Uriah Heep is my all-time favourite band. I'm aware I'm in the minority on this one, but there's something about their sound and their relentlessly positive attitude that just makes me happy. Edit: You mentioned the bass. The original bass on this was Gary Thain, a brilliant musician who was tragically electrocuted on stage. He survived, but never played again. For most of the 70s, Heep had three terrific singers in the band. Lead vocal David Byron, organist Ken Hensley, and drummer Lee Kerslake all had wonderful voices.

Gary Thain wasn't the bassist on the original July Morning, and he did play again after being electrocuted. He was sacked in 1975 due to his heroin addiction. He died shortly after in his London flat after overdosing. He originally came from New Zealand.

This is not the original album cut of JULY MORNING. And as you have noticed this tune is clearly inspired by CHILD IN TIME by Deep Purple, the voice is singing a very slow part while the organ goes in three times along, just like in Child in Time, then Byron tries to do the same screams getting high and higher. We called this "a very evident inspiration".

Not saying it's "wrong" but at least July Morning is also not the original version from the 70s, but I think a re-recording from 2009. Then the Line-Up would be Bernie Shaw - vocals Mick Box - guitar, Phil Lanzon - keyboards Trevor Bolder - bass Russell Gilbrook - drums Mick Box is the only one still active in Uriah Heep from the beginning. In the 70s they had some changes (some of them tragic) of bass players, and in the late 70s also vocalists. The main line-up of the early albums would be David Byron - vocals Mick Box - guitar Ken Hensley - keyboards Paul Newton - bass and changing drummers, before they found Lee Kerslake in 1972. That would in parts explain some different sound. Bernie Shaw is strong, but also not getting younger. The late David Byron would be their original voice, together with vocal harmonies of course, and Ken Hensley the orignial organ player. Also, on July Morning there is an additional Keyboard solo by Manfrad Mann, on a very early Synthesizer :D It may sound a bit cheesy today. But (if only for yourself) also listen to the studio version on the Look At Yourself album! (I think most of the time finding out which album a song was on first, and finding that version makes the most sense? If it isn't something special)

I'm a bassplayer and these are my touchstones for quality writing and spacious production that leaves room for the bass player! :D definitely doing it the right way by starting back at the roots of it all. a lot or reactors just see that people have done Slayer's Reign in Blood and leap straight in with that and that's not a sensible plan!! you have to work up to that stuff...

That was great! Fun to see you experience Heep for the first time. Glad you enjoyed them! You’re right, the bass *should* have been mentioned. I’m with you in favoring July Morning of these. I liked all of your comments and enjoyed your enjoyment of “Gypsy” as well It’s a pipe dream but I wish I could be your personal Uriah Heep advisor, HAHAHA. You probably know the feeling, you want the reacter to react to exactly what YOU want her or him to react to. and when you know a band’s full catalog you know there are deep cuts that others aren’t going to suggest but, maybe someday you’ll get to some of them. Keep hope alive. and I understand choosing democracy as a way to approach this. These were all good choices, no problem whatsoever with these. That was an odd version of July Morning... I did think it was the original singer but now I’m not so sure...The replacement guy may just sound a lot like David Byron. But, you got the gist of the song. Original would be best off of “Look at Yourself”. or the live version off of “Uriah Heep Live”, 1973, Black cover with white writing. Come to think of it that’s probably a good way to find the true original, - add in the album title along with the song title in a search. Might work... or maybe also add the word “original“. I will reiterate my top other choices in another comment. Thanks kira for this excellent reaction!

I'd additionally recommend: Bird of Prey, Salisbury (both from Salisbury), Pilgrim (from Sweet Freedom) and then The Hanging Tree (from Firefly) to add something more adult oriented rock.

