when I was already in my 30's, I can't pass up an opportunity to hear them or watch someone like you react to them. ❤🤍💙

A lot of people hate on Metallica for the black album because it’s more accessible… it’s not thrash. They forget about the fact that it’s an all-time classic hard rock album.

I can't tell you how many times I've listened to this entire album, beginning to end! Sometimes just lying, staring @ the ceiling, sometimes reading a book, sometimes tearing up the roads. This album was like a "comfort zone" for me for quite a while.

You are correct about more or less having to "have been there" to understand the "selling out" thing. And to be honest, it had way more to do with Metallica suddenly becoming popular than any change (slightly less frenetic and more professionally produced) of music style. Up through even the release of Puppets, thrash was still a relatively small sub genre of music. Gaining ground, sure, but still a bit obscure. Young teenagers (of which I was one when early Metallica hit) will anyways consider "their music" to mimic the obscurity they feel is their place in the world as they are growing up and trying to find their place and voice in society. I am sure that kids in the 50's felt the same about Elvis when he started making movies, as did early rap fans in the mid 80's when it became popular in the 90's.

This is one of those ones. Fucking amazing. This album is a gem, some people just think that Metallica was a straight trash band and it has been been such. They just play heavy music. Their music and his lyrics always have that feeling, the loneliness, self-deprecation, just realism, life.

I always loved this song !! years ago i had to travel alot between countries and stay away from home ... it's funny you feel those two vibes (you on the road to do your stuff it feels good the feeling of independence, but after a while you are alone and it stoped feeling that good, sometimes wondering if it was worth the money "the Less i Have the More i gain") amazing song !!! so perfect in the message and in music composition. Regarding the Black Album it's an album from an amazing band, never seen it as a sellout just as new approach to music... not better or worse just new music and enjoy it... When the album came out I was listening to extreme metal and it didn't shock me at all, that it was different, I really liked the music, you either like it or not, that's all.

I was just hitting 9th grade when this album dropped and I loved it then and now. It's awesome from start to finish. I loved their first four albums and the song that helped me in Jr High was Escape (off Ride the Lightning) - "Life is for my own to live my own way". Keep up the good work Lilly!! ❤🤘

The "sellout" crowd is when they went mainstream. Their "worst" album is St. Anger and it's easily my favorite one. It's raw and speaks to what I was going through when it dropped. Fade to Black is my hands down favorite song.

(and I'm a death metal fan! 💀) There is 'raw' ... and then there is 'un-listenable'... and that was 'St. Anger' ('Lulu' was even worse) Metallica works best when James and Lars are focused - they were NOT working properly... Even producer Bob Rock lamented that 'St. Anger' was a winning team that lost the game; it wasn't the product he was aiming for... And the thousands of copies that were sold off or returned proved that point... 'Death magnetic' was what 'St. Anger' should have been.

@@sumonjamal1653True. I don't even count "Lulu" as a Metallica album. That piece of garbage was Lou Reed's pile of sh..e. He wrote the music and the lyrics. Metallica was just his back up band fiddeling around here and there. I hope they'd finally recognise what they've done there.

And like you, I was hooked and wanting more of their music. So, I went back to the beginning and worked my way up to their most recent album. Still love the band to this day🤘

New listeners like you 100% have the right mindset with Metallica, I grew up with them "I'm only 11 years younger than James Hetfield", for a lot of the older fans who only knew word of mouth who Metallica was until One got the first radio play ever , this album was everywhere and inescapable. I know people who claimed to be fans who won/t listen to anything post Cliff Burton. I know people who won't listen to anything from this record through today's 72 seasons . I also know people who honestly thought this was Metallica's debut record. for fans like me who have been listening since 83 this is well deserved success.Metallica strived for with every evolution of their sound and talents.

Fade to black was a song that pretty much saved my life as a teen. No one talked about suicide and I was thinking a lot about it and that song helped me through some dark times!

Nope- diehard fan here and was fortunate to have seen them 3 times; they didn't sell-out. Bands change over time, some more than others. The band gels together more as the years go on and they tend to mellow out as well. Just because the album was insanely popular, doesn't mean they were sell-outs. Maybe it might be a little jealousy from some die-hards that no longer could claim it as their own "underground" band any more. It was, and still is one of their best albums. P.S. Lilly- you are wise beyond your years and have a ton of insight. I enjoy not only your excitement but your analysis as well.

Funny how you can relate to a song. In my 20s I worked in a sheep shearing crew and we traveled the state of Montana from job to job. Pretty much solid from mid February through the end of May. Hotel to hotel. Very nomadic and where I lay my head is home mentality.

'For whom the bell tolls' was probably the song that helped me the most... I loved the aggression of the 'Ride the Lightning' album, but that song was about war... and I felt at the time that I was fighting for my life 😈

This song is really about a drifter who never calls one place his or her home which really fits into Metallica's relentless touring in their past. Metallica played 300 shows over the course of 2 and a half years. James, Kirk, and Lars were going through some tough times during the making of The Black Album.

Fade to black still to this day gives me the chills... 48 years old... Master somehow gives me an up beat .... No leaf clover impressed me immensely.. oh crap that's also almost 25 years old.......... Basically I'm just admitting to myself I'm an old metal head..... with a 15yr old daughter who is finding her own way and I can only help her in her ways

This one and Fade to black are tied for my favorite Metallica song. I actually listen to this at ten in my car right before I so play a sport. Gets me jacked up and ready to let it all out. Btw, old school fans thought they sold out with the black album but I've heard from quite a few and now they realize it was just a progression for them (and they like the whole thing).

Metallica was the first and most successful Thrash metal band, and many of their early fans were fans of that specific genre. Metallica's evolution took them to a more commercially palatable area, though I think it can be argued Metallica moved the bar of what was considered commercially palatable several degrees heavier than what it had been. The black album was so successful Metallica became more of a band for everyone, instead of a gritty fringe band for "true believers". I personally love the self titled Metallica album, but Master of Puppets, Kill'em All, and Ride the Lightening are the albums that spoke to me, and gave me the music I was searching for, before I even knew something was missing.

The next album after the Black Album is probably Metallica's darkest album, at least with the lyrics. Songs like Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn, Until It Sleeps, The house Jack Built and even the country ballad Mama Said deals with some of James most vulnerable lyrics

The reason for them shooting the video in Cincinnati was because it was the first city on the Black album tour. Also show them shooting footage for their Live S*#t Binge & Purge box set. I'm a vast bucket of Metallica knowledge.
