None of the things you mentioned are unaccomplishable today, the music industry need to start rewarding artists who perform like this instead of hyping what you mentioned, but authenticity is too expensive for labels these days in their opinion...

Excellent way to describe this great song, and as much as I'm burnt out on hearing it, it still touches my ears with the upmost reverberating musicality of the greatest rock band ever, the artistry continuously amazes, no matter how many thousands of times I've heard this, along with the rest of their catalog. Good reaction btw, don't stop with this song, there's so much more :)

@@ORagnar Lol, I know what you mean. My favourite piece of music will very likely always be The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor (Moonlight) by Beethoven. But Pink Floyd are my favourite band, closely followed by Radiohead. It's difficult to list favourites though!

Robert Plant spent much of the '70s answering questions about the lyrics he wrote for "Stairway." When asked why the song was so popular, he said it could be its "abstraction," adding, "Depending on what day it is, I still interpret the song a different way - and I wrote the lyrics." The lyrics take some pretty wild turns, but the beginning of the song is about a woman who accumulates money, only to find out the hard way her life had no meaning and will not get her into heaven. This is the only part Plant would really explain, as he said it was "a woman getting everything she wanted without giving anything back." Robert Plant is a great admirer of all things mystic, the old English legends and lore and the writings of the Celts. He was immersed in the books Magic Arts in Celtic Britain by Lewis Spence and The Lord Of The Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Tolkien inspiration can be heard in the phrase, "In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees," which could be a reference to the smoke rings blown by the wizard Gandalf. There is also a correlation between the lady in the song and the character from the book, Lady Galadriel, the Queen of Elves who lives in the golden forest of Lothlorien. In the book, all that glittered around her was in fact gold, as the leaves of the trees in the forest of Lothlorien were golden. (Songfacts.com)

Great explanation. I've always interpreted it as being about a life of unthinking shallow materialism and greed which can take people over vs something deeper, more thoughtful, true to self, and principled.

“Stairway to Heaven” brings to our attention the hard truth that true happiness in life derives not from accumulating material possessions. The song tells a story of a woman who made so much money only to realize, in the end, that her life was meaningless even with all her wealth, and she won’t make it to heaven.

Please listen to the official recording. This live version is missing some of the lush background instrumentation, and the words are completely understandable. It's an incredible song and in most lists it's the greatest rock song ever made. BTW - Totally enjoy your reactions.

This concert took place in the summer of 1973 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. I was there (I was only 17 at the time. I'm 66 now). I remember it as if it were yesterday! Me and 3 of my friends drove over from New Jersey and we were stoned most of the concert! LOL! The song compares the illusion of worldly entitlement to the reality of spiritual awakening. ✌✌

My first concert was Led Zeppelin, 1969. Stairway to Heaven is a rock anthem in my books. So many great songs. Check out the Heart cover at the Kennedy Center Honers, the all time best cover of a great song.

When zep was formed in the late 60s they was considered the worlds first hardrock super group. The guitar player was in the biggest band at the time called the yardbirds . And zepplen was using the name the new yard birds. But they needed a new name They going to leaning towards the name supergroup they was at a party and they was telling everyone there new name and a drunk the drummer Keith moon from the band the who said that's going go over like a f🤣uking Led Zeppelin. Like the famous zeppelin crash. This is this the most requested song on the radio in history. The vest that the singer is wearing is from a groupie from the night before.. Led zeppelin invented the badboy genre of hardrock. To date they sold over 400 million albums. Zeppelin changed how artists was treated before zeppelin artists only got a small percentage of the money from concert but there very large and scary manger peter grant told the promoters if you want zeppelin you get a small percentage of the concerts and tee shits sales. Zeppelins crowds was so big that the promoters thought a small percentage of zeppelin is still better that nothing.

No. Cream was considered the first rock supergroup. They had enormous influence on musicians of that era. Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne has said in interviews that they wanted to ba a heavier version of Cream.

This concert at MSG is also a movie called, The Song Remains The Same. If you liked this even a little bit you will be blown away by the whole show which can very much be a spiritual journey in of itself, plus you have some of the best music and performances by some of the best artists of all time. Turn the lights off, turn it up as loud as possible, and enjoy.

