VoicePlay are the theatrical guys of a capella. They don't always make these "mini musicals" but it is something they do and do well. Eli (say it elly) who you saw first used to sing with rock bands, J.None is the second guy you heard. They are all remarkably versatile, many of them have worked for Disney in the past. I believe Rachel Potter (not a regular member here but a guest? did appear on X Factor. She features in their cover of Moana as well. And some other songs. Geoff is a phenomenon. I could say more but you know it already. He does another of those high to low drops in Queen in Five Minutes. Another of their "mini musicals". Geoff, Layne (beatboxer), and ex-member Earl Elkins Jnr were singing together in middle school. When they formed the group Layne was singing, not the beatboxer, I believe that was Scott Porter (who appears with them in the HALO theme) When Scott left the group and went in to acting, Layne took over as vocal percussion. And yes he does have a lovely voice. And yes, since lockdown perhaps, they do now record seperately then put them together. Either Geoff or Layne do the arrnagements and do the editing, mixing, filming, and everything else, including set arrangeing. They work very hard to bring us these videos.

Loved your reaction. You said Geoff's voice here is "inviting" -- YES! It's a fascinating interpretation of Ursula, very seductive. They also did Moana, and Rachel sang with them on it. It's fabulous. But Rachel has more than the classic Disney princess voice -- take a step further back in time and listen to them do Attention with her. It's a favorite! Listen to their update cover of "If I Were a Rich Man/Girl," Geoff sings lead, you won't be disappointed. Layne and Geoff do 99% of the arranging; whoever does the arranging does the video. Mermaid was Layne's. Layne and Geoff were founding members of VoicePlay, so no tryouts... and YES, Layne has a wonderful voice. You can hear more of it on True Colors. You nailed it: they record separately. The arranger also edits. They bring in a lot of featured performers - always have - and they always sound like they've been singing together forever. Magic. Elizabeth on Charismatic Voice interviewed both Layne and Geoff and they go into the details - esp. the interview w/ Layne. Have fun- I'm looking forward to more reactions!

Oogie Boogie and Moana. You'll love them. Friends On the Other Side is their best Disney so far. Also, Geoff's solo of Take Me Home Country Roads or VP's Daddy Sang Bass will show you just how smooth he is. For the full 5 octave range listen to his solo of Blackbird. Yeah, I'm a Geoff fan. LOL As for Rachel, listen to their Phantom of the Opera.

Love the reaction. Definitely keep going down the rabbit hole. It's hard to go wrong with them, but my 3 personal favorites are Hoist the Colours, Halo and Warriors. They are all unbelievable. Brief introduction, The Tenor who started the video as the soloist is Eli, pronounced elly. The baritone is J None. He recently left the group, and they have a new baritone now named Cesar who is also amazing. The beatboxer is Layne. Layne, Geoff and Eli have been friends since high school. Some of their relatively recent videos also has a bigger guy who sings ludicrously high named Earl who unfortunately left the group last year. He had been with these guys since high school. BTW, Layne didn't start out as the beatboxer. That was Scott Porter who you can see in Halo who is now a pretty famous actor. He learned to beatbox after Scott left.

Layne the beat boxer used to be their baritone when they started back in ‘97. He didn’t become their beat boxer until their original, Scott Porter left to persue an acting career. When you react to Halo Theme or Just Sing (which I would put off for awhile) you will see him and maybe recognize him.

Caught by that D5 to D2 run with a D1 subharmonic! LOL Rachel Potter is a mezzo and played in various parts at Disneyland in CA where she lives. She's been asked to be a permanent member but declined as VP is based near Oralndo and she didn't want to move. Layne switched to beatboxer when their initial beatboxer (Scott Porter) left the group to become an actor. He's gotten better over the last 2 years. Eli (pronounced EL-EE) has an amazing range and the ability to switch styles. He's a smooth baritone in one song and a gritty, loud tenor with a 'metal scream' texture. He's often underestimated. Listen to Hoist the Colours and you'll see the other side of Eli.
@CynicalTesuji

