They were the biggest band in the world about this time. Was lucky enough to see them on this tour in '84. Sting decided to pull the plug and go solo the next year. They had the reggae vibe all they way through from their debut LP in '78. Check out 'Roxanne' from it, which was their break through single. Always a good reaction because of the lyrics lol🔥

Sting (lead singer, aka Gordon Sumner) was an English teacher before they hit it big, and that comes out in some of their songs. Some great Police songs - Don't Stand So Close to Me, Roxanne, Spirits in the Material World, Invisible Sun, Driven to Tears, Canary in a Coalmine, Synchronicity II, King of Pain (one of my faves), Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, Wrapped around your Finger. Then Sting's solo projects - Fortress Around Your Heart, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, Russians, If you Love Somebody Set them Free, Be Still my Beating Heart, fields of Gold, Englishman in New York, Seven Days, Shape of my Heart, Love is the Seventh Wave, so many to choose from.

Interesting story related to the band's name (as told by Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones): The Stones were touring somewhere in Europe I think, and they were partying in Keith Richards' hotel suite after one of the shows. This being the late 70s/early 80s, there were illicit chemical substances floating around. All of a sudden, there's a loud knock at the door, followed by a voice bellowing "Open up! It's the police!" So everyone starts frantically trying to hide their stuff, while the police keep knocking at the door. When they finally do open the door, in walk Sting, Stewart, & Andy.

Britt! Thanks for a Police song reaction. Loved them in the 70 and 80's. These 3 dudes were superlative. So many great songs to consider. Beyond all the obvious recommendations, Britt you would dig one in particular. Off their '78 Outlandos d'amour album there is a track named Born In The 50's. I think You would dive into the beat, tone and strength of it! Love to You, Your Family and All Your Followers on board! Great Labor Day weekend to each!

Sting used to be a school teacher. I'd heard, or read, that their classic hit song "Don't Stand So Close To Me" was inspired by a particular female student that Sting had.

As a young band in London The Police shared rehearsal space with Reggae bands & the cross pollination shines through in a lot of their tracks. Believe it or not you can hear it in a lot of The Clash songs too - they shared rehearsal rooms & even PA systems with Reggae bands. Everything is made up of bits of everything else & nothing more so than Music.

The leading “De” is much more apparent on the studio track. The live version has much more prominent instrumentals and maybe Sting didn’t have the mic to his mouth yet for the first syllable, but it’s definitely there. The Police (as a band) and Sting (as a solo artist) incorporates a lot of reggae (“islands”) music in their songs. “Englishman in New York” is a fun example of that.

I feel like the Police are tragically underrated. Real masters of creating catchy hooks. All 3 performers are strong, and they generally have a fun, upbeat, prot-reggae style. How many lead singers play bass guitar? I think there's more lead singers on piano. They've got some socially conscious songs, but they still manage to make them fun. And they have a "love" song that's really a stalker song. And the lyrics to THIS song are a bit more disturbing than the music would have you believe. Stewart Copeland is the drummer - his dad was in the CIA.

This is an improvised live version of this song. The E-yo audience participation was something he always threw into concerts and not really part of this song. (YES, take credit for the remix!) By this point they could do anything to it - we all knew this song and loved them. This "river-rafty" is a fun way to put it! Love your reactions Britt! Next Police song can be Roxanne, or Canary in a Coalmine, or Message in a Bottle, Don't Stand So Close to Me - Love the Police!

Now for some real fun, check out Prince's "La La La, He He He." I grew up during the height of The Police, but it took me over a decade removed before I figured out they did mostly British Reggae. Hard to beat Sting's voice, too. Thanks for the reaction!

The deal behind the name is a nod to Stewart Copeland’s father who was an “ambassador” secretly working for the CIA in Lebanon in the sixties and seventies where he grew up oh and before his dad worked for the government he was a successful jazz trumpet player in the 50’s His two brothers Miles and Ian founded IRS records and he founded the band with Andy Summers who had just left the faces the year before Sting was found in a London bar playing bass for a jazz band by Andy the Stewart They all wrote and composed songs for every album but sting’s songs garnered their most success and after a few films he starred in it all went to his head and the band fell apart with constant fighting between Sting and Copeland Sting one day showed up to the studio and announced he was going to take a break from the band and left Andy and Copeland out to dry They temporarily got back together for a reunion tour and almost made a new album but sting walked out again

@BrittReacts This is The Police. The bass guitarist, lead vocalist is Sting, who went on to have a solo career. Sting/The Police and the types of Caribbean/quasi-reggae style sounds this band implemented, are a huge influence on Ren Gill's music, who often employs similar styles in his production. The studio version definitely has the "de" at the start of the line... but in a live performance sometimes the mic doesnt pic up some short sounds or sometimes the singer is adlibbing and just doesnt say certain lyrics as written. And you're absolutely right Britt, that would have been a good vocal stacking (the "yo"s and the chorus line over it). The intent of this song can be summed up in: "i feel like 8 words of gibberish spoken from my heart has more depth and meaning than 1000 rehearsed words"

The studio version of this song has a slower tempo. This seems rushed since I know the other version. The police had quite a few songs that had that Caribbean-Bob Marley feel married to English Rock.

Britt, the "tempo" change you referred to isn't actually a change in tempo, because if you were to move any part of your body to the beat of the music, the rate at which you would do it would never change at any point in the song. The part you were referring to is actually called "half time". That's when a drummer goes from playing the snare drum on counts 2 & 4 to playing it on count 3. In this case, he's playing it on the rim of the snare drum. Half time is an effective way to change the feel of a section of a song, and is a very common thing to do. Great reaction, btw!

Yes, The Police were former police officers. SWAT qualified, all snipers. Britt was unable to hear the “d-“ enunciation. That’s why I dislike reactors playing live music. Unless it is a MTV Unplugged performance, stop reacting to live performances. The sound quality is never, ever as good as the studio version. Plus, these artists, like to go off-script when performing live and add extra things here and there, which throws every thing out of kilter. The only exception is Megadeth’s SYMPHONY OF DESTRUCTION HD (that one night live in Buenos Aires) (2005).