I thoroughly enjoy your channel…and the funny, honest, and genuine nature of reacting! Your Led Zeppelin life isn’t complete until you have checked out “Kashmir”, live from the Celebration Day concert at the O2 in 2007. Those guys were all in their late 50’s / early 60’s then, and it was a rare band appearance since they called it quits around 1980. With the son (Jason) of their late (legendary) drummer, John Bonham on the drums, those guys showed us why they will forever be one of the greatest rock bands of all time. It is soooooo worth your time! Thanks again for what you’re doing…it is truly enjoyable to watch you explore so many new styles of music.

robert plant is one of the top singers from england he is i think about 73 now and still sings actually he lives about 3 miles from were i live in worcestershire england and can often be seen just walkin around the local town and allways very polite and says hello he does alot of charitable things locally and yes he still has his famous long locks ive spoke to him many times as im in my late 60s you should check out if i were a carpenter and hangman by him great songs

Britt, great reaction by someone new to Led Zeppelin and this song. According to interviews with Jimmy Page (guitar), this song was written by him and Robert Plant (singer) at a cottage in Wales, and it came from a tune that Page was noodling with on the guitar and some influences of mythology and folklore that Plant was reading at the time. Page had in mind a song that has different movements like a classical symphony, and a song that builds in both tempo and volume to a crescendo at the end. The lyrics are mystic and spiritual and a bit vague on purpose. It's more like Plant is trying to convey a series of images than trying to tell a specific story of a specific person. Critics have explained the journey of the song in terms ranging from a psychedelic drug trip, a journey of spiritual awakening, a meditation on death and dying, and many other metaphors. Like poetry, I think that it's fine for the lyrics to mean something to one person, something different to another, and still something different to the author, even if they never come out and explain it. I don't remember ever seeing a quote from Robert Plant directly saying, "OK, this is what Stairway to Heaven means to me, or what I meant when I wrote it..." and I think he has resisted that so that each listener gets to decide that whatever the song says to them is the right meaning for that person. I love your style. Keep it up!

That's the beauty of Zeppelin. The art, the music, the mysticism, the mystery is what gives us the audience a magical ride of our lives. Four pillars, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham, John Paul Jones are masters of their craft. This concert took place at MSG in the 70s rocked the audience real hard. I watched this back on VH1 Classic and I spent 3 hours or so without ever changing the channel. Stairway to Heaven is such a timeless legendary masterpiece and eons from now people will have to listen to this story a tale that has become iconic of all time.

The guitar is called double neck. This was voted by rolling stone magazine and guitar magazine as the number one song of all time. You really should check out ," Since I Been Loving You" live in Madison square garden 1973.. probably the best best live performance ever caught on tape.younger people don't understand in 1973 there was no auto tune or anything like that live maybe echo or layering in the studio but not live it's just the microphone guitar bass and drums..and tremendous talent

My favorite band ever...LZ. Bought my first LZ album in 1973 at 13 yo followed by quadriphonic 8 track tape for my quad stereo system. First saw them perform in concert in 1976 a couple weeks b4 my 17th birthday. They were THE hard rock band at the time and still considered one of the greatest ever. They discontinued being a band much too soon in the early 80s with the death of their beast of a drummer, John Bonham, still considered one of the greatest rock drummers ever. Each of their 4 members considered one of the greatest ever in their respective roles. They changed the nature of how rock music was produced and recorded to sell albums and concerts versus hit singles for the charts. FM radio took over from AM to allow for late night playing of albums and longer songs considered much too long for daytime playing and ad space. Enjoy seeing younger generations discovering their innovative and iconic music. Mark

Listening to music is so individual the story is never set in stone, my experience of Led Zeppelin IV was from a very young age of 13, I was walking home and saw a very beat up old cassette tape on the sidewalk with no labels on it, so I took it home and played it on my dads stereo system which was audio file state of the art at the time, it sounded AMAZING!

Completely agree, this is not their best song (imho). That accolade belongs to Kashmir, I believe. However this and Kashmir are very similar in that they are slightly surreal ramblings of vocals backed by incredible musicianship.

