What you have to understand about this album is that "The Wall" is a metaphorical wall around his heart to keep people and things out so he doesn't get hurt. This abum is about building that wall with various things that hurt him over the years like an overbearing mother, a terrible school system, the fear of going to war, etc. You definitely need to listen to this album from start to finish.

This would be the perfect post if the "must" was replaced with something closer to "are doing yourself a disservice if you don't". Although I agree with your sentiment.

I prefer listening to record/disc 2 first. Ending The Wall on “Goodbye Cruel World” seems to fit the story better. And the background music in “Outside the Wall” that flows into “In the Flesh?” is like a hint that the records/discs are in reverse order.

The song is about an overprotective mother and the damage she did to him. She taught him how to start building the Wall to close himself off from anything that might hurt him. The character, Pink, does that over the course of his life and is the theme behind the whole album. The musical tone and the contrast of the lyrics represent his mixed perception of his mother.

I bought this double album masterpiece in 1980 when I was 18 years old. It is basically a story from start to finish. Therefore, when someone not familiair with the content or meaning of The Wall listens to a single song somewhere in the middle it seems totally bizarre. A few of the songs from The Wall became big hits like Comfortably Numb, Hey You, and Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) Since there are actually three versions with the same name in the Albums. I remember back in 1980 when the single Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) was moving up the charts in the US and other countries, I heard on the radio that England (where Pink Floyd is actually from) was trying to ban the song from the radio there because it had improper grammar that 23 school children sang just for the song without permission from the school. The school music teacher on his own brought the 23 school children to the studio and within half an hour Pink Floyd had their rebellious children singing, " We don't need no education. We don't need no thought control. No dark sarcasm in the classroom. Teacher leave them kids alone. "

You obviously got that The Wall is metaphorical for this dude finding his way in the world, dealing with loss, resentment, an overbearing mother, among other themes all explored in different ways on the album. With that said, there is definitely a political undercurrent running throughout the album. War, Fascism, on a literal sense the Berlin Wall (where Roger Waters performed this live after it came down). So you can’t entirely separate the metaphors with some of the literal symbolism. An amazing album to listen to all the way through, with each song telling a piece of the larger story

Roger is part of a generation and a victim of WW2 where many fathers were sent off to war and never returned. His father was killed in Italy and his remains were not recovered. The song reflects Rogers view of his relationship with his mother. You get a much better sense of this in a later documentary that Roger did where he travels the route that led to where his father died in battle. Also Roger lost his grandfather as a result of WW1.

His overprotective mother is just another brick in the metaphoric wall that contributed to have him socially isolated. The songs of the first half of the album are just pointing what contributed to that wall. The second half is his journey trying to get free of it. And one song you I really think you will love musically, feeling and lyrics is High Hopes. Nightwish even covered it :) High hope is part of their last true album, The Division Bell. All the songs have the same theme, communication. Lyrics hit hard.

Sort of a trip -- my older brother passed away in 1982 at the age of 26. We both loved Pink Floyd. He turned me on to "cooler" music around 1970. The music my family and I thought was weird and even scary. But then I heard "Fragile". And "Roundabout." I mean ... I HEARD it. The rest is history. 70's classic rock history.

Like others say, the album tells a story. There are parallels to Mother also being the government. This was released in the post cold war era, so it was very topical with its political commentary at that time. And yes, love Pink Floyd and Eminem. For me the Pulse Concert live recordings are... A must see experience for anyone wanting a feel for what Pink Floyd is. The music, the stage show, Gilmore guitar. I re watch that live show several times a year. It's perfect.