Geoff and Layne are founding members of the group (going back to 1997, actually), but Layne was actually not the original beatboxer. I believe (could be mistaken) that Scott Porter- who recently featured on their cover of the Halo video game theme- was the original beatboxer. I've also seen somewhere that Geoff taught Layne the basics of vocal percussion (yes, Geoff can beatbox too; check out Death of a Bachelor in VoicePlay's Partwork series to see him doing it), but I'm not 100% sure of that. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken. Regardless, he has taken the role and run wild with it, as you've noticed! Eli (pronounced 'Ellie'), the tenor with the glasses, is indeed a vocal chameleon. All the guys do good character voices, but he's off the charts. He can also wail like a true rockstar (Carry On Wayward Son displays this well), with some real grit in his voice. But if you want to see the guys doing some amazing character work, their covers of This Is Halloween, Oogie Boogie's Song, and Kidnap the Sandy Claws (all from The Nightmare Before Christmas) are where to go. In that first one especially, Eli displays an astounding range of voices. J. None (Sebastian) is the smooth-as-butter baritone, although he sadly left the group earlier this year to join the Navy (although he's been back while on leave for a few feature performances). That man has runs for days (*so* much control on his voice!), and actually is another fellow with a surprising range to him. I definitely hope you'll continue checking this group out; they are all phenomenal talents, yet are often overlooking in favor of groups like Home Free and Pentatonix (the latter of which- while fully recognizing their extraordinary talents- I personally find to be overrated). But there is something special about VoicePlay, and the joy they bring to their arrangements and performances which I believe it down to the fact that these guys truly love what they are doing, and are having so much fun creating this music. And that really translates into their sound. Oh, and if you want more Disney? These guys are *all about* the Disney music. They've covered lots, and much of it with Rachel Potter (who herself is a Disney princess, I swear)- including a Moana medley you really shouldn't miss!
@janetdw
@janetdw 2 жыл бұрын
Rachel worked for Disney world as Ariel for over five years so she’s got that princess voice down pat. But she can also do a lot of different things. She toured with national touring company and she played Elphaba in Wicked. They just released a seven minute medley from Wicked, the musical and it is not to be missed. If you thought those harmonies were some thing wait until you see six of them because they have Rachel and Emoni Wilkins being featured as guests and they nailed it!

And nightmare before Christmas cover songs (oogie boogie song, whats this, kidnap mister sandy claws and this is Halloween) And so many other amazing songs! Hoist the colors, from pirates of the Caribbean and halo theme songs are one some of their absolute best songs they've made! Your mind is gonna blow with those! 🤯

Voiceplay was on The Sing Off the same season as Home Free, but they had a female singer (not Rachel) that isn't normally part of their group. Layne is the beatboxer here and J. None was the baritone - he's joined a US Navy performing group but has come back to "guest" on a few things like "Friends on the Other Side". If you're a Moana fan, their medley will knock your socks off. Just start at one end of their video playlist and dive down the rabbit hole. You'll LOVE it!

You mentioned a talent show. Both Home Free and VoicePlay were on the same season (4) of The Sing-Off with Home Free winning that year. Pentatonix was on and won season 3. There were some great groups on season 4 and VP are still friends with a lot of them and have some of the individuals featured on some videos. The world of accapella is close knit.

Layne, Geoff, Earl Elkins and Scott Porter (no longer in the group) started the group together after having been friends as far back as middle school and high school. [Scott joins them in the "Halo Theme" video] and Scott was originally the beatboxer (now he's a TV actor) and Layne took over beatboxing when Scott left the group.

Voiceplay, Pentatonix, and Home Free all competed on "Sing Off, Season 4. Home Free won, but, as you may have seen, by now, all three groups are EXTREMELY talented. I wrote the above, before Geoff hit you with his high note. I knew it would blow you away but I didn't realize it would literally blow you off the screen. I highly recommend "Oogie Boogie's Song", "Friends From the Other Side", "My Mother Told Me", "Queen in 5 Minutes", and "We Don't Talk About Bruno", among others.

The Moana Medley is a good next listen. Look at Rachel Potter's X-Factor audition. For Pentatonix, I'd recommend Mary Did You Know. As far as singing competitions... all 3 were on a show called The Sing Off. Pentatonix was the winner of season 3. Home Free was the winner of Season 4, with Voiceplay leaving about halfway through, if memory serves.

