@@allanyan8286 Yea a single plane crash can kill hundreds, but a major plane crash like that happens maybe once a year. Cars kill thousands of people per year. So yes, the most dangerous part of flying is the car ride to the airport.
@AviatingRandom
@AviatingRandom Жыл бұрын
@@allanyan8286 it is true that plane crashes can be deadly, but statistically speaking, driving to the airport is still more dangerous than flying. According to the National Safety Council, the odds of dying in a car accident are about 1 in 103, whereas the odds of dying in a plane crash are infact 1 in 205,552. Flying is one of the safest modes of transportation available today. Furthermore, it's worth noting that the comment about the Air France Flight 4590 is a bit misleading. While that crash was certainly tragic and resulted in the loss of all onboard, it was an extremely rare occurrence. The vast majority of plane crashes are far less catastrophic and often result in only minor injuries or no injuries at all

I don't think people in fear seem to realize just how safe flying is. On top of it these planes are very, very well maintained. So just relax, enjoy the trip and you're going to be 99.99% fine.

@@portuguesepilot92 Yeah, but I drive the car, so I have some control. I don't control the plane. In a plane, you have to trust the the plane, maintained by others, and the pilot. In a car, you trust the car, maintained by you or whoever you choose, and yourself, trusting you can drive competently. Also, plane crashes have low survive-ability, cars do not unless your driving like an idiot. Which, at the same time, is usually on you, not anyone else. Granted that sometimes it can just be extreme back luck/wrong place wrong time. The moral of the story? The difference is control. You control nothing about the plane except where you sit and the company you fly with. However, you control nearly everything concerning the car. So there's a big difference. Also, the plane comment was a joke... I not sure if you picked up on that....

For those who aren’t frightened of the unknown during their first flight, I like to encourage you to focus on the edge of the runway rather than off in the distance. You’ll marvel at the speed as it goes way past the 70 most of us drive on highways. You won’t sense that speed when looking into the distance. Then, without any warning, you’ll tip back a bit and you’ll be surprised as the ground falls away from you. Jets are so fast and smooth, there just never felt like any special sensation to being airborne. Just that the ground fell away. The thump you hear is the gear as it’s stowed into the fuselage.

@@freedom_in_india__ I have had ear pain, and the best solution I could find was something called Earplanes, a special kind of ear plug designed to help equalize pressure in the ears while flying. On ascending, they always pop open, which feels good; but during the descent is when it really gets uncomfortable. The pressure doesn't equalize as easily while descending. The Earplanes helped somewhat. There may be other such items available by now. Last time I flew was in 2013.

My first flight was 14 days ago, from london to las vegas. 10 hours non stop flight. I was also scared as hell, but the hardest part was the waiting on the airport. If you made it on to the plane, you can be proud of you and relax. Flying is safe and somewhat satisfying. Keep in mind, that i am a person who suffers panic attacks and i have made it without any problem. Don´t think about what could happen, think about a plane like you think about a bus or subway. It brings you safe from one place to another. i have made it, so anyone can! I am the biggest anxious person in the world.

I have terrible anxiety as well, and the last time I boarded a plane I broke out into a total head to toe sweat (I was SOAKED!) and the flight attendant came over to me and said, “Are you ok? Are you sick?” I told her I have TERRIBLE anxiety, and she said “you need to get off the plane right now!” My bags flew to LAX and I sat in the airport shaking waiting for my ride to come back and get me. This was soon after 9/11 and nobody was fooling around on a plane - especially flight attendants. She knew something wasn’t “right” and as they were trying to get boarded and leave on time, she did the right thing asking me to leave the plane. I haven’t been on a plane since, BUT I agree with you the worst part of it for me is the WAITING in the airport and the anticipation. I was already a mess by the time I got into the plane and like I said, they weren’t about to deal with my mental issues (and I don’t blame them.)

I used to be terrified... Something that helped me was an article I read on conquering the fear. 2 things if pointed out which really stuck with me: - there are thousands of flights every day, in fact the plane you're on probably took a few trips earlier. Odds are, you'll be just another flight - flight attendants fly all the time and they're on your plane along with a pilot and crew who also take lots of flights and may have had a few earlier - the most dangerous part of your journey is your car ride to the airport

Not to mention, the last time there was a fatal crash on a passenger airliner registered in the US (the Southwest incident in 2018 was not a crash, and though the PrimeAir in 2019 had one non-revenue passenger, it was functionally a cargo plane) since 2009. I was a little behind on education at the time (now one of the youngest in my year at college), and I wasn't even in Kindergarten yet when that happened. The last time a plane crashed in the United states, and people died, was 14 years ago.

