A few years ago, the other judges were talking about how their careers got started. Sir Tom joined in, and let them know he had been making hit records before any of them were born. He then performed "It's Not Unusual." Jennifer Hudson and Will.i.am fanned out so hard that they recorded Jones with their phones.

Great reaction, welcome to the era where artists had a hundred times the talent than many of today, just standing on a stage and performing. Tom Jones had his own variety show in the 1960's....watch a couple of clips. His performances made me hurt even then. How he kept from breaking his neck is a mystery. Oh...my mother was probably one of the most straight laced conservative never even THINK about cheating woman on the planet....but Tom Jones literally made her drip, and I think if she had the chance...well, never mind. He was a major sex symbol in his day.

I saw Tom Jones 5 years straight in Vegas in the early 70s. He had a command of the audience that was excellent. Many times men would say that they were there because their wife/girlfriend was a fan. Upon leaving I'd hear comments like, "We're coming back next year to see Tom (they were on a first name basis now). He was so great in getting the appropriate emotion into each number BETTER than so many other singers. (I include Linda Ronstadt as one of those.) His voice was clear and strong and he knew how to milk each note for the most effect. I'm glad you enjoyed the number. Listen to "Delilah." The lyrics throw you for a loop. Or the C & W "The Green, Green Grass of Home." Maybe you'd like his first hit, "What's New Pussycat." It was the theme for a movie of the same name. (When you have the time take a look at the film itself. It was written by Woody Allen and takes place in Paris.) Here's a few others form Tom Jones to listen to: "With These Hands," "Funny, Familiar, Forgotten Feelings," "Love Me Tonight," "She's a Lady," Enjoy!!!

In that era, and a little later, there was no autotune, most, if not all performances were live, miming was pretty much unheard of, and so, the artists that made it were those that had genuine talent. The likes of Sir Tom Jones, The Righteous Brothers, both of which you've now reacted to, and then also artists like Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Otis Reading, and so on. Personally, I think Sir Tom's voice stands out, along with a few others, in terms of control and power. There aren't many that could compare.