Pentatonix won The Sing Off, in 2011. Home Free won the following year. Voiceplay were on the same season but got knocked out earlier than Home Free. So yes, they were on talent shows. Geoff and Laine and another member who left, Earl, were singing together in school so I guess vocal percussion developed. Laine and Geoff are both very musical and play other instruments too. See Geoff doing the Beatles' Blackbird with a keyboard. Rachel here, is replacing Earl who was a high tenor. (See him on the Moana Medley) She was on America's got talent.

Would love to know you are still doing VoicePlay. Eli does do some character voicing. His school was near Geoff's and Layne's and he competed against them. He graduated and became a part of a rock band or 2. In 2010, he joined VoicePlay and after VP's Earl Elkins left the group for personal reasons after 23 yrs, and Eli is now the Tenor 1 and is sometimes called Rock God. J None, the crustacean here was recruited by the US Navy Chorus. He said he be back after 5 yrs but he's been coming back regularly to help with videos. Since then, he's been in Friends on the Other Side, Nothing Else Matters (Metallica), Valhalla Calling (Miracle of Sound), In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins), Hellfire (Hunchback of Notre Dame). VoicePlay is unusual in that all the members have worked in the Orlando theme parks and understand how important the theatricality is. They have no contracts with anyone, do all the work from arranging, costuming, staging, camera work, pre-mix audio, video. Eli, guy in the yellow shirt handles all the lighting, green screens, computer generated backgrounds. Layne and Geoff have been alternating the video project. It is that person's project. Eli did Eleanor Rigby a few years back and recently he did the project for Creep (RadioHead). Eli is joining into the rotation for project management starting very shortly. Layne was the baritone in the beginning and when Scott Porter (beatboxer) left for an acting career, Layne and Geoff discussed him becoming the beatboxer -wanted it badly. Geoff taught him what he knew and Layne ran with it. Tony Wakim was baritone for awhile but wanted to get into production and he and Layne bought a studio which became Pattycake Productions. Many of VoicePlay's and Geoff's solos are done in Pattycake Productions.

As far as Pentatonix goes, I'd suggest you start with their newest video from their current holiday album - "The Prayer". It is amazing! After that, it depends on what you're interested in. Christmas? They are the masters of Christmas songs! Electro-rock? Country? Instrumental? They won Grammy Awards with those 3 genres. Hip Hop? Classical? Rock? Queen? Michael Jackson? And, of course, their many originals! The choice is yours! 💖

Others who have been part of voice play over the years include Earl (awesome tenor), Cesare, Scott Porter, Jose, Tony, Monica etc *if you check two other songs before you hit the other Disney stuff, Halo theme and Just Sing with the captions turned on will give you tons of info. **Eli, Layne and Geoff have been performing together since high school. ***Penatonix won a Grammy for their Daft Punk Mix.

You know they have a Moana Medley right? Other good ones, My Mother Told Me, Hoist the Colours, Halo Theme (you might walk away on that one, hahaha), Carry On Wayward Son, ... I mean, Voiceplay is prob my fave out of the three but I enjoy having to learn to hit the notes that Geoff squeezes in there. Also Pentatonix has "Hallelujah" (the Cohen Version), last I saw it had over 600 million views... probably the most common starting place. Then Home Free, many start with "Man of Constant Sorrow"

If you like Disney, you were in the right place. They’ve also done a Moana medley as well as several featured songs from a lot of Disney movies. They’re also very fond of medleys. A queen in five minutes and boy bands in five minutes are great. Carry-on my way word son really shows Eli belting it out. He originally was a front man for rock bands. J Is the baritone the played Sebastian and he has enlisted in the Navy to sing for them but came back on his first leave to do I’ve got friends on the other side from the Princess frog. As well as several minis. For pure drama I strongly recommend hoist the colors from Pirates of the Caribbean three as well as HALO from the video game, Warriors from a video game and the recently released Wicked medley.

It's not a well. It's a rabbit hole and you have to explore more. VoicePlay is fantastic they do a lot of Disney songs. Lately they have been featuring guests in their songs. Geoff and Layne,the beatboxer, arrange most of the songs. If you want to hear Geoff by himself he has a channel where he does solo work. He will magically clone himself when he harmonizes with himself! His high notes are just as beautiful as his low notes. Any song you pick to listen to will be amazing.