You got it. It's a spiritual song. You come through with true understanding as always. IMHO this song is way deeper than what most folks get, but that's prolly cuz I have had experiences that most folks haven't had, and if you haven't lived it there is no way to explain it. ALL the lyrics are rich with meaning, but to me two of the key phrases are "Cuz ya know sometimes words have two meanings," and "sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven." Cuz there is a spiritual theme to life, and everything that happens has multiple layers of meaning. To paraphrase a Zen Buddhist saying: This song is not the moon, it's just a finger pointing to the moon. If you want the moon, you need to follow the fingers until you see it for yourself. Jimmy PAGE, who was the guitarist in the yardbirds when they disbanded, Due to contractual obligations Jimmy formed the line-up here as the new yardbirds to fulfil touring commitments. After finishing their tour they were looking for a name for the group. Keith Moon, The drummer from the who said that they would go down like a Lead Zeppelin, In reference to the famous airships and the name stuck

You can also watch the band Heart doing this song at the Kennedy Center (with members of Led Zeppelin watching them in the audience--with their dead drummer's son playing with Heart). Led Zeppelin was a play on the Zeppelin that burst into flames on 6th May 1937 called the Hindenburg. Jimmy said that the band would go down like the Hindenburg never knowing that they would have the impact on music that they have had, they are still regarded as rock gods. The band 1000's of bands and artists today call their inspiration. I LOVE THEM!!

The name of the band come from when they were just starting out someone told them they would go down like a Led Zeppelin, they liked the name and used it. But now that you’ve heard that you should check out Hart version doing their tribute at the Kennedy center, it’s amazing.

In sum, I always interpreted the lyrics to mean that some people think it's never too late to buy their way into heaven. I've seen many people, as they approach their life expectancy, become both religious and charitable with their money, almost like an atonement.

Is wrong, the song was extremely criticized when it came because it is a critique about rich and powerful people (of any age) putting themselves in paradise because, religion, historically (Christianity for us in the west) has given them the opportunity to do so, not only because it was created to serve them, but because they control it and dictate what it is, to the point that in the past the Catholic Church sold, literally, your access to heaven, which inspired the topic of this song. The meaning of the song is, "if you have the money or the power, you are entitled to heaven, no matter what kind of person you are" and that, oh boy, made some rich conservative people angry.

Lithlad, u and Nancy are basically saying the same thing. I don't think Nancy said LZ advocated for anyone buying their way into heaven. I grew up in the time and never remember any outpouring of anything about the song one way or another other than kids dug the hell outta it. It was just effing cool and we really didn't understand what all the lyrics meant. It was just kinda mystical and open to a lot of interpretation. Robert Plant himself has made many tongue in cheek comments about his lyrics in Stairway basically saying it was over the top pretentiousness and that he could never write a song like that now. Either way, it is a classic that I love. Love ur reactions lady, do a reaction to LZ KASHMIR from their Celebration Day performance. The original drummer's son joins the 3 surviving members on stage. Yeah they are old coots but dlv an epic performance. This live show of their one time reunion on stage drew more ticket requests than any show in history. Chk it out. Its effn awesome. Mark

The name. Jimmy Page (guitarist) had formed the band and they still needed a name. Keith Moon, drummer for The Who, had said the new band would go down like a lead balloon. Zeppelin was the name given to the very large blimps used by the Germans during WWII. The Hindenburg was a Zeppelin. Based on Moon's quote Page came up with the name Led Zeppelin and the rest is Rock history. This is a band who's catalog is well worth your diving into. I suggest you get the Led out now that your journey has begun and hear what all they have to offer!

Howdy! Joel in tucson here. I've stated in one other post tonight that I'm a hard rocker BOOMER / M-68. This means that I was in high school in Arizona from 1969-1973. Believe me......THIS TUNE was one of THE PRIME ROCK ANTHEMS of my school years. I saw 'em live in a big arena show in '72. I think you'd appreciate this song much much more if you had the non-live main album recording of it. This version sounds tinny.....and it won't translate the power and the badass hard-driving instrumentation like the main version that we all listened to back in the day. This tune STILL holds up big time. ALLRIGHT: as per your request....here's how their band's name came about. The main players in this band (they're all British) were sitting around one afternooon in a pub in the UK and were trying to come up with names for their new band. One guy suggested something, they weren't impressed and one of 'em said...."Yeah.....that name'll go over like a "lead balloon"....in otherwords....it'll fail bigtime. They all laughed at this and soon they spelled their new name as LED Zeppelin. Hokey-dokey? True story. Seriously.....this version is far too tinny sounding, Britt. Get the better cut and you might just dig it like we all did so long ago.....all the way thru today. God Bless joel in tucson

Honestly the recorded studio album version is way better for a "1st time hearing" in my humble opinion. There are so many beautiful details in the music which aren´t there in the life performance. That doesn´t mean that life performance was bad, not at all ..just to be clear.. BUT..However.. my point is ...it is the 70ties and the life sound quality based on 70ties sound technology wasn´t the best and in combination with 70ties video recording technology the sound becomes even worse and is therefore "a bit rough to listen" to say it politely (meaning the live audience there experienced a better sound than the video watcher do) while the studio recording sound is crystal clear and totally balanced at its finest.

