Believe it or not she first recorded it at 11 (Independent Album). She re-recorded it at 13 for her debut label album. The official video was done when she was 14. Here I believe she was indeed 14.

Leanne Rimes' debut with "Blue" instantly shot her onto the upper level with the likes of Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton! And like Tanya Tucker, she was only a 14 year old little girl at the time!!!!!! So glad you can appreciate such talent!!

Many sources claim Bill Mack wrote the ballad for Patsy Cline, but he merely pitched it to the country singer, who died in a plane crash in 1963 before she could record it. The myth gained steam when Rimes was hailed as the second coming of Patsy Cline after she released it. Although it was claimed that Bill Mack had been waiting to find the right vocalist to record "Blue" for all that time, the song was recorded by at least five artists (Mack himself in 1958, Kenny Roberts in 1966, Roy Drusky circa 1960-70s, Polly Stephens Exley in the late 1980s, and Kathryn Pitt in 1993) prior to LeAnn Rimes

Leann Rimes was only 10 years old when she sang "The Star Spangeld Banner" that he heard , and he sent her his song " BLUE" for her to consider recording . So she agreed and that was how she agreed to record her song "BLUE"!!!!!!

LeAnn Rimes, (born August 28, 1982, Jackson, Mississippi, U.S.), American country music singer who topped the charts at age 13 with her rendition of “Blue.” She drew attention and admiration for her vocal similarity to country legend Patsy Cline. She was ONLY 13 when she recorded this song!

Rimes was "discovered" by late night radio talker Bill Mack who did a daily midnight to 6 am radio show. Mack was known as the Trucker Cowboy and had a national audience with the cross country trucker community. According to the NY Times, Mack wrote "Blue" for Patsy Cline in 1963 but she never recorded it. He offered "Blue" to Ms. Lee Ann, which won her a Grammy. She first sang the song when she was 11 years old !!! With a national audience, Mack propelled LAR into stardom overnight. Truckers could drive cross country for six hours from state to state and never have to change radio stations. Bill Mack was friends with Elvis, Waylon and Willie. He died of COVID in 2020. Listening to him on the late night radio was a treat. Broadcasting out of Fort Worth, Texas, his radio signal stretched from coast to coast and from Mexico to Canada.

I went and saw her back in 2010 and when she did Blue for her encore it sent shivers down my spine. Her voice is still as majestic as it was when she originally recorded it.

LeAnn was only 13 years old when she originally recorded it. I was living in Seattle & this was my 1990s "Country" phase, when myself and a small group of friends went to the local country bar to two-step and line dance. When we heard this for the first time, we all thought a DJ somewhere found an old Patsy Cline song and re-released it. Yes, she had the pipes. She did covers of both "I Will Always Love You" & "Unchained Melody" that she recorded between the ages of 10-11. Britt you NEED to hear those to hear the vocal control LeAnn had at that young age. She went on to win the Grammy for Best New Artist and is the youngest singer to achieve that award!

LeAnn definitely nailed this music to perfection. The breaks in her voice are quite deliberate. Every word, every note, every vocal technique used is deliberately and to perfection. Out of this world. To answer your question, how she does it is easy to explain. She jumps one octave and goes from full voice to falsetto both at the same instant. Plus, she jumps to the high note spot on in tune with the chord. Same in the opposite direction when she comes back down. Falsetto to full voice at the same instant she drops down an octave and bang on the money to keep the chord in tune. It is a rare and special gift given to a very few musicians.

I've been playing in bands since the 1960's. My brother can yodel, my late mother could yodel but I never could... until last year. I was driving home having heard Lovesick Blues by Hank WIlliams earlier, and I was doing the yodelling bits quite easily. I almost crashed the car. Maybe it's different for everybody, but I was always trying to yodel from low to high, and I discovered that I could do it if I went high and yodeled on the way down. I'm still too scared to do it at a gig though. hahaha

I saw LeAnn Rimes in concert, front row and center in Cali at an outdoor amphitheatre. She was the opening act for Dwight Yoakam. She was on tour promoting her debut album. She already was as popular as Mr. Yoakam, even though she was so new to the scene. She sounded amazing, and was probably around 14 or so at the time. She's incredible.

When Leanne Rimes released this song in the 1990s whenI first heard "Blue" it hit me like a bolt of lightening. It hit country music fans of that time justthe same. It was an instant sensation. We almost thought Patsy Cline had been reincarnated !!!

I will never forget the first time I heard this song. I was already a HUGE Patsy Cline fan and very familiar with her work. I was positive that this was an old Patsy tune that someone had just recently found and released. I was stunned and became an immediate fan when I learned the truth!

I remember the first time I heard Leann sing this song via television, like this. I was in my early teens and had just an embryonic knowledge of country music but when I heard that voice emanating from the television, being projected by this little girl no less, I thought "surely there are angels living among us, camouflaged as human beings because this voice is just other-worldly. Granted, I had a very limited exposure to country music at the time but I struggled to reconcile what I was hearing with my reality, and the only conclusion I was able to reach was that "THIS EXTRAORDINARILY ANGELLIC VOICE IS SIMPLY UNPARALLELED AND HER TALENT IS STAGGERING - SHE'S NOT HUMAN"
