Dimash is always breaking the rules. He’s supposed to close his mouth on the end of the note. The vocal teachers say teaching vocal lessons in the era of Dimash. Dimash uses vibrato however he pleases. He does everything first and the vocal coaches line up to tell you what he did then they send their students to Dimash to learn. And then the students call him “Maestro Vocalist” which of course he is. I’ve heard in the past classical singers complain about breathy singers, but you see how he started the song with so little breath the mic was the only thing bringing the sound to our ears. And it’s always new. It’s brand new. He surprises every singe time. The song he sings the most is “sos” and it’s never the same. I think the song means so much to him. The song is about Yoshiko Yamaguchi, a Chinese-born Japanese actress during World War II. She hid her Japanese heritage under the name Li XIanglan. She became famous in China. However, once the war was over and she revealed her identity, she was accused of being a spy and she was deported back to Japan and didn't go back to China for many years, as it was forbidden at that time. Ms Yamaguchi did return to China in her later years as the Japanese Parliamentary Vice Minister of Environment. This song is saying goodbye to her Chinese name Li Xianglan. The song is a metaphor, as lyrics speak of how a person has to hide what feels inside.

Dimash sang “Ikanaide” for the Tokyo Jazz Festival in January of 2021 from what looks like his studio at home. According to several native Japanese speakers, Dimash’s pronunciation of the lyrics is nearly flawless. One native speaker, who gave a detailed analysis, stated that he is “expressing Japanese more (better) than Japanese”. Goro Matsui who wrote the lyrics to “Ikanaide” posted on his Twitter account that he has never heard a foreigner sing in Japanese in such a beautiful way. Tamaki Kōji composed the music and performed the song in 1989. "Ikanaide" became the title song for the Chinese-Japanese TV series “Farewell, Li Xianglan'', filmed that year. It is the story of Yoshiko Yamaguchi, a beloved Chinese-born Japanese actress, and singer during World War II, who hid her Japanese heritage under the name Li XIanglan.
