We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek! Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Thanks for reacting to one of my favorite singers. Sohyang is called the Korean Mariah Carey. However, since she doesn't whistle, to me she's more like the Korean Whitney Houston with her belting power. She suffered from several severe health issues, incl. cancer. As a devout Christian, her faith helped her through tough times. For Sohyang music is not about chasing the money. In an interview she said: “One thing I realized from the experience was that I didn’t want to compromise my religious faith to chase fame or reputation, which are highly valued in the entertainment industry. I just hope my music can comfort people and mend their wounded hearts, and that’s what Jesus wants for me to do as well.” Check out her covers of "Arirang Alone" (a traditional Korean song), "Everyone" (there's a version with English subs on another video platform) and "I have nothing". And lastly she is in a class by herself, She has been singing for over 20 years a and has toured to over 60 countries singing at churches at at special charitable events. You can also find a lot of amazing singers from other east asian countries or through Asia here on youtube, esp China with such a huge population and so many different ethnicities that give cultural differences to their singing. If only you know where and how to find these people. And for China, their singers don't seem to bother with expanding into other countries even though vocally they have what it takes, because their huge population is enough to earn a good living out of it.