Also important to mention, especially for those struggling with giving control to others is just how mich more training pilots have to go through than if you're driving a car for example. Theory alone is (at least in EASA territory) 9 months plus full-time learning, not to mention the almost 200 hours of flying time required before you can even get your first license, which doesn't include the type rating, specific training for the aircraft you're later gonna fly with. All in all, pilots are definitely some of the most well trained folks that could be unleashed on the public xD

I remember taking one of my sons on his first flight - he was 9 years old - he was very nervous, but he loves rollercoasters. So the best way I could think of to describe it to him, was to tell him that at the beginning of the runway, you lurch a bit like a rollercoaster, then you go up, much like you do on a rollercoaster, then after a while you even out. Yes he was nervous on the way out, but coming home, he was fine.

Hate take-off's as well. the feeling of the weight of the fuselage so it seems like once you get off the ground you feel like you're falling back down but you actually aren't. got over that feeling by watching out the window to see what was going on. eventually got used to it but still a uncanny feeling ngl

One time I was one a flight from Phoenix to Minneapolis and there was some turbulence. The whole plane was shaking and there was huge dips, people were literally screaming. Everything was fine, and you just have to remember that planes are required to be able to withstand even the hardest turbulence possible.

Fun facts: takeoff is typically around 170 mph give or take a few, cruise speed is usually in the 500 to 550 mph range at 36,000 feet, and landing is 140 to 160 mph depending on weight and elevation of the airport. Having a speedometer app can be fun. Also, on Southwest you can log on to the wi-fi and see that info on the flight's stats/progress.

The first time I ever flew I was 14, flying from BDL to DEN with a stop in Chicago. I was all by myself, sitting by the window and as we're landing I see the flaps go up on the wing; I thought the plane was FALLING APART!!! Took off from there on what was supposed to be a two hour flight, we wound up circling Kansas for two hours. My Aunt was at the gate waiting for me, she got me to her house and I was told to call my Mother IMMEDIATELY!!! She was at home in Mass. going nuts; she thought my flight had been hijacked! I just kept saying 'but we could see Kansas!!!'

I have been flying on places since I was two years old. I'm still terrified during takeoff and during strong turbulence but I just close my eyes and pretend to sleep. It helps to distract yourself with music or watching something. Reading on planes makes me nauseous so I don't do that anymore, lol.

i dont remember the first time i flew, but i remember some of them after that (i was pretty young). i do remember being horrified for awhile, but here i am now on my way to be a pilot💀 also, you really have nothing to worry about when flying. aircrafts are actually far safer than cars. one having to do with pilots have literally MINIMUM 1,500 hours, whereas new drivers might have like 50 minimum, depending on state (they still be shit asf tho), and the fact that planes are CONSTANTLY maintained. pilots do pre-flight walkaround, where they check the aircraft before flight to make sure nothings wrong. also last thing, turbulence being another thing people tend to get anxious over, it's just a difference in wind speed above and below the aircraft. a pretty solid example of it that ive heard is that you're in jello, theres no way you can just fall out of the sky. the only real danger is falling onboard because you didn't listen to the pilot and you're not seated lol. idk if any of that made sense, but i hope it helped anyone whos a bit nervous on flights

The very shape of the plane is what keeps it in the air. It’s a powered glider. Every system has multiple backups. Even if you lost both engines you could make it to an alternate airport. The last fatal airline crash in the US was in 2009. It’s safer than walking down the street. Safer than driving. Safer than most things you do every day.

I was 22 when I flew for the first time on my own, as a kid I was used to travel with my grandparents, and because my parents watched documentary series Mayday air disasters I was very scared of flying because I saw many episodes how the plane crashed and people died, but few years later I was accepted into few volunteering projects in Malta and Turkey and I had to fly on my own without support and help, I remember my first flight to Malta and to Istanbul how much I was scared I was freaking out, but later I noticed that there's nothing to be scared of and I started enjoying flying now I totally love it, okay sometimes I still feel a bit anxious while take off but mostly it's because I am kinda scared of heights but with each flight I am overcoming this my anxiety and it's better and better and now I enjoy my travels so don't worry 😁

I used to hate the ear popping when I was a kid. Years later, and I barely notice it. Of course, nowadays the cabin pressure changes are computer controlled, whereas in the 1970s when I started to fly with my parents they were manual, and flight crews often weren't very gentle with them (as if they didn't have more important things to do). As a result, one's ears often used to pop quite violently.

My first flight on a passenger jet was over 40 years ago and I was seated in the very last row. I was shocked at how fast it gets going and then it felt like a large bus speeding down the road. The front lifted off the ground for a few second and when the entire plane got airborne it felt like the back of the plane was dropping to the ground so that was a little scary for a second. Then after that all was fine.