@@brittreacts However when you listen to "Pink Floyd-Comfortably Numb-PULSE".....it MUST be at that spectacular PULSE Concert in London and it is NOT copyrighted so we can ALL see the video as the combination of Music and Lights is one of the greatest ever though if you are going to fade it then best NOT yo show it, as missing out on the kaleidoscope of colours for your ever-growing audience will be too frustrating:)

Jimmy page the guitar player was the first he had Gibson guitar's to build that double neck guitar just for this concert and this song. Britt people has been trying to figure out the meaning of this song for over 50 years. Im going to tick off some people I am a zeppelin expert my band covered the whole catalog at one point. This is nowhere close to the best song. Every song they did was a masterpiece.thats why they sold 400 + million albums not records but albums.but you have "whole lotta love" "dazed and confused " "when the levee breaks" "trampled under foot" just to name a few of there vast catalog these are more blues rock that show there true talents. 🤘☮

Jimmy Page (guitar) started this band by recruiting all the members after the Yardbirds group fell apart. He tried getting some other famous people beforehand, trying to steal them from other groups. It is said that either Keith Moon (drummer from the WHO) or manager Peter Green came up with the line, "Yeah, that would go over about as well as a lead zeppelin. That is where The New Yardbirds changed their name to Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant (vocals) and John Bonham (drums) were from a band called Band of Joy, and John paul Jones (keyboards, synthesizers, mandolin, and bass) was a studio musician and composer like Jimmy in the early to mid 60s. Led Zeppelin is in the top 5 most successful groups ever along with the Beatles, Queen, and Pink Floyd.

Name came from The Who's Keith Moon of when he heard of the line-up said ''You'll go down like a Led Zeppelin''' They were originally 'The New Yardbirds' as the original Yardbirds had disbanded leaving Jimmy without a band but contractual gigs to fulfil, so assembled the New Yardbirds to honour the commitments. He already knew John Paul Jones through their session work (check out early kinks stuff and you'll hear Jimmy on guitar). He also did the haunting into to Joe Cockers 'With a little help from my g=friends' plus lots more.

The name of the band came from a comment that i believe pete townsend of the who made when asked how he thought the band would do he answered “ they will drop like a lead zeppelin “ , so they took it as their name…the Greatest Rock Band to EVER EXIST all modern rock songs contain some part of their music….ALL OF THEM

Led Zeppelin is probably one…if not the greatest rock band ever……Jimmy Paige founded the band in England in the late 1960s and was in the top 5 electric guitarists in rock history….Robert Plant was the lead singer….known for his unique voice and high pitch vocals and famous for his outfit and stage presence….not to mention his hair….John Bonham was their drummer…..one of the top three rocker drummers to have played….played to packed arenas and venues…..every album produced was a hit…..I attended their concert inTampa Florida in the early 70s….outdoor football arena…60,000 plus in attendance. Dominated the rock scene from 1969 to 1975. Among many classic songs they produced and sang….Stairway to Heaven was a classic….especially the guitar solo. Jimmy Pige and Robert Plant are still with us today. Hope this helps.

I remember vividly buying the first album because the cover was so cool and then placing it on the turntable. What I heard changed my life musically. It is still my favorite album ever and that was almost 60 years ago. I think is was 17 or 18 at the time.

As far as I know, the boss of their first label told them, if they start their tour in east Europe (think, Czech Republic), they will go down like a led (lead) zeppelin. But they made their way up to Olymp of Rock History!!!

Good reaction! The lyrics were added to the music for the most part. As others have said it was kinda vague on purpose. It can mean whatever you want it to mean. It can be spiritual. It could be about a woman who does to much of a certain drug and thinks of the high as heaven ( if the stores are all closed, with a word she can get what she came for, there's still time to change the road your on). Part of their mystic .