The album is a requiem to the post WW2 era. The wall represents barriers between all facets of life. The particular song “Mother” is a microcosm of how everyone can build walls metaphorically or literally. At the end the child asks, [why did it have to be so…high?] Walls a good when used properly

I absolutely listen to both. I’m a fan of powerful poignant lyrics. I like Ems songs when he is being goofy because they make me laugh, when he is being serious, each bar isn’t a double entendres, it’s maybe a triple and sometimes quadruple. And Floyd’s lyrics , while not containing as many double meanings, they don’t have to, because they know what buttons to push to make you feel sad, hopeful, depressed and joyful all at the same time. Both are artists that make you feel something

Yes to your question. That’s the beauty of music. It’s like a different blanket to put on for whatever life’s weather is hitting you with. Eminem when I’m looking for music to get me amped, or Pink Floyd if I want to think or reminisce. At 47 I have a ton of strong memories - both good and bad - tied to this band who, at least for me, has the most unique sound of any band before or since. But my point before rambling about irrelevant things is most people (at least in my small circle) have a very eclectic taste in music. I’m trying to pass the torch to my daughters everyday.

What you have done is akin to reading a random chapter from a book. With Pink Floyd in general and The Wall in particular, you can enjoy the aural majesty, but the lyrics really are contextual. This is one small part of a much larger story. The Wall was intended to be experienced as a whole. Its is, essentially, a single piece of music with many movements.

It hasn't changed in the last 44 years since this record came out. Still all the same as it's relationship to the world. As far as mama taking care of their baby they may have again been referring to Syd. Who left Pink Floyd, became a recluse and lived with his mom till he died in 2006.

When I grew up in the sixties we had duck and cover drills in grade school in case Russia dropped a nuke on us.That's the bomb.the wall is the Berlin wall.I relate to this song because I remember coming home from school scared to death Russia was going to drop the bomb.

In psychological terms, this is about spousifying a child and smothering him. You REALLY should watch the movie. Utterly brilliant.

Pra curtir Pink Floyd, em primeiro lugar, temos que entender o contexto e o tempo. Essa música é da década de 70, quando tudo era completamente diferente de hoje. Como acho que tudo piorou de lá pra cá, então essa música é atemporal. Abraços do Brasil ❤️

Mother kept him close and at the same time used his nightmares to keep him close.

lol. My dad was never one to share control of the radio dial (rip). So I grew up listening to Floyd, Hendrix, Zeppelin etc. Was born in 78. So my teen years were in the 90s. So like the rest of my generation. I was also listening to everything from Dre to Tool. When music is good, it's just good. Genre is insignificant.

You need to check out the entire Movie, Pink Floyd's "The Wall" to get the entire concept of the story. In 2019 I went to watch the Lazer Show at Harrah's Lake Tahoe Showroom and they didn't play this. We were so bummed. 😭 Happy belated 4/20😁😎

The Wall is a phycological wall, it's the wall we all build. Some just build walls with no windows or doors only to find there is no escape. An overbearing mother is just one of the bricks that makes up the wall here. Movements of our lives make up the bricks that we build our walls with.

You need to hear the whole album to get the full context of this song. After losing his father, dealing with abusive teachers, and an over-protective mother the main character isolates himself (the wall) The rest of the album follows his isolation and mental breakdown.

If you listen to the whole album, the wall is a running theme, but it’s metaphorical for different things throughout one’s life.

The song that chills me out the most is Shine On You Crazy Diamond. But all of their stuff is like a drug to my brain. What sooths me the most is the topics of the songs are always about life. And usually it's about the crappier parts of life. But it feels like they are just saying they understand how it is, how messed up things can be, and you're there, I'm there, they are there or have been there. It's like a musical acknowledgement of how the drudgery of life can really steal your soul, but here's a little of it back. Like they are saying "We know. We KNOW.". BTW, I do not drink or use any form of recreational substances, and I have only ever listened to them sober. They truly have some sort of ASMR that hits parts of my brain in an altering way. Not saying anyone has to do that, just saying that even sober the music alters my conscience a lot. Oh, and I first heard them when Dark Side Of The Moon came out, my father bought it and played it a lot. I was 5. Never stopped listening to them, never tire of them.
