The whole band is Armenian. This performance was very special to them since it was the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and the band especially the lead singer has been fighting most his life for the government to recognize the tragedy that occurred back 100 years ago.

Serj is a classically trained opera singer, so he uses those techniques, which makes it very unique for a metal band

The word that Daron says at 5:52 is Շուրջպար (pronounced Shurjpar). It's an Armenian "round dance".

Yes, I hear you there, as a westerner who was fascinated by eastern music at a young age...It just has so much that is different. I don't really know how to describe it, but Serj's voice has this sense of tradition like Britt mentioned, almost like an Islamic call to prayer...and their lyrics are unfailingly both spiritual and political...I have just loved their music so much since I discovered them back in the early 00's...and that's not even to get into the "War on Terror" that they were also reacting against...

They use a scale the we call Phrygian Dominant, which is different notes than what we typically use in western music (we typically use the Major scale, or Minor scale). Phrygian Dominant is traditional in middle eastern music, and sounds very exotic to us. But Phrygian Dominant isn't unheard of in western music. Sam Smith's song "Unholy" is a huge pop hit right now, and it's in Phrygian Dominant. But that's the exotic sound your ears are clinging to. I believe all of System of a Down are American born and raised, but are first generation Americans, meaning their parents are Armenian immigrants.

The band has always supported the acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide that is still denied by most governments because of the pressure from Islamic countries like Turkey and Pakistan because they are the regions of the Ottoman Empire that carried out the genocide which actually gave inspiration to Hitler and the Nazis for the genocides during WW2

Hey. Thank you for your amazing reaction. All SOAD members from Armenia and that particular concert was in main square of Yerevan city and it dedicated to 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide. The part where Daron sang in armenian was right spotted) Hope i helped you)

Shoorch Bar basically translates to Circle Dance. They are performing in the center of Yerevan which is the capital city of Armenia.

Awesome reaction to an incredible band! All the members of SOAD are Armenian. There’s an area of L.A. that’s referred to as “Little Armenia”. It encompasses parts of Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, East Hollywood and Montebello. The band member’s paths all crossed in Glendale. It’s referred to as “Little Armenia” because that’s where the lion’s share of Armenian immigrants ended up when they fled from the Armenian genocide being perpetrated by the Turkish Government. We don’t have exact statistics but roughly 1.5 MILLION Armenians were killed because of thinly veiled religious bigotry. This show is the 100th anniversary of that tragedy. 3 of the 4 members immigrated from Armenia/Lebanon, with Daron (guitars/backup vox) being the only member born stateside but still of Armenian descent. SOAD have always been STRONGLY anti-imperialist and very active with raising aid and awareness for victims of sociopolitical conflicts. Found your channel via your Bo Burnham reactions and I’m loving the reactions! Cheers

They are all Armenian and this was a concert on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. It was also the first and only time they ever played in Armenia.

Soad are armenian expats living in California since their youth... I think the sheer toxicity and craziness of California made these pure people with pure unspoiled Armenian background produce this kickass music they do... in their music they observe a lot of filth and moral degeneracy around them... I respect thy are very anti-war through their whole career... although in Armenia its a sadder story... Serj Tankian strongly supported armenian prime minister Pashinian, who he saw as a good anti-corruption change i guess... but then Pashinian started a war...

They're all Armenian and System of a Down is by far my most favorite band. Great choice! There's a lot of symbolism and metaphors in their lyrics usually criticizing and commenting on war, genocide, media, politics, addiction, life and death. This band really helped me true and it's awesome to see that other and younger people are discovering this band. Serj is a classical trained singer who has a wide reach, the drummer is top notch, a fantastic bassist and the terrific guitar player is also a songwriter. I could you give a suggestion what to listen next, but any random song from any random album is unique and awesome. (Spiders, Science, War, ADD, BYOB, Tentative, Metro, etc.)