These old bands usually always told a story in their music ,so it isnt just a bunch of instruments that is banging a tune ,take note of that an really pay attention to what you are listening too ,it will be more interesting to know an help you further down the road ,some members had also branched off of other bands an moved on to form others ,bands also did sequels in their songs to the stories. Also I might add ,be careful on some of the reviews on the older bands if you mention certain band members names ,some have past away an no longer with us as die hard fans can be sensitive! All in all ,have fun with it an good luck as the history of the rock world goes deep an mysterious , an can be magical!...😎

Thank you for reacting to one of my all time favorite bands. I think it is great young people are discovering the music I was enjoying 45 years ago. It gives me hope for the future of music. If you liked that song, you might want to try "Return to Fantasy". Another epic song. Find the studio version. It also has some great bass work from John Wetton and Big Hammond B3 organ with the swirling and screaming Leslie speaker. David Byron defined the vocal sound for what would become Heavy Metal. Keep listening and keep exploring the Uriah Heep music catalog and the other great forgotten bands of the early 70's. Other tracks you might want explore Magicians Birthday, Salisbury, Bird of Prey, High Priestess, Lady in Black, Love Machine, "The entire "Demon and Wizards Album" ENJOY

I'm not that much into Uriah Heep, but still loved the video! :D 70's Scorpions are definitely a good place to go. I like their 80s stuff (not as much, though), but they were amazing in the 70s. And before moving into the 80s, I'd suggest to give Thin Lizzy a spin or two. Phil Lynott was a poet, and a great bass player too! Cowboy Song, Emerald, Opium Trail, Don't Believe a Word... The UFO video was awesome too BTW. You rock, Kira 💪💜

July Morning is a classic - What you listened to was not the original album version which is far superior and contains the famous whiplash guitar moment. Lead singer David Byron was definitely doing Ian Gillan vocals & screams - and if you listen to a track called "Come Away Melinda" you will be convinced that is Gillan. Lol - add a Hammond organ and - well you can see where their influences lay. Please listen to the original July Morning in your own time and see what I mean. I'm surprised noone else noticed you heard a different mix entirely.

Just scrolled through the comments to see if anyone mentions the different version of July Morning... :-) I'm not quite sure what version Kira listened to. It was good but the original is the best. This version was missing something. One of those things was the synthesizer solo at the end of the song. I've always liked that. The original July Morning featured an early use of a Moog synthesizer played by Manfred Mann. Only a few musicians owned one back in 1971. Ken Hensley started to play a synthesizer himself a couple of years later. He was a great keyboard player and wrote some fantastic songs. Many bands from the 1960s and the 1970s had a keyboardist. They mostly played the organ. Some of them started to play other keyboard instruments as well but the organ was a big part of the sound. I also want to mention that the "Deep Purple in Rock" album (their first "heavy" album with Ian Gillan) and the first Uriah Heep album came out at the same time in July 1970. Both of these bands have some similarities of course but still have a unique style of their own. They've written some of the most memorable songs in history. I liked your comment. Take care and enjoy the music.

@@Vimana I do like Kira's posts but with so much jumping through tracks so fast, most people wouldn't pick up on any differences. She should let tracks play all the way through, as there are reaction posts to entire albums, unedited, & tracks longer than 15 minutes, unless they actually pause the track to speak. Kira's enthusiasm is wonderful so lets see more rather than cut & edited so much. Let's enjoy every moment of tracks along with her. That would be so cool.

You really can't leave the 70s without properly listening to KISS. They are an inspiration to many big 80s metal bands as much as Purple and Sabbath were. Cool song would be: Deuce, Strutter, 100,000 Years, Hotter Than Hell, Rock Bottom, She, Detroit Rock City, God of Thunder, Love Gun. And let's stop there 😉.

Hmmmm... Motorhead. Well, I'm guessing most people will say "Ace Of Spades," so I'm gonna recommend: "Overkill" (live version, preferably from "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith) "Bomber," "Iron Fist" (there's an awesome promo video for this one - mostly them on stage) "Stay Clean" (with a bass solo by Lemmy) "The Hammer" (this one is about the drummer - Philthy "Animal" Taylor) "City Kids" (early Motorhead) "Motorhead" (written by Lemmy when he was in Hawkwind)

Uriah Heap always seem to be kind of forgotten to an extent. I've always enjoyed them. So glad to see this reaction! I second those who are saying to react to Scorpions, especially their earlier stuff. "Sails of Charon" for sure. Also would suggest from Scorpions "Holiday", "Yellow Raven", and "Living and Dying".

I don't know what you're listening to here. But this is a very recent version of Uriah Heep. Good as it is its not a patch on the band that originally recorded this song. Go to the Live 73 album and listen to the same song. The reason you love the bass by the way is he's playing the bass lines of the late Gary Thain (New Zealnder) one of the most fluid and musical bass players there's ever been. If you listen to it, remember it's live!
