@@sixslinger9951 Yes and if they can pull off a live version that's comprable or seemingly identical to the studio version it's extremely impressive. However that is not the case on this particular song. F.Y.I. Auto Tunes and most of tricks you're referring to we're not around over four decades ago and 1982. And the fact that they are notably one of the greatest vocalist groups to ever harmonize USING JUST THEIR OWN VOICES has absolutely nothing to do with "studio tricks" other than probably choosing to use the 17th take instead of the only first one.

Love the sound of CS&N. They were one of the folk rock supergroups of the 60's-70's. They all came from previous groups & were known for their great harmonies. They have a huge catalogue of songs such as "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", "Marrakesh Express", "Wooden Ships", "Helplessly Hoping" etc. Another great album is "Deja Vu" where Neil Young joined them "Teach Your Children", "Woodstock", "Carry On", "Our House" etc. Sadly David Crosby passed away recently.

Crosby, Stills, & Nash were a "supergroup" in that each of the members had been in successful bands previously. David Crosby with The Byrds, Stephen Stills with Buffalo Springfield, and Graham Nash with the British band, The Hollies. All of those bands are worth checking out.

They formed CSN because of the three part harmony sound they created the first time they ever sang together. They met at a Party at Mama Cass' house in LA (She was in The Mamas and The Papas) and sang together. The way their voices blended caused Crosby to quit the Byrds, Stills to quit the Hollies, and Nash soon quit The Buffalo Springfield, to form "Croby Stills and Nash".

Stephen Stills (lead singer of this song), has had a passion for sailing throughout his life. While he is most recognized as a founding member of the legendary rock bands Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY), his love for sailing has been a significant part of his personal life. Stills has been an avid sailor for several decades and has owned multiple sailboats. One of his notable vessels was a 62-foot steel ketch named "Mayan," which he acquired in the late 1970s. He has been known to spend considerable time sailing and living aboard his boats, seeking solace and inspiration on the open water. Sailing serves as an outlet for Stills to relax, unwind, and find creative inspiration away from the demands of the music industry. The sense of freedom, adventure, and connection with nature that sailing provides aligns with his artistic spirit. Stills has often emphasized the joy and sense of peace he finds while sailing, and it has become an integral part of his life outside of music. While Stills' musical career has been his primary focus, his passion for sailing has remained constant. It is one of the ways he balances his life and nurtures his spirit beyond the stage and recording studio. Sailing allows him to connect with the elements, explore new horizons, and enjoy the serenity of being on the water. Stephen Stills' affinity for sailing highlights the multifaceted nature of his interests and pursuits, as he continues to leave a lasting impact both as a musician and as someone who embraces the freedom and adventure of life on the open sea.

Neil Young took them to a different level but yeah CSN had a perfect trio thing going that has been nearly impossible to reproduce. They all do variations on the same thing and have incredible support ability for the other two when it’s their turn to showcase. And of course when they act in unison it’s like one person. Even they talk about being shocked, like holy shit we’ve all been in harmony bands but it’s NEVER been like this.

This is after Mr Stills had a stroke. His voice hasnt been the same since. He has one of the best voices in rock, also one of the great guitarists.

I love the music as well but i love lyrics of a song if i can understand it, because sometimes the lyrics are so much toward poetry that its difficult for me to understand; but this song sounded like the story teller was saying that they decided to sail away from a relationship going nowhere in a ship called music and go find a love that endures and he found it in the southern cross or he sailed away and saw the southern cross; and this was a love that the heaven brought together and would endure; it was him and the ship called music and music is love and together; they would sail on to the southern cross and a better life that is blessed and filled with abundance; both spiritual and material 💎💎

To me, the lyrics speak of a man getting on his sail boat, headed in the southern hemisphere, to get away for peace and refection on a relationship that also went south. He realizes that it could be mainly his fault: "In a nosy bar in Avalon, I tried to call you. But on the midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away." Then it turns metaphysical with him understanding that higher powers have been watching over him in his life, and had brought them both together regardless of a relationship on the rocks : "Think about how many times I have fallen. Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'. What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten." He seems to be frustrated with relationships with women, as he's been wanting one that can last: "I have been around the world. Lookin' for that woman, girl. Who knows love can endure. And you know it will." And, at the end, he seems to come to the sad conclusion that though their love is strong, it's probably not permanent, as most likely with future relationships too: "And my love is an anchor tied to you. Tied with a silver chain. I have my ship ... she is all that I have left, and 'Music' is her name ... and the Southern Cross" So he will keep being guided by the Southern Cross (a constellation sailors used to navigate in the southern hemisphere), or the "higher power," and will still have his God-given talent to pursue--his music. My interpretation anyway!

It was rock music. Back when it was Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young there were four of them in harmony. They sounded much better when they were younger, don't we all. The Southern Cross is a constellation of stars visable in the souther hemisphere, but not in the north that is the southern equilivant of Ursa Major, in that Ursa Major has the star Polaris (the north star) that sailors use to navigate by. The Southern Cross serves the same function in the southern hemisphere. Maybe in the song it means you know you have left the northern world behind. Avalon is the harbor town of Catalina Island off California, where the ship is leaving from. Papeete is the main destination port in Tahiti, French Polynesia. (arguably one of the most beautiful places on earth) The Marquesa's are island on the way. Off the wind means down wind, or not into the wind. On the outside means they were doing a great circle route around them. The down hill run means they were going with the trade winds and currents going in their direction helping them along. (trade winds are circular bands of winds that flow around the oceans that are named that because those winds were used by the trading ships in the days of sail) Eighty feet of waterline is how long the ship is where it sits in the water, which makes a difference on how fast it can go. (a displacement hull's speed is about 1.2 to 1.4 times the square root of the waterline length, (square root of 80 is 8.94 times 1.3 =11.6 which means with good wind the ship will move at about 11.6 knots, nautical mile per hour or, 279 miles in 24 hours, most smaller sailboats think 100 is not to bad) Way is ship moving through the water. Whoever wrote the song was a sailor.

CSN and then CSN&Y is folk. Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Teach your Children are a couple of my absolute favorites. Joni Mitchell was friends with and dated two of the members and she wrote one of their hits, Woodstock. Great group

As one of the previous commenters said, they were one of the first super groups to come out. The lead singer, Stephen Stills, came from the Buffalo Springfield, the guy in the middle, Graham Nash, came from the Hollies and the guy on the end with the big mustache, David Crosby, came from the Byrds.

A great song by a great group! Not only for the music (yes, I'd say folk rock) and harmonies, but also for the "bars" as I think you call them Britt 🤔😄! Thanks for playing and reacting to a classic!

Breaking down the music of my generation by genres can be difficult. Early on purists were slicing and dicing the music by style and category. There was rock-n-roll, folk, pop, country, folk-rock, pop-rock, country-rock, acid-rock, and on and on and on. In reality the music of our generation was a pot of musical stew comprised of a wide variety of elements and flavors. We all our favorite flavors, of course, but in general we loved it all and lumped it together as Rock Music. There were, and are, those who quibble about the details. But that's my take on it! Love your reactions Britt -Thank You!!

His sailboat had the name "Music". Yes, that was her name, as he stated. After the breakup, he still had her at least where he could get away and reflect on his life.. He had a ship and all her flags were a flyin' and 80' of the waterline, nicely making way.
