My understanding of this song is that it tells the story of a relationship with a woman who struggles with drug and alcohol abuse. It finds meaning in trying to be patient, to remember the love that the two first shared, and stay by her side through these hard times. Rucker said that he wrote the song about his own past behavior in relationships, drinking and partying too much like the woman depicted in the song.

This song comes from their debut album "Cracked Rear View" which, to date, has sold more than 18 million copies worldwide making it one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Darius Rucker (nobody is actually named Hootie) is the lead singer of this band. They are not broken up, but they do take extensive breaks at times. Darius started doing country music during one of these breaks and has become a very successful country music star. He is also a member of The Grand Ole Opry, which is a big deal in country music. His biggest country hit is a song called "Wagon Wheel." The biggest hit for Hootie and the Blowfish is "Hold My Hand." but another great song from them is "Hannah Jane."

hey Brit, I just want to say thanks, the last year has been bad, i was diagnosed with 4 types of cancer on the same day, since then i have lost a kidney, my entire colon, and now in two months they are taking half my stomach. Probably too much info. but i wanted you to understand where i am coming from. Since i don't move around much any longer, I have become a reaction video fanatic. Your song choices are great, your insight and comments are amazing and relevant, but most of all it is your gentle personality that comes thru the most. Your soothing voice is some of the best medicine around. So again thank you sooo much for easing this fella's pain, please keep up the good work and I wish you and your husband all the best.

The lyrics tell the story of a patient man in love with a woman who is an irresponsible alcoholic. He keeps trying to save her and salvage the relationship, even as he sees the toll it is taking on him and the probable futility of his attempts to keep it together. Darius Rucker said he wrote the song about one of his own past relationships, but swapped the gender roles - that in real life, he was the irresponsible one and his girlfriend was the long-suffering partner who tried to keep things together. Darius Rucker acknowledged that he originally wrote the song as a country song.

A friend I grew up with moved to North Carolina. Years later he's back in town and we're hanging out at a bar. He tells me "you need to hear this band. Hootie and the Blowfish. They're going to be huge and you'd love them!" That was a couple of years before "Hold My Hand" hit it big and when it did all I could think was "damn... dude was so right!"

Great group of guys here. Back in the mid-90's I got to see them in a 600 seat venue from the 2nd row.....just as they started to hit it big. Before the concert they stopped into the restuarant next door, owned by a high school classmate of mine, and just sat around and talked to everybody just like they were one of us. After the show we had invited them to come down to a little bar, owned by a good friend, but never really thought they would. Sure enough I think it was 3 of the 4 of them came down, had a few drinks with everybody, sat around and talked, got up and did a couple of songs, and signed the "wall" inside where anyone of any substance signed after an appearance. That wall is still there over 25 yrs later. Just regular guys who were talented and personable.

So Darius Rucker was part of Hootie and the Blowfish not only because of his love of rock. But also because he didn't think that he could be a successful country artist due to his race. He always wanted to be one. Eventually, he did start making country music. And his first album "Live and Learn" had multiple songs get in the top 10 and at least one hit #1

Love your analysis style. You're very much someone who needs (yes, NEEDS) to make sense of a situation in all its constituent parts. So musically, lyrically and even fashionably, you often try to put together a synthesis of what's happening in the video early on. Usually this serves you well, but occasionally you "get out over your skis" and then have an epiphany moment later on which is absolutely delightful when we actually see the lightbulb turn on over your head! LOL Keep 'em coming!

This song always hits me in the gut. I lost my big sister to addiction. Every day was stressful because I never knew what she would be like. I would pray for her to have a good day, but when she wasn't high, she was a hysterical mess. She died alone. A fentanyl overdose.

Sorry to hear of your painful loss David. Wouldn't it be great if we as a society stopped treating addiction as a moral failing and criminal offence and instead treated it as the serious medical issue it is so that people can actually get the help they need to recover from it?..... Hard as it may be, I hope you're finding some peace with your loss. Remember the good times with your sister, I'm sure there were many.

I don’t think he’s saying he’ll be there for her at all. I think he’s coming to grips with the fact that he’s tried and done all he can do - but she needs to hit rock-bottom before she realizes she needs help. He needs to not be her perpetual crutch, and needs to let her figure things out, even if it means letting her cry.

Not sure why everyone is mistakenly claiming he is lovingly/patiently "waiting" for the woman. he's not. He's washed his hands of her. That's why he's saying it doesn't matter what she does, live, die, leave, stay - let her cry alone, don't support or comfort her, and just let it happen. He's talking about the hard part of dealing with addiction when you need to wash your hands of them and let them suffer/hit rock bottom on their own. Even still, he can't leave because of his love to this toxic unhealthy creature, so he feels trapped with this addicted woman. So each day he just watches and suffers but does/says nothing, waiting, waiting for however it'll turn out in the end and for the merciful finale to finally come. I heard two claims about the origins of this song. One, it was autobiographical discussing when he was an addict and his mate was dealing with him. I've also heard several older sources from back when it was released saying he was actually talking about his own mother and what it was like dealing with an addict mother. Either way, the origin is irrelevant to the message of the song. The misery and desperation of having to detach yourself and wash your hands of a loved one, but also remaining trapped with them, watching helplessly as they wither.

They started off with that as kind of mid-America soft-rock-country and album by album slid more into country…ish 😄 Saw them at Manchester Apollo (UK) in the late nineties and was a fantastic gig 🙂 And…there is no Hootie, or Blowfish…at least not in the band 😀 They said that they’re descriptions of two guys they vaguely used to know. One had big googly eyes like an owl, and the other looked…well…like a blowfish 😄

There are three lines in this song that are repeated, "Let her be", "Let her cry", and "Let her go". In the beginning of the song, it makes the listener think the singer is just a person madly in love with a woman, and they don't care what they do. In the middle of the song, the same lyrics are repeated, but we learn the woman is actually an addict. Hence, he is unknowingly acting as an enabler. Towards the end of the song, he asks his mother for advice, and the lyrics are repeated again. This time they mean something totally different. Mom is basically telling him to let that hooker bounce, he deserves better. Just my opinion.

Contrary to popular myth, nobody in the band is Hootie or Blowfish. Hootie & Blowfish are nicknames of college friends not in the band. Also the sound of Hootie & the Blowfish is best summarized as College Rock. Many colleges & universities operate(d) a low wattage radio station especially thoughs offering communications degrees. I grewup just a few miles from a state college, the overwhelming majority of the music they played were from current students, local bands & singers, as well as other independent artists.
